Wrong Weight: When a trader professes to sell at the cost price, but uses a false weight,
then the percentage profit earned = 100×Error/True Weight-Error

Successive Discounts: When a tradesman offers more than one discount to the
customer, then sometimes you are required to calculate the single discount using the
concepts of percentages.

Single discount, which is equal to two successive discounts of m % and n

% =M + N + MN/100 ֜ (-20) + (-10) + (-20)(-10)/100 ֜-20 – 10 + 2 = - 28. Hence the

PROBABILITIES ,PERMUTATIONS AND COMBINATIONS

Date:--------------------

AIM: Explain the concepts of Probability Permutations and Combinations for given raw data .

THEORY:

1)P(event) = (Number of favorable outcomes) / (Total number of outcomes)

2) P(A)+ P( A )=1

3) 0 P(A) 1

4) P(AŀB) = P(A) ‫ڄ‬P(B) where A & B are Independent Events

5) P(AU B) = P(A)+ P(B)- P(A B) where A & B are dependent Events

Permutation Formula
If the total number of data is “n” and the choice is of “r” things, then permutation will be (without
n
replacement and regarding an order)- Pr = (n!) / (n-r)!

Combination Formula
From a group of “n” data, the selection of “r” things without regarding order and replacement-

n Cr = (nr) = nP r/ r! = n! / {r! (n-r)!}

These are the key formulas to find out probability permutations and combinations. Moreover, the
n
relation between these two is nCr = Pr / r!.

CLOCKS AND CALENDARS

Date:--------------------

AIM: Explain the concepts of Clocks and Calendars .

THEORY:

¾ A clock is a complete circle having 360 degrees. It is divided into 12 equal parts i.e. each part is 360/12
= 30°.

¾ As the minute hand takes a complete round in one hour, it covers 360° in 60 minutes.
In 1 minute it covers 360/60 = 6°/ minute.

¾ The hour hand covers just one part out of the given 12 parts in one hour. This implies it covers 30° in 60
minutes i.e. ½° per minute.

¾ This implies that the relative speed of the minute hand is 6 - ½ = 5 ½ degrees.
¾ The hands are in the same straight line when they are coincident or opposite to each other.

¾ Example 1: At what time between 10 and 11 will the minute and hour hand be at right angles?

¾ Solution: At 10 O'clock, the hour hand has covered (10*30°) = 300°.

¾ Note: There will be two right angles (clockwise and anti-clockwise)

Considering that hour hand is at 10, to make a 90-degree angle with the hour hand, the minute hand has
to be at 1 or 7.
For the first right angle, minute hand has to cover a relative distance of (1*30) = 30°.
For the 2nd right angle, minute hand has to cover a relative distance of (7*30)= 210°.

We know that the relative speed between the two hands is of 5 ° per minute.

Hence, time required for the 1st right angle = = or 5 minutes.

Time required for the 2nd right angle = = = 38 minutes.

¾ Type 2 : Finding the angle between the two hands at a given time.

¾ Example 1: The angle between the minute hand and the hour hand of a clock when the time is 4:20 is:

48
II B.TECH II SEM ECE APTITUDE & CRITICAL THINKING LAB

¾ Solution: At 4:00, hour hand was at 120 degrees.Using the concept of relative distance, the minute hand

will cover = =110 degrees

The angle between the hour hand and minute hand is = 120-110 = 10 degrees.

¾ Example 2: The angle between the minute hand and the hour hand of a clock when the time is
3:30 is:

¾ Solution:At 4:00, hour hand was at 90 degrees.Using the concept of relative distance, the minute hand

will cover = =165 degrees

The angle between the hour hand and minute hand is = 165-90= 75 degrees.

Calendars
1) In an ordinary year, there are 365 days, which means 52 x 7 + 1, or 52 weeks and one day. This
additional day is called an odd day. The concept of odd days is very important in calendars.

a) 100 years give us 5 odd days as calculated above.

b) 200 years give us 5 x 2 = 10-7 (one week) => 3 odd days.

c) 300 years give us 5 x 3 = 15-14 (two weeks) => 1 odd day.

d) 400 years give us {5 x 4 + 1 (leap century)}-21} => 0 odd days.

3) If Sunday falls on 4th April, 1992. What was the day on 3rd Nov. 1991?
A. Tuesday B. Friday C. Wednesday D. Saturday
Sol : Option D
3.4.92 was Monday.
Number of days from 3.4.92 to 3.11.91
= 4 + 31 + 29 + 31 + 31 + 27 = 153.
Hence number of odd days = 153/7֜6
Hence the day on 3.11.91 was 6 days behind Sunday i.e. Saturday.

4) It was Thursday on 2nd Jan 1997. What day of the week will be on 15th March 1997?
A. Tuesday B. Saturday C. Sunday D. Thursday
Sol : Option B
2.1.97 was Thursday.
Number of days from 2.1.97 to 15.3.97
= 29 + 28 + 15 = 72.Hence number of odd days = 72/7֜2
Hence the day on 15.3.97 will be 2 days ahead of Thursday i.e. Saturday.

5) What was the day on 29th January, 1950?

A. Friday B. Sunday C. Wednesday D. Saturday
Sol : Option B
29.1.1950. Upto 1900, number of odd days = 1. From 1900 to 1949, there are 49 years in which 12 are
leap years and 37 are normal years.Total number of odd days = (12 2) + (37 1) = 24 + 37 = 61 5.
Also 29 days of January will have 1 odd day. Hence the total number of days = 1 + 5 + 1 = 7 =0 odd
days
Hence the day on this date i.e. 29.1.1950 was Sunday.

GEOMETRY AND MENSURATION

Date:--------------------

AIM: Explain the concepts of Geometry and Mensuration for given figures.

THEORY:

A line is a straight path that is endless in both directions. That means it extends in both directions without
end. A line segment is a part of a line. The main difference the line and the line segment is that lines do
not have endpoints while line segments have endpoints.

Angle is the combination of two rays with a common endpoint. The symbol for an angle is ‫ס‬. The corner
point of an angle is called the vertex of an angle. The two straight sides of the angle are the arms of the
angle.

Polygon: Any closed figure formed by joining the line segments only

Triangles

Based on Sides Types of Triangle

1) Scalene Triangle: A triangle in which none of the three sides is equal is called a scalene triangle.
2) Isosceles Triangle: A triangle in which at least two sides are equal is called an isosceles triangle.
3) Equilateral Triangle: Equilateral triangle is a unique triangle in which all the angles & all the sides are
equal.

Based on Angles Types of Triangle

1) Acute Triangle: If all the three angles of a triangle are acute i.e., less than 90°, then the
triangle is an acute-angled triangle.

52
II B.TECH II SEM ECE APTITUDE & CRITICAL THINKING LAB

2) Obtuse Triangle: If any one of the three angles of a triangle is obtuse (greater than 90°), then that
particular triangle is said to be an obtuse angled triangle. Note: the remaining two angles of an obtuse
angled triangle are always acute.

3) Right Triangle: If any of the three angles of a triangle is a right angle (i.e. exactly 90°), then that
particular triangle is know as the right angled triangle.

Circle: A circle is the set of all points in the plane that are a fixed distance (the radius) from a fixed
point (the centre). Any interval joining a point on the circle to the centre is called a radius.

An interval joining two points on the circle is called a chord.

A chord that passes through the centre is called a diameter.

A line that cuts a circle at two distinct points is called a secant.

A tangent to a circle is a line that meets the circle at just one point.

VIVA VOICE:

1) In a triangle ABC, AB = 9, BC = 10, AC = 13. Find the length of median AD. If G is the centroid, find
GA and GD
Answers: By Apollonius theorem, AB2 + AC2= 2 * (AD)2 + 2 * (DC)2
‫׵‬81 + 169 = 2 * (AD)2 + 2 * (5)2 ‫׵‬250 = 2 * (AD)2 + 2 * (5)2
‫׵‬125 = AD2 + 25…..(Dividing by 2) ‫׵‬100 = AD2‫׵‬10 = AD ‫׵‬Median = 10.
Since G divides AD in the ratio 2: 1 So, GA = 2/3 * AD = 2/3 * 10 = 20/3,GD = 1/3 * 10 = 10/3.

2) ¨PQR is a right angled triangle, right angled at P & PS is the altitude to QR. If PQ = 8 and PS =
15, find QR and altitude PS. If T is the midpoint of QR, find PT.

54
II B.TECH II SEM ECE APTITUDE & CRITICAL THINKING LAB

Answers :By the theorem of Pythagoras, QR2 = 82 + 152 = 64 + 225 = 289 ‫׵‬QR = ¥289 = 17

Area of the triangle = 1/2 * Product of perpendicular sides = ½ * 8 *15 = 60.

Also area = 1/2 * QR * PS = 60 = 1/2 * 17 * PS = 60
‫׵‬PS = 120/17
Again, PT is the median to the hypotenuse.
‫׵‬PT = 1/2 * hypotenuse = 1/2 * 17 = 8.5.

3) If a circle is provided with measure of 19° on centre, is it possible to divide the circle into 360
equal parts?

Answers: Since, we are given a measure of a 19° angle, if we use the measure 19 times, we would be
able to measure 361° and hence, we can measure 361 – 360 = 1°.Hence, it would be possible to divide
the circle into 360 equal parts.

4) The values in x and y in the given figure are measure of angles. The value of x + y is equal to

Anwers: As ‫ס‬B + ‫ס‬D = 180°

and ‫ס‬A + ‫ס‬C = 180° So, x + 10 + 5y + 5 = 180° or, x + 5y = 165° ........(i)

And 2x + 4 + 4y – 4 = 180° or, 2x + 4y = 180° ..........(ii)

Solving (i) and (ii), we get x = 40° and y = 25° Hence, x + y = 40° + 25° = 65°.

5) A cistern 6m long and 4 m wide contains water up to a depth of 1 m 25 cm. The total area of the wet
surface is:

Answer: Area of the wet = [2(lb + bh + lh) - lb]

surface
