Why pass on buying a Canon 514XL-S and Canon 312XL-S Super 8 Movie Cameras
I have opened up over 25 of these super 8's in the last year and if you have ever had one that
showed the red power light on when depressing the shutter and the camera hums or does
nothing, 90% of the time it is not repairable.
Here's why:
Canon used a very cheap plastic film motor release gear that over time disintegrates due to the
lubrication that was used. The gear becomes soft, especially if not used for years. When the motor
does engage it will tear the softened teeth off of the gear, jamming (hence the humming sound)
rendering the camera absolutely useless.
I know some of you may have working ones and that is great, seems to be those cameras that sit
for a very long time not getting use that the gear breaks down. The photos attached are two
cameras that I opened up today, just two of many. I stopped attempting repairs on these simply
because it's not worth someone paying me to look at it.

I had a 514XL-S shipped to me which arrived today.
It was running (took a while before it finally sped up again) so I locked the trigger
and put it on the table. After about 15 minutes it suddenly stopped and yup,
humming...

Only the 514XL-S and not the 514XL?
I thought they were the same camera and the XL-S had the sound part added to it.
