Types of Dementia
1. Alzheimer's disease

Memory loss and confusion are the main symptoms
Plaques and tangles are often found in the brains of people with Alzheimer's
2. Vascular dementia
Occurs after a stroke or a series of strokes
Changes in thinking skills sometimes occur suddenly following strokes
3. Lewy body dementia
Named for the abnormal protein clumps that are seen on autopsies of the brains of people
with Lewy body dementia
Symptoms include problems with attention and alertness
4. Frontotemporal dementia
Includes dementias such as behavioral variant FTD, primary progressive aphasia, Pick's
disease, and progressive supranuclear palsy
The personality, behavior, and language are profoundly affected

5. Mixed dementia
Diagnosis of more than one type of dementia in the same person
Most common combination is Alzheimer's and vascular dementia, but other types can be
present as well
