KENT I have always thought that the King prefers the Duke of Albany to the Duke of Cornwall,

Gloucester It always seemed so to us, but now, in dividing up his kingdom, it’s not clear which
of the dukes he values more. Since their halves of the kingdom are equally split, neither can be
claimed to be preferred.

Gloucester (Then he looked round) because the room had become silent. ‘The King is coming,’

The King arrived followed by his daughters, Goneril, with her husband, the Duke of Albany:
Regan, and her husband, the Duke of Cornwall: and the youngest, Cordelia.

Lear nodded at Gloucester.

Lear Fetch the Lords of France and Burgundy, Gloucester, ‘Meanwhile, we’ll explain our
deeper purpose. ‘Give me that map there.’

Gloucester went and called them (France and Burgundy came on stage)

Servants lifted the table and brought it closer to him.

Lear, you should know that we have divided our kingdom into three, 'And it is our express goal
to get away from all cares and duties from our old age and give them to younger strengths.

Lear (He turned his head to where his daughters sat). Express how much you love me, and as
much as I appreciate your love and loyalty, I will give one of you the throne of the kingdom.
Goneril, our eldest child, speak first.’
Goneril (stood up). ‘Sir, I love you more than words can express. Dearer than eye-sight, space,
and freedom. A love that takes the breath away beyond everything, I love you.’
Lear (raised his hand and held it above the map). All of these lands, all the way from this line to
that with its forests, fields, and its rivers I make you lady of.
Lear What does our second daughter, our dearest Regan, wife of Cornwall, say? Speak.’
Regan ‘I am made of the same metal as my sister and value myself at her worth. My love
comes from the depths of my own heart. I am unable to take any pleasure without you. I get
pleasure only from the enjoyment of your dear Highness’ love.’
Lear (raised his hand and held it above the map). All of these lands. I make you lady of.
Lear ‘Now, our joy and our last born. What can you say to attract a third more valuable than
your sisters? Speak.
Cordelia Nothing, my lord,
Lear Nothing you said nothing. Nothing will come of nothing. Speak again.
Cordelia I can’t express in words the things that are in my heart. I love your Majesty according
to my duty as a daughter. No more, no less.’
Goneril Mend your speech a little.
Regan or it might spoil your fortunes!
Cordelia (Looked at her father) My dear lord, ‘You have brought me up and loved me. I return
those duties accordingly – obey you, love you, and honor you Why do my sisters have husbands
if they say they love you exclusively? If it happens that I should marry, that man who has my
hand in marriage will have half my love, half my care, and duty.
Lear ‘Is this from your heart?’

Cordelia Yes, my dear lord.’ ‘So young, my lord, and honest.’

Lear ‘Let your honesty be your dowry.

Kent (went forward). ‘My Lord,"

Lear (He is very nervous) Don’t come between me and her! I loved her the most and planned to
spend my retirement in her loving care. Get out of my sight! So, my grave will be my only
peace. Call the king of France, Burgundy, Cornwall, and Albany

Kent (tried again to relieve Lear) Royal Lear, whom I’ve always honored as my king, loved as my
father followed as my master

Lear (gets out his sword) Get out of the way of the arrow. Get out of my sight!

Kent (got mad) What happened is wrong. Keep hold of your kingdom and don’t divide it. Put a
stop to this recklessness. Your youngest daughter doesn’t love you the least, and those who
expressed their love are empty-hearted.

Lear Kent on your life no more. (holding the sword)

Kent ‘I’ve never thought of my life. I am a poor man to be used against your enemy. I don’t
fear losing my life in the interest of your safety.

Lear out of my sight!

Kent see better Lear! You will lose everything!

Lear (going to explode) Oh! you slave criminal!(his hand went on kent with his sword)

Duke of Cornwall (expression of concern) No no leave him.

Duke of Albany (expression of concern) He will die.

Kent Oh, You want to kill me. to my last breath, I’ll insist that you’re doing the wrong thing.’

Kent (bowed to Cordelia) May the gods shelter you, young woman. Your thinking is right and
you’ve spoken the truth.’

(He turned and looked at Goneril and Regan.) ‘May your actions be like your sweet words about
love.

Kent (bowed to Lear) I will live the court and palace as you want.

Lear (Turned to Duke of Burgund )

Lear Duke of Burgundy you offer to marry Cordelia still you want her.

Duke of Burgundy ‘I’m sorry. ‘As you’ve lost your father’s kingdom in this way, you must also
lose a husband.’ she’s there, and she is yours.’

Cordelia Don’t worry about it, Burgundy, ‘Since you’re in love with wealth, I won’t be your
wife.’

Lear (turned to king of France) Still you want to marry my daughter.

King of France Yes if she accepts She will be my queen and all I have is for her.

Cordelia with pleasure I will marry you.

King of France Bid them farewell, Cordelia, cruel as they are. You lose here, to find better
elsewhere.’

Lear She is yours now king of France because we have no such daughter, nor shall we ever
see that face of hers again: so be gone, without our goodwill, our friendship, or our blessing.

King of France Says goodbye to your sisters and your father dear.

Cordelia (looked at Lear) leaves you in tears, my father. I love you father the truth will be
revealed soon.

Cordelia (looked at her sisters) Take care of my father, be next to him.

Regan Don’t tell us what our duty is,’ said Regan.

Goneril You concentrate on pleasing your husband, who has taken you in as a beggar ‘You have
been disobedient and fully deserve what’s happened to you.’
