5 Useful expressions

Read these sentences from the tapescript and use the context to explain what the expressions in bold
mean. Are any expressions formal, informal or emphatic?

In 1905 British builder William Willett developed a similar idea independently of Hudson.
He lobbied the British Parliament year after year to no avail until his death in 1915. The
issue was revisited time and again throughout the world, but it wasn’t officially put into
practise nationwide until the early 20th century in Germany. The Germans, in the throes
of World War one, were looking for ways to conserve energy.

There are also apparent health and safety issues that come into play. The shift to and from
daylight saving time has been linked to an increased risk in heart attacks and automobile
fatalities.

There’s no shortage of opinion when it comes to daylight saving time and whether the
world will agree on how to manage our clocks is yet to be seen.

Activate this vocabulary - tell your partner about:

• Something you have done many times to no avail

• An issue that is raised in your country time and again, perhaps because there is no shortage of
opinion on the subject
• A country in the world that is currently in the throes of a war or other crisis
• Some issues that come into play when you are planning a night out with friends
• A future development in your life that is yet to be seen

Speak in full sentences using the expressions.

6 Write

Make a list of reasons why daylight saving time should be introduced or continued in your area and
reasons why it should be discontinued or not introduced in your area.

Then choose one point of view and write a blogpost explaining your ideas. Use vocabulary and
expressions from the lesson.
