What is a Pile Foundation

It is a foundation system that transfers

loads to a deeper and competent soil layer.

When To Use Pile Foundations

• Inadequate Bearing Capacity of Shallow

Foundations

• To Prevent Uplift Forces

• To Reduce Excessive Settlement

PILE FOUNDATION
• Piles are generally used in groups
• The allowable or design load is always
determined for a single pile
• The design load may be either determined
from considerations of shear failure or
settlement
– Allowable load obtained by dividing the ultimate
failure load with a factor of safety LOWER
– Load corresponding to an allowable settlement of
the pile
PILE CLASSIFICATION-
load transfer mechanism

Friction Pile Load Bearing Resistance

derived mainly from skin friction

End Bearing Pile Load Bearing

Resistance derived mainly from base

Combined
PILE CAPACITY

• Piles fail individually When installed at

large spacing

• Piles fail as a block When installed at

close spacing
PILE LOAD CAPACITY
• The load carrying capacity of the pile
foundation can be calculated by different
methods
– Static formulae
– Dynamic formulae
– Pile load test
– Correlations with standard penetration test
Static Formulae
• The static formulae for ultimate load carrying
capacity of pile based on soil properties and
pile geometry
