EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A vehicle breakdown is a mechanical or electrical failure of a motor vehicle in which the

underlying issue either prevents the functioning of the vehicle or greatly limits the operation
of the vehicle, making it exceedingly challenging, practically impossible, or otherwise
dangerous to drive. There are several reasons why vehicles break down. Depending on how
serious the damage is, the car could need to be towed to a mechanic's shop or it might be fixed
on the spot by roadside help or a mobile technician. With other issues, the vehicle may appear
to function normally for a while under the driver's control, but eventually needs to be repaired.
Many vehicle owners who experience personal economic difficulties or have a busy schedule
may keep delaying getting necessary maintenance or repairs made to their cars for a longer
period of time than is necessary, which increases their risk of a breakdown, causes the car to
sustain more damage, or puts them in more danger.

Thus, in New Product Development (NPD) report, we came out with a solution to this problem
which is by developing blueprint by using mobile application. The product is considered as
new product that are improvise to the old system. Anyone with a vehicle breakdown will use
this smartphone application as a platform. With the help of the app's user, the apps can diagnose
vehicle problems and determine whether the user can handle the necessary repairs themselves
or a mechanic is required. By using the apps, it will lead to more simple and efficient methods,
saving more time and money.

Anyone who, for the most part, does not even know how to fix their car when it breaks down
is our marketing target. We want these targets to believe that the new system is simpler than
the old one. By suggesting and creating the product, we seek to make things simpler and prevent
panic when people experience vehicle problems. This technology blueprint report is a plan or
set of proposals that shows how our new product is expected to accomplish. It is a detailed road
map for converting ideas and vision into real, functioning, profitable and viable product.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Study

As it turns out, there are more people than cars in Malaysia at present, with the number of
vehicles deemed active at present standing at around 23 million units instead of the 33.3 million
vehicles quoted last week in a report. In the report, it was indicated that the number of vehicles
in Malaysia had reached the latter figure, effectively overtaking the population of the country,
which stands at 32.6 million. (Anthony Lim, 2022). This is because, the government's
introduction of the automotive sales and services tax exemption in June 2020 as part of the
National Economic Recovery Plan (Penjana) stimulus package.( Dawn Chan, 2022)

Due to the high demand of vehicle, the high potential of having a car break down is also high.
Any hardworking person can agree that having their car break down is one of life's most
annoying incidents. It can significantly increase your monthly spending in addition to causing
mess with your daily activities and work commitments. Instead of visiting their neighbourhood
auto mechanic or pricey dealership, many conscientious car owners have chosen to engage with
professional mobile mechanics to do routine maintenance and repairs in order to avoid these
typical problems.

Direct mobile services have recently provided customers the choice to have experts visit them
at their location, saving them time, money, and hassle. A mobile auto repair technician is a
professional automotive technician that has received training and certification and has a track
record of providing comprehensive mechanical diagnostic, troubleshooting, and repair
services.

In this study, it will be focus on applying the new apps features that help them when car
breakdown. With the help of the app's user, the apps can diagnose vehicle problems and
determine whether the user can handle the necessary repairs themselves or a mechanic is
required. By using the apps, it will lead to more simple and efficient methods, saving more
time and money.

2
1.2 Problem Statement

A mobile mechanic is the same kind of service provider. These mobile auto mechanics often
have years of expertise and a wide range of training in general auto diagnosis, repair, and
troubleshooting. Numerous online-based mobile mechanic services have emerged in recent
years. The majority of them work with local towns, cities, or states as their subcontractors.
While this enables a business to expand rather quickly, it also introduces some less-than-
desirable technicians who have not had their backgrounds examined or demonstrated a history
of ethical business practises.

i. Limited Equipment
The limitation on access to some equipment, which is generally seen in a physical
mechanic shop, is by far the biggest drawback. Mobile mechanics will have trucks or
vans with a lot of specialized equipment, but they will not always have advanced
computer systems or a lift like a shop would. Additionally, if a mobile mechanic works
alone, there can be a limitation on some jobs that call for multiple technicians to finish.

ii. The Weather

The amount of work a mobile mechanic can complete is primarily influenced by the
weather. Any repair work that requires opening any of the cars' doors, windows, or
hatches which it constantly does will be difficult, impossible, or at the very least
dangerous for them to perform while it is pouring rain.

iii. Car New Features

The majority of automobiles produced in 1996 or later will be equipped with computers.
These chips work in conjunction with diagnostic systems to assist mechanics determine
what's wrong with the vehicle. It's probable that a mobile mechanic won't be adequately
prepared to handle a technical error at this type of vehicle.

3
1.3 Methodology

The methodology used is based on the objectives of our research about this application. It is in
order to analyse the problems and come out with useful solution and an improved version.
There are several methods of data collection that being to finish this New Project Development
(NPD). The methods that involve are:

i. Research
The first method in collecting data for the information needed is by using referring to
the articles about mechanic mobile applications, newspaper, website, journals and
lecture notes provided by our lecturer. Our team member is committed by giving fully
teamwork to find the information needed in order to improve the existing applications
by adding some cool features. After we have gone through some readings and research,
we came out with some conclusion and recommendation on the NPD.

ii. Survey or questionnaire

Several online surveys or questionnaire were conducted to identify the respondents
background and awareness about vehicles maintenance and servicing. We also
conducted this survey to analyse our respondent opinion about our improved version of
mobile applications and their interest. Google Form platform is use as part of our
questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed through the medium of social media
like WhatsApp, Instagram and Twitter. The respondents only need to tick “yes” or “no”
based on their understanding and experience about the mobile applications. Total of our
targeted respondents is 50 and the result that we get came from 51 respondents within
2 weeks duration. The data then is analyzed based on the percentage of every answer
to determine the solutions, disadvantages and advantages of this mobile application.

iii. Experience and observation

Lastly, the information gathered also came from experience and observation of our team
members towards targeted users (student, women and men who frequently use their
vehicles as main transportation). The experience is based on several of our team
members who had faced the unexpected car breakdown on the road, problems to change
their flat tyres and car or motorcycle ran out of fuels. These problems can cause danger
to the users as some of them did not know how to fix their own vehicles. Therefore, we

4
develop a new improved version of mobile applications that can solve every of these
problems. Moreover, within the 2 weeks of questionnaire survey were carried out we
also conduct an observation towards our surroundings. We can see lot of people went
to workshop to fix their motorcycles and vehicles after work or during weekend since
they are very busy during working hour. Other than that, a few people also had problems
to send their car for service because of limited hour. During traffic congestion also we
can see that few cars stopped by at the roadside because their car temperature becomes
high, flat tyre and accidents. They had to call their insurance agency for help but there
is no respond or delay. We managed to discuss the core of this problem and identify
some important elements such as the cause of this problem and its solution.

5
1.4 Limitation

This NPD projects has its own limitations due to several constraints such as limited time to do
observation and others. Applications or technology made is not 100% perfect. There are also
some shortcomings occur but we tried our best to overcome those issues. This incidence is
common, however in order to successfully accomplish our objective and vision, we must
address this constraint by narrowing its scope and finding alternate solutions.

We are conducting a survey and distributing the form using Google Form. The benefit of using
this approach of data gathering is that it saves time and money by just collecting the information
that is absolutely necessary for the project. But in this case, dishonesty may be a problem. The
answers that responders provide into the Google Form could occasionally not be completely
accurate. They may have done it out of an attempt to maintain their privacy or owing to the
social desirability bias.

Secondly, the respondent's emotional reactions or sentiments cannot be properly captured by

this type of data gathering. Body language and facial expressions are not visible to us. If we
perform this survey face-to-face, we can observe the respondent's body language and facial
expression, for instance, and respond right away to changes in the respondent's expression if
they don't completely comprehend the question. Therefore, the data might not be 100%
accurate.

Lastly, the survey was conducted on a limited scale with only 50 participants with limited time
for observation. The results reported may not be representative of the overall population due to
the tiny population. A bigger sample size would be needed for this. On the other hand, we
believe that some of the information needed to produce this product is still missing and needs
to be updated. Besides, lack of professional help also a factor for limitation. We believed that
developing an applications required experts help since it needs longer development process for
a better app.

6
1.5 Objectives

NPD was crucial for the company's development and sustainability, as we all understood.
People nowadays are rushing to develop new ideas and products that will make their lives
simpler. Every day, developments related to the advancement of the world were equated with
technology. Despite having several competitors that offered the same product but with different
characteristics, the goal was to remain in the market. The main objectives of this project are to
discuss and analyse the development of this mobile application. The development process of
our applications – Mechamotor apps is important to ensure the application can be benefited by
many parties.

The objectives of this report are:

i. To create a new technological product based on the issues occurs from an earlier case
study or mobile application that available in the market. Technology must be used to
develop a brand-new product that differs from others already on the market.
Additionally, it must satisfy client needs.
ii. To provide a solution based on the demand made by the customer or potential buyer.
The survey was made in order to identify the customer’s preference towards the new
MECHAMOTOR application (mechanics application for vehicles).
iii. To analyse the potential users and the target market of this new product.
iv. To identify issues occurs on the existing applications and improved it by adding new
technology features.

7
2.0 NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

New product development is defined as the process by which entrepreneur designs and create
new product/service that will be sold to customers. Customers reviews are necessary to on a
regular basis as it play important parts in new product development. When consumer
preferences change, a new product development is required. Other than that, any new
improvement or upgrades on existing product that would be satisfaction to the customers is
consider as new product development.

2.1 Definition

‘MECHAMOTOR’ is a mobile app that developed to assist and provide mechanic services for
car owner that will be improvised by the existing app. There are three basic types of mobile
apps by the technology used to code. Native apps are created for one specific platform or
operating system. Web apps are mobile friendly versions of websites that can be accessed using
a mobile browser on any mobile device or OS. Hybrid apps are combination of native and web
apps that are wrapped within a native app and can have their own icon or be downloaded
through an app store.

Native apps are built particularly for the operating system of a mobile device (OS). As a result,
it may have native android mobile app as well as native iOS app along with the other platforms
and devices. Since they are designed for a single platform, this app can be mix and match for
example, Android apps cannot be used on IOS phone.

Web apps function similarly to native apps but are accessed through your mobile device's web
browser. They aren't independent apps in the sense that you must download and install code
onto your device to use them. Hybrid applications are online apps that have the appearance and
feel of native apps. They may have a home screen app icon, a responsive design, quick
performance, and even the ability to run offline, but they are actually web applications
disguised as native apps.

‘MECHAMOTOR’ mobile app are the native apps since this type of app give speed, stability
and customization features that are deem crucial to one’s success.

8
2.2 Classification

In developing a new product, there are two classifications of new product developed. Fist is
completely new product which is a product that new to the world product and new to the firm
which is new product lines. Next is improvement on existing product. Addition to existing line
and improvement and revision to existing products can also be considered as new product.

‘MECHAMOTOR’ is an improvision and revision of existing mobile mechanic app that has
been launched before. The existing version of the mobile apps works the same as the GrabFood
or FoodPanda app but focusing on the mechanics. ‘MECHAMOTOR’ is improvised to have
an AI that can guide the users to identify the problems that occurring to their car first an action
to be taken whether they can repair it by themselves or proceed to book the mechanic or items
from the mechanic shop. This will help the users to cut cost instead of booking the mechanics
for the issues that can be resolved by themselves.

Direct mobile services have lately given clients the option of having specialists come to them,
saving them time, money, and bother. This apps will try to reach for mobile auto repair expert
that is a trained and certified automotive technician with a proven track record of offering
complete mechanical diagnostic, troubleshooting, and repair services to give the satisfaction
and trust to the users.

9
2.3 New Product Development Process
2.3.1 Research and Development

Research and development (R&D) are the process through which business acquire information
in order to produce new products or find innovative methods to enhance the current services
and products. For our product development, the idea of ‘MECHAMOTOR’ which is the mobile

other mobile devices. Furthermore, these days, a number of businesses offer a smartphone
application such as grocery delivery app, parking space app, shopping app, etc.

For this product development, the idea was created from the research study of smartphone
application that are currently being trendy or popular since it gives a better experience with
more features. Other than that, it is also offer users a way to connect, from anywhere and at
any time.

In addition, by utilising current technology, the automotive business has advanced

significantly. The combination of several technologies, including the internet, artificial
intelligence and cellular technology has allowed for this digitalization of the car industry. The
vehicle maintenance and repair application are one way these three features have combined to
transform the automotive sector.

10
ii. Idea screening

Idea screening is the process of assessing new product concepts at an early stage of
development to make sure they fulfil both customer and business objectives. For our product,
the process of idea screening is do the research study on the emergency vehicles repair and
maintenance smartphone application in Malaysia such as Serv, CarBengkel and Carpit:

Serv: Locals Arief Imran and Hazim Nordin established the

On-Demand Car Servicing on-demand car servicing platform Serv in 2016. It was
developed as a platform to help regular Malaysian
motorists in maintaining their vehicles and to assist
mechanics, especially freelance ones in finding
employment as Serv Partners.
CarBengkel: Established in 2015 by brothers Armin Baniaz Pahamin
Workshop Booking at and Amnan Bazil Pahamin. Based on the type of your
Your Fingertip vehicles and location, the CarBengkel app will find the

3.0 CONCLUSION

Ultimately, with the increasing number of cars on the road and the sophistication of vehicles,
the service or repair system must keep up with and advance with the vehicles. The traditional
system, in which people must visit the workshop during vehicle breakdown or maintenance, is
inconvenient and wastes a significant amount of time and money. This can be improved with
a service department application that is directly attached to a designed application system. This
application simplifies the resolution of vehicle-related issues for users. Vehicle owners will
receive guaranteed benefits, especially busy vehicle owners who are unfamiliar with vehicle
maintenance systems.

In addition to that, the level of safety of vehicle owners who have vehicle breakdowns on the
road can also be curbed by the speed of the mechanical party that comes to help. This will
undoubtedly benefit not only the user but also the workshop owner.
