Superhero Design Project

Ms. Rose’s Theatre Classes


TPOs, Essential Q’s &
TEKS
Three Part Objectives:

Students will create an original Superhero that can save the world from an issue of their
choice that we are facing today. They will research their superhero, create a monologue for their
original superhero; create a chest logo, costume sketch, and superhero mask; and complete the
elements of art reflection. All of these worksheets are included in this packet.

Essential Questions:

● What are some issues in society and what is needed to fix those issues?
● How do the elements of design play into superhero and comic strips?
● How can good design help address social issues?

TEKS:

● identify the safe use of the basic techniques of costume construction and make-up application;[C]
● connect theatre skills and experiences to higher education and careers; and[F]
● recognize the design and technical elements of theatre as an art form and evaluate self as a creative being;[C]
Why Superheros?
⬜ They get special powers. Who wouldn’t want to fly?!
⬜ Everyone looks up to them.
⬜ They always find their love interest.
⬜ Some of them have alter-egos and get to be whoever they
want.
⬜ They get a chance to escape and SAVE people.
⬜ They get to wear tights.
⬜ The cape. THE CAPE.

Because this is our COSTUME DESIGN UNIT….so


what is a costume designer in the theatre world?
WHAT ARE COSTUMES?

● They are clothes that actors wear in a play.

● They help portray the character.

● Help the audience understand the time and place of the


story.

● Differ from everyday clothes.


Who are Costume
Designers?
● Costume Designer—meets
with the director.
Researches the play, then
designs the costumes for
the entire play to fit the
period. Costumes with
compliment each other and
the scene design.

● Costume Crew—The
committee in charge of
costuming the show.
YOUR MISSION:
Create a Superhero to fight
one of the following issues!
Superhero to Fight
⬜ Bullying or Cyber Bullying
⬜ Social Media Effects on Teens
⬜ Insecurity and lack of confidence
⬜ Prejudices
⬜ Cures for diseases
⬜ Loneliness, Anxiety, or Depression
Project Timeline
Week One:
1. Look through the powerpoint and watch the video of Ms. Rose explaining this
project.
2. Select a social issue and answer the Superhero Character Analysis.
3. Write a Superhero Monologue

Week Two:
4. Choose one of the Superhero projects and complete for a grade:
a. Design and make a Superhero Chest Logo
b. Design and Costume Design Sketch
c. Design a Superhero Mask
5. Upload Your video to Flipgrid of you presenting your project.
a. Slate your first and last name, grade, and introduce your Superhero.
b. Tell us what social issue you wanted your superhero to fight against.
c. What was the most challenging part of this project.
d. Read your monologue. Upload the Monologue to Flipgrid.
e. Discuss the Elements of Art you used in your design. (line, shape, color,
pattern, texture, form, value)
Why Do a Character Analysis
Questionnaire?
● A character analysis is research that a
designer does for the character they
are designing. The more they know
about their character, the easier it
will be to design for that character in
mind!

● The answers to these questions will


help guide the writing of your
monologue.
Monologue
● A monologue is a long speech spoken by one person,
revealing personal thoughts and feelings. After you
have answered the questions on the Questionnaire, you
will write a monologue for your superhero/villain.
● The monologue should be at least 30 seconds in length.
That should be between 10-30 sentences. .
● This is an ORIGINAL monologue that should include
(but is not limited to):
○ their ability and/or how they got their power
○ their feelings about their role in society
○ their weakness or flaw
Chest Logo

● You will design a chest logo to give us a better


visualization of your character
● You may use construction paper other things from
home.
● You must design it on the template included in this
packet.
Costume Design Sketch

● A sketch of your
costume design
that includes your
logo.
● This must be fully
. colored.
Mask

● You will design a mask for your


superhero/villain. It can cover any part of
your face (top Half, side half, the whole face,
etc.)
● You may use construction paper (provided)
or something else from home if you would
like.
● It must be fully colored.
● You must design it on the template included
in this packet.
Creation Time
You will choose one of these
projects and make it three
dimensional. This will be a test
grade.
