Disinfection In

Animal Houses
Cleaning and Disinfection (C&D) programs

Disinfection: a process that Disinfectant: (practical definition) :

eliminates many or all pathogenic Achieving at least 5 log reductions
microorganisms, except bacterial in microbes number i.e.; (99.999%
spores, on inanimate objects (CDC ) from the original number will be
Definition). removed after treatment
How cleaning affects the disinfection process
quality ?
Cleaning is the removal
of soil (e.g., organic and Organic mater will
inorganic material) from 1. Neutralize / Deactivate
objects and surfaces and Organic matter =
Disinfectants, Microbes WHILE
normally is accomplished
mechanically using High 2. Shelter less organic
pressure water or microorganisms and matter = less
chemically using 3. Create resistant microbes
chemical detergents or microbial strains
enzymatic detergent.
DO NOT DISINFECT DIRTY AREA

How to Apply ? (Application methods)
Cleaning : Pressure washer ( sprayer)
90 bar
Don’t use High Pressure Cleaning in any house infected with epidemic Respiratory disease
How to Apply ?
Cleaning : Foam application
Low pressure cleaning – Visible – High contact time – less water and detergents consumption
Favorable incase of respiratory epidemics
How to Apply ?
Disinfection : Low Pressure Spray (35 bar)
Disinfection : Foam Spray
How to Apply ?
Aerial Disinfection

Calculation ( Application rate)

Disinfection (Surface) : Every 1 m2

Cleaning : Every 1 m2 needs (0.5 l needs (0.3 l water and disinfectant ) to
water and detergent) to be thoroughly be thoroughly immersed and
immersed and cleaned ( incase of disinfected incase of no specific
spraying ) and (0.3 l water and pathogenic problem and (0.4 l to 0.5 l
detergent ) incase of foaming water and disinfectant ) incase of
outbreaks

How to Disinfect A cattle House infected with FMDV
Empty House – Cement Floor
• Remove all old animal bedding , feed, and water from the house / yard.
• Strat with the dry cleaning phase.
• Spray the house with Alkaline detergent solution at the rate of 0.5 l/m2. (2%) Or 1kg sodium
hydroxide /4 liter water
• Spray the house again with FMD approved disinfectant at the rate of 0.4l/m2. (NaoH,
Na.Carbonate, citric acid, KMPS)
• The removed mud, and bedding should be sprayed with Sodium Hydroxide solution until Ph 11 is
For 5 days.
• Feed and water troughs must also included in the disinfection phase.
• In closed houses aerial disinfection must be applied.
How to Disinfect A cattle House infected with
FMDV Occupied House – MUD Floor
• When the Animals can not be moved from the house the suspected animals should be quarantined in a
separate house against the wind direction.
• Soil should be sprayed with Approved FMD disinfectant which must be mixed with alkaline detergent at
the rate of 100 ml to 1 liter disinfectant.
• Soil should be sprayed with previous mix at the rate of l / m2 .
• Remove the first 10 cm from the mud
• The removed mud, and bedding should be sprayed with Sodium Hydroxide solution until Ph 11 is For 5
days.
• Water must be sanitized with appropriate sanitizer.
• Air should be disinfected via fogging every 6 hrs.
• The yard surroundings should be also disinfected.
How to Disinfect A cattle House infected with
Tuberculosis Occupied House – MUD Floor
• Soil should be sprayed with 5 % (iodophor – 3% titratable iodine)
• Soil should be sprayed with previous mix at the rate of l / m2 .
• Remove the first 10 cm from the mud
• The next 10 cm from the mud should be sprayed with synthetic phenol formula (5%)
• Remove the second 10 cm from the mud
• Don’t remove the next 10 cm (VIPPPPPP)
• The removed mud, and bedding should be sprayed with Sodium Hydroxide solution until Ph 11 is reached and
hygienically buried
• Water must be sanitized with appropriate sanitizer.
• The yard surroundings should be also disinfected.
