1. Who is Elizabeth?

Elizabeth is a sweet and cheerful woman who also seem to have some trouble standing up for
herself. She can come off a little bit of a pushover. She is George’s previous wife and is mother
to Mark.
2. Do Mark and his parents live in a house or a flat?
I would assume they live in a house, after George said, “The house is in my name”. Later in
the story George also said that he was going to move in with Julia in her old flat, and
Elizabeth sounded shocked.
3. According to the boy’s dad, who owns the house?
George technically owns the house, since the house is under his name.
4. Who is Julia?
Julia is the woman George is leaving his family for. A woman he adores. Mark’s dad forced
Elizabeth and Mark to move out so he could move in with Julia. After awhile they decided to
move out anyways because of the smell.
5. What is Elizabeth’s first reaction when her husband tells her he hates both her and Mark?
To protect Mark and say that it’s not his fault. Protect him and say that he needs both his
parents. She also started crying but didn’t say anything.
6. How many brothers and sisters does Mark have?
He doesn’t have any siblings.
7. Who is George?
George is Elizabeth’s previous husband and therefore also Mark’s father. He is unfaithful to
his wife because he keeps having girls on the side of his marriage. He also seems like a person
with a lot of wrath and anger. He seems to be giving Elizabeth and Marks bruises, when
Elizabeth stood up and protected Mark when George held his hand up and said, “not this
time”. So, I would guess it had happened before. Mark also said that he stayed home from
school till the bruises went away.
He also never gave Mark or Elizabeth’s any birthday cards or presents, no holidays either.
Elizabeth had to even go to the hospital twice because the treatment form her husband was
so bad. Elizabeth’s parents said that they never like him, the dad said that he was a bully and
a nasty piece of work. He seems like a rude person.
8. Where do Elizabeth and Mark have to go?
They went to Elizabeth’s mom who lived a couple streets away.
9. Had George’s father-in-law liked George?
He thought that he was a bully and a nasty piece of work. But they never said anything since
they didn’t want to interfere.
10. How much of what they own does Elizabeth say she wants?
Her mother said that Elizabeth should fight back and said that she shouldn’t just let someone
take half her life like that. Her belongings and everything belong to her, and that she is
entitled to half. So, Elizabeth agreed on that and demanded half of everything and that she
wanted a divorce and wrote it down on a note and left it somewhere she knew he would see
it.
11. Where does Mark put the thawed prawns?
In the curtain rail. They were supposed to be George’s dinner, and the curtain rail Elizabeth
hadn’t had time to replace yet. So Mark poured the prawns down the rail, and Elizabeth also
helped after she saw. That is the reason George and Julia moved out, because of the stench,
but they took the curtain rail with them, because they didn’t know where the smell was
coming from.
12. Where are George and Julia going to move?
To Julias old flat.
13. In the end, what effect does the divorce have on Elizabeth?
I think it had a positive effect on her in a way. Of course, she must be heartbroken, but she is
so much stronger. She can stand up for herself now and is less afraid. Probably from after
having do demand and try to get some of her things back, that she is entitled too, but also
the whole thing in general.
