GENERAL LAYOUT OF HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
➢Oil storage tank or oil reservoir.
➢Oil conditioning elements such as filters, heat
exchangers, heater and strainer.
➢Pump to pressurize oil.
➢Fluid controlling elements such as direction control
valves, flow control valves, pressure relief valve,
check valves etc.
➢Actuators- reciprocating, rotary
➢Fluid or oil conducting elements such as pipelines,
connectors, hoses etc.
➢Medium i.e. Hydraulic oil.
FUNCTIONS OF ELEMENTS OF HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
➢Oil tank or Reservoir: this is oil storage tank in which hydraulic oil is stored. The oil
passes through various pipelines and after doing useful work in actuator, the oil returns
back to oil tank
➢Filter: this element filters the oil before going to next element i.e. Pump
➢Pump: it is the heart of hydraulic system. Its main function is to create the flow of oil
under pressure through entire hydraulic system and hence to assist transfer of power and
motion (i.e. Useful work)
➢Fluid controlling elements: these valves are fitted in hydraulic system at a particular
locations. These valves control the flow of oil in the system. They also direct the flow of
oil in system as also they control the speed of actuator.
➢Actuators: the pressurized oil acts on actuator. The oil gives or transfer its power to
actuator to create useful work
➢Pipelines: It is the functional connection for oil flow in the hydraulic system. Pressure line
and Return line
ACTUAL HYDRAULIC SYSTEM STRUCTURE
➢Oil reservoir stores oil
➢Pump sucks oil from tank and pressurizes it
➢The oil is directed to port A or B of actuator by direction control valve.
➢ When oil enters through port A piston moves from left to right. The oil from other side of
piston will return through port B via direction control valve.
➢When oil enters through port B piston will move from right to left and oil from other side
of piston will return through port A.
➢Flow control valve will control the flow of oil to control the speed of piston.
➢Pressure relief valve acts as a safety valve. This valve will not allow the system pressure
to increase beyond set value.
➢Filter will arrest foreign particles from oil and will keep the oil clean.
ADVANTAGES OF HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
➢Very high pressure can be generate. About 700 bar
➢Hydraulic actuators can achieve highly accurate and precise motions, so CNC/VMC
machines use hydraulic control for tool movements.
➢Hydraulic motors can be reversed easily. Due to this hydraulic motors are useful in
machine tools.
➢Speed control of actuators can be achieved easily.
➢System uses oil, hence it is self lubricating system.
➢Use of flexible connectors permits compound motion generation without gears and
complicated mechanical drives.
➢Frictional resistance is very less.
➢Noise and vibration produced by hydraulic pump is very low.
DIS ADVANTAGES OF HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
➢Increased manufacturing cost.
➢Leakage of hydraulic oil during its flow in system causes heavy pressure drop.
➢Due to oil leakage system becomes dirty.
➢Petroleum based hydraulic oil can create fire hazards.
➢In cold climate hydraulic oil freezes.
➢The maintenance cost of hydraulic system is high.
