Objective:

1. Familiarity with power plants in the Philippines.

2. Present data effectively to communicate ideas with other people.
3. Use Excel in data analysis.
Steps:
1. Download the list of power plants in the Philippines. Link -
https://www.doe.gov.ph/list-existing-power-plants
2. Choose only one of the three grids that you want to study (Luzon, Visayas or
Mindanao grid).
3. Analyze the data and find the combined capacity of all plant groups in terms
of MW capacity. Use the grouping according to DOE and present the data in a
bar graph or a graph type of your choice. Include only in your report Grid-
Connected power plants. Do not include Embedded power plants.
4. Analyze the data and find the combined capacity of all plant groups in terms
of MW capacity. Use the grouping according to DOE and present the data in a
bar graph or a graph type of your choice. Include only in your report Grid-
Connected power plants. Do not include Embedded power plants.

MINDANAO GRID (GRID-CONNECTED)

Total Capacity of Coal Power Plant:

 Dependable – 1,766 MW
 Installed – 1,955.5 MW
Total Capacity of Oil-Based Power Plant:
 Dependable – 493.5 MW
 Installed – 531.7 MW

Total Capacity of Geothermal Power Plant:

 Dependable – 493.5 MW
 Installed – 531.7 MW
Total Capacity of Large Hydroelectric Power Plant:
 Dependable – 917.3 MW
 Installed – 1,074.4 MW
Total Capacity of Small Hydroelectric Power Plant:
 Dependable – 8 MW
 Installed – 8.1 MW

Total Capacity of Hydroelectric Power Plant:

 Dependable – 925.4 MW
 Installed – 1,082.6 MW
Total Capacity of Solar Power Plant:
 Dependable – 31.3 MW
 Installed – 39.1 MW

Total Capacity of Biomass Power Plant:

 Dependable – 13.5 MW
 Installed – 15 MW

5. Identify all coal-fired power plants in your selected grid that is Grid-
Connected. Classify them according to their type (i.e. subcritical, fluidized
bed, etc) and find the combined capacity for each type. Present the data in a
bar graph or a graph type of your choice.
Total Capacity of Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) Coal:
 Dependable – 1556 MW
 Installed – 1723.5 MW

Total Capacity of Pulvurized Sub Critical Coal:

 Dependable – 210 MW
 Installed – 232 MW
6. What is the biggest plant in your chosen grid? What can the grid operator do if
this plant goes offline suddenly? Explain.
In terms of capacity, the largest plant on the Mindanao grid is the coal power
plant, which has an installed capacity of 1995.5 MW and a dependable capacity of
1766 MW. If the plant goes offline unexpectedly, the grid operator can notify the
National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) and inform them that one of the
plants in our grid is no longer operational, as well as suggest that they increase the
power produced by other baseload power plants in your grid. If the NGCP does not
agree with the first suggestion, I recommend that the grid operator run all
intermediate power plants on his/her grid to compensate for power losses caused by
an offline baseload power plant.
