A Switzerland that is for children – this is the vision of Kinder-
schutz Schweiz (Child Protection Switzerland). To give chil-
dren a voice also in difficult situations, the foundation has
developed ‘Emmo’, a cuddly monster toy. It helps children
show how they feel while helping parents to recognise emo-
tional situations before they escalate.
Daily stressful situations with their children can push parents to their
limits. When that happens, parents often overlook their children's feel-
ings or children cannot verbally express them. To help with this exact
problem, and as part of their multi-year national awareness campaign
focusing on ‘Strong Ideas – There is always an alternative to violence’,
Kinderschutz Schweiz specifically developed the cuddly toy Emmo.
"On average, there is one child in every school class who regularly expe-
riences physical violence at home," says Tamara Parham, communica-
tions director at Kinderschutz Schweiz. "With the little monster Emmo,
children can easily express their feelings without words."
In its initial state, Emmo smiles from cheek to cheek and signals,
‘I'm fine’. However, when Emmo is turned inside-out, a sad face
appears, and the child communicates in a simple way that they are
not feeling well.

Eine Schweiz für Kinder – das ist die Vision von Kinderschutz
Schweiz. Um Kindern auch in schwierigen Situationen eine
Stimme zu geben, hat Kinderschutz Schweiz ‚Emmo‘ ent-
wickelt. Das Plüschmönsterli hilft Kindern zu zeigen, wie es
ihnen geht und es hilft Eltern, emotionale Situationen zu er-
kennen, bevor diese eskalieren.
Alltägliche Stresssituationen im Umgang mit dem Nachwuchs können
die Eltern an ihre Grenzen bringen. Oft übersehen Eltern dabei die Ge-

SWISS BEER BRANDY
Rugen Distillery is one of the oldest breweries in Switzerland
and, since 2010, also a distillery. Here, special whiskies, gins
and beer brandy are produced, which stand out due to their
unique ingredients and maturation methods. Visitors can ex-
perience this traditional enterprise, in the Bernese Oberland,
up close and personal during a tour.
As one of the oldest breweries in Switzerland, Rugen Distillery has a
history of over 155 years. In addition to beer, it also produces whis-
key and gin. "In 1999, Rugen Distillery presented the first beer spirit
distilled in Switzerland. In that sense, the 'Fleur de Bière' is the moth-
er of the subsequent whisky boom and an important part of Switzer-
land's distilling history," managing director Remo Kobluk says.
The distillery uses the brewery's brewhouse to produce the whisky
mash. For single malt whisky, 100 per cent malted barley is pro-
cessed into a mash, fermented and then distilled in a pot still. The
distillate then matures over many years in special barrels from around
the world to produce a variety of whiskies.

Not only whisky, but also gin is produced at Rugen Distillery. "Our gin
is characterised by the Alpine botanicals, which also reflect our ori-
gin. Classically macerated with juniper berry, herbs and spices, our
three gin variants form a great portfolio for all gin lovers," master dis-
tiller Philip Zollner says. Each gin passes over a 15-million-year-old
rock crystal during distillation, which is also part of the brand's logo.

Die Rugen Distillery ist eine der ältesten Brauereien der Schweiz
und seit 2010 auch eine Destillerie. Hier werden besondere
Whiskys, Gins und Bierbrand produziert, die durch ihre einzigar-
tigen Zutaten und Reifungsmethoden hervorstechen. Besucher
können die traditionsreiche Unternehmung im Berner Oberland
bei einer Besichtigung hautnah erleben.
Als eine der ältesten Brauereien der Schweiz hat die Rugen Distillery eine
über 155-jährige Geschichte vorzuweisen. Neben Bier wird auch Whisky
und Gin produziert. „Im Jahr 1999 präsentierte die Rugen Distillery den ers-
ten in der Schweiz destillierten Bierbrand. Die 'Fleur de Bière' ist so gesehen
die Mutter des darauffolgenden Whiskybooms und ein wichtiger Teil der
Destillations-Geschichte der Schweiz", sagt Geschäftsleiter Remo Kobluk.
Für die Herstellung der Whiskymaische nutzt die Destillerie das Sudhaus
der Brauerei. Beim Single Malt Whisky wird zu 100 Prozent vermälzte
Gerste zu einer Maische verarbeitet, vergoren und anschließend in einer
Pot Still destilliert. Danach reift das Destillat über viele Jahre in speziellen
Fässern aus der ganzen Welt zu einer Vielzahl von Whiskys heran.
Nicht nur Whisky, auch Gin wird bei der Rugen Distillery hergestellt. „Un-
seren Gin prägen die Alpinen Botanicals, welche auch unsere Herkunft
widerspiegeln. Klassisch mazeriert mit der Wacholderbeere, Kräutern und
Gewürzen bilden unsere drei Gin Varianten ein großes Portfolio für alle
Gin Liebhaber", sagt Master Distiller Philip Zollner. Jeder Gin läuft bei der
Destillation über einen 15 Millionen Jahre alten Bergkristall, der auch Teil
des Logos der Marke ist.
Die Whiskys und Gins der Rugen Distillery reifen in Felsenkellern der Rugen-
bräu AG und der 'Ice Label' wird im ewigen Eis auf dem Jungfraujoch gereift.

Austrian wines can be found on every great

Small yet spectacular: The Wachau is the

BADEN, GERMANY
Located in the sun-kissed southwestern cor-

est, Baden is the country's third-largest and
warmest wine region. Particularly well-known
is the wine area Kaiserstuhl. With a climate
comparable to Burgundy, Baden produces
high-quality Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), Pi-
not Gris (Grauburgunder) and Pinot Blanc
(Weissburgunder) wines. The Baden Wine
Route is a popular attraction for wine con-

hectares of vineyards. Freiburg or Heidelberg

A neighbour of the Wachau, the Kamptal
wine region in Lower Austria derives its name
from the Kamp River, which flows through
the area. It is a relatively small region, yet
it is becoming increasingly prestigious and

Vienna. The region is particularly famous for
its expressive Grüner Veltliner and Riesling
wines, which thrive in the loess and primary
rock soils. The charming town of Langenlois
is potentially the most important wine town

VALAIS, SWITZERLAND
Nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, the

AND MODERNITY
As a long-standing family business, the Hans Igler winery in
Austria's Burgenland skilfully bridges the gap between mo-
dernity and tradition. However, one thing has remained un-
changed – the grape takes centre-stage here.
The history of the winery began in 1960, when Maria and Hans Igler
received a hectare of vineyard as a wedding gift. Today run by the
third generation, it has grown to 35 hectares, and two more pres-
tigious Falstaff victories have been added to the original seven. The
success story clearly continues.
The Vulcano is the most famous wine from the Hans Igler estate. "It
is a cuvée of local and international varieties and was one of the first
in Austria back in 1988," says grandson Clemens Reisner, who runs
the winery with his wife Anna. "The Blaufränkisch Biiri is our strong-
est Blaufränkisch variant and comes from the old wine mountains of
Deutschkreutz."

You can enjoy the premium wines directly on site at wine tastings in
the unique Schaflerhof. The idyllic winery is also the perfect back-

to expansion it will soon have capacity for 100

Das Weingut Hans Igler im österreichischen Burgenland
schafft als langjähriger Familienbetrieb gekonnt den Spagat
zwischen Moderne und Tradition. Dabei steht nach wie vor
aber eins im Mittelpunkt: Die Traube.
Die Geschichte des Weinguts hat seinen Anfang 1960, als Maria und
Hans Igler als Geschenk zur Hochzeit einen Hektar Weingarten bekamen.
Heute wird das Weingut in dritter Generation geführt und ist auf 35 Hek-
tar gewachsen. Zu den sieben Falstaff-Gesamtsiegen von damals haben
sich zwei weitere dazu gesellt. Die Erfolgsgeschichte geht also weiter.
Der Vulcano ist der bekannteste Wein aus dem Hause Hans Igler. „Es
ist eine Cuvee aus heimischen und internationalen Sorten und war
1988 eine der ersten, die es in Österreich gab“, erzählt Enkel Clemens
Reisner, der mit seiner Frau Anna das Weingut leitet. „Der Blaufrän-
kisch Biiri ist unsere kräftigste Blaufränkisch Variante und kommt aus
dem alten Weingebirge von Deutschkreutz.“
Genießen kann man die edlen Tropfen auch direkt vor Ort bei span-
nenden Weinverkostungen im einzigartigen Schaflerhof. Dort kann man
übrigens auch wunderbar feiern, denn das idyllische Weingut ist als
Eventlocation die perfekte Kulisse für Hoch-
zeiten, Geburtstagsfeiern und Firmen-Events.
Kulinarisches, Ambiente, Service und beson-

WINE WITH TRADITION
German wine is the drink on everyone’s lips, with its reputation steadily increasing.
There are many prestigious wine estates that have contributed to this development,
including one long-established one: the Bürgerspital Wine Estate in Würzburg on
the river Main.
What began almost 700 years ago with the
donation of a vineyard, is today a wine es-
tate with an international reputation and first-
class Silvaner, Riesling and Pinot wines. As a
VDP vineyard, Bürgerspital Wine Estate be-
longs to the top 200 German wine estates.

What is so particular about the vineyard’s
wines? “As a VDP wine estate, we have a
simple philosophy: the closer the wines’ or-
igins, the higher the quality. The single vin-
yards, above all the VDP.GROSSE LAGE®
Würzburger Stein-Berg and our monopoly lo-
cation Würzburger Stein-Harfe, are our most
valuable treasures. One of the guarantees for
wines with exceptional character includes lim-
iting the varieties and yields,” stresses estate
director Robert Haller. “And, of course, there
is also our enthusiasm and love for the craft-
mansship for the product.”
With these components, Bürgerspital Wine
Estate produces high-class wines that cover

the entire VDP classification range: starting
with the ‘Gutswein’, a ‘wine for everyday’, to
the ‘Großes Gewächs’, a top wine of exclusive
character and a high degree of individuality.
Is there perhaps a link connecting this range?
“The Frankonian shell limestone soil gives our
wines an unmatched minerality. They are el-
egant, straightforward and of a pronounced
brilliance and finesse. Their style does not nec-
essarily follow the mainstream. But their clear,
mineral aromas make them perfect soloists as
well as excellent food companions. On all qual-
ity levels,” explains Haller.
This is owed to the careful environmental
and resource-conserving cultivation of the
grapes. ‘Deliberate idleness’ is the motto
of the estate wines’ vinification in assorted
oak-barrels in the historic cellar – the icing on
the cake that fully brings out the wines’ orig-
inality and the vinyard's particular character.
As part of the foundation Bürgerspital zum
Hl. Geist, the estate contributes to the pres-
ervation of the foundation’s purpose. By con-
tinuously combing tradition and innovation, it
has become a model for many wine estates
beyond Frankonia.
The wine estate is worth a visit for its spec-
tacular cellars alone. Events such as wine
tastings, wine festivals and tours through the
cellars, but also the exclusive offers on site, all
tempt visitors to an extended visit. The Wein-

the entire wine range as well as some great

TOP QUALITY AND A LONG HISTORY
The 300-year-old Kodolitsch winery represents a long tradition and top quality,
which is reflected in their many award-winning wines. If you are looking for fine Aus-
trian wines, you simply cannot pass up this winery.
For 300 years, the Kodolitsch family has had
a long tradition in winemaking. Despite the
challenges brought on by World War One,
the current owners, Christa and Nikolaus
Kodolitsch, developed the winery with great
passion and dedication into the outstanding
wine producer it is today, since taking it over
in the ‘90s. The current winemaker, Mario
Weber, has made it his mission to bring out
the characteristics of the terroirs from the
Rosengarten and Kogelberg vineyards in
endless variations, and he succeeds. The
vineyards are characterised by their different
soils and climatic conditions, which produce
wines with rich, profound maturity.
A particular focus is on the Sauvignon
Blancs, which make up almost 50 per cent
of the vineyard, followed by the Burgundy va-
rieties and, since 2019, also Riesling vines,
which thrive on the pure shale rock on Kogel-
berg. For the vintner family, nature is the best

Whether you happen to be in Munich, Ber-
lin, Hamburg or a small village in the west
of the country, Germany has a lot to offer
when it comes to food and restaurants. The
Michelin Guide Germany 2023, for example,
announced a new record number of 334
starred restaurants in total, a number that
includes one new three-Michelin star restau-
rant, eight new two-Michelin star restaurants
and 34 one-Michelin star restaurants.
“Despite the many challenges of the current
economic situation, the 2023 selection of
the Michelin Guide for Germany continues to
demonstrate a remarkably consistent qual-
ity in German gastronomy. Our inspection
team was amazed by the vitality of the 2023
vintage, and we are pleased to welcome
restaurant JAN into the Three-Star family,”
Gwendal Poullennec, the International Di-

rector of the Michelin Guides, said. “Local
professionals have defied many crises, all
the while aiming at offering their guests a
consistently high standard. It is also gratify-
ing to see the ever-increasing awareness of
restaurateurs for a more sustainable way of
working in their restaurants. Many of them
are committed to sustainability and focus on
regionality and seasonality in their cuisine.
This achievement, which is recognised in the
Michelin Guide with the 'Green Star', is very
well received by guests and is great encour-
agement for professionals to pursue their
commitment in this area."

A Bib Gourmand is also awarded by Miche-
lin’s team of inspectors to restaurants that are
considered of good quality and good value.
In fact, restaurants can only get a Bib Gour-

mand when they offer a menu that serves three
courses for a maximum of 37 euros. In 2023,
inspectors have awarded 28 new restaurants
with a Bib Gourmand, each one impressing
with good quality, as well as good value. In to-
tal, 274 restaurants now are considered a Bib
Gourmand restaurant in Germany.
Furthermore, 16 new Michelin Green Star
restaurants, an award that celebrates culi-
nary sustainability, have been added to the
2023 selection, bringing the total number to

A CULINARY DREAM TEAM
Enjoying gourmet cuisine while looking out over the Baltic Sea is a vision that be-
comes reality at Ostseelounge in Dierhagen Strand. Take a deep breath, relax and
enjoy some star-awarded food.
Ostseelounge resides at the very top of the
building, on Hotel Fischland’s roof, always
redefining the term gourmet cuisine. The
foodie hotspot, with a view of the Baltic Sea,
was awarded a Michelin star in 2014, which
it has held ever since.
The reason for this is, above all, the two chefs
André Beiersdroff and Matthias Stolze, who
never cease to impress with their skills. Both
worked in first-class, star-awarded restaurants
before their journey led them both to Dierhagen
and Ostseelounge. Stolze had already won a
star for the gourmet restaurant Der Butt in Ros-
tock, which he held for five years in a row.
How would the two chefs describe their cre-
ations? “We are close to the sea, so fish,
naturally, is on the menu. The best way to
describe our style is probably a harmon-
ic composition with regional-Mediterrane-

good, fine cuisine. Our service concept is
therefore quite relaxed; guest should feel com-

Set in the beautiful green woods of the Northern Spessart, the Behl family are proud

‘Behl’s Genusshotel’ translates as ‘Behl’s

the home-owned distillery are paired with

At its prime, Berlin was the beer capital of Germany, with over 100 breweries situated in the city, leaving an industrial
legacy that can still be seen throughout the urban landscape to this very day. Although the industry went through
huge change over the previous century, the city is now seeing a renaissance, this time in the craft beer scene. With
new craft beer breweries opening every year, we take a look into what is driving Berlin’s craft beer explosion.

Opening its doors for the first time in Berlin’s
Prenzlauer Berg district back in 2019, Bräu-
gier is one of the most recent additions to
the city’s craft beer scene. Founded by Brian
Trauth, his wife Dasha Smolina, and brew-
master Johannes Dunkel, the brewery was
set up to inject some new creativity into the
Berlin craft scene.
Originally from the States, Trauth had been
working throughout Europe in various cor-
porate jobs, before deciding to follow his
passion. “I took a keen interest in what was
happening in the brewing scene, [but] wasn’t
blown away by the beers I was drinking. I
thought to myself: I can do better than this.”
Alongside Dunkel, Trauth started to brew
back in 2017, sticking to the adage, ‘De-
fend das Bier’. This meant that experimen-
tation would always reign, pushing for quality
above everything else. “It’s easy to say what
a craft beer is,” explains Trauth. “Craft beer
is good quality, well-made beer, with a focus
on flavour over price.”
During this time, Berlin was abundant with
new craft beer brewers. German brands such
as Schoppe Bräu, Hops & Barley and BRLO,
amongst others, were already introducing
new flavours to the local market. It wasn’t
long before international brewers came
onto the scene as well, such as Vagabund
and Protokoll. And then in 2019, Brewdog
opened their European brewing headquar-
ters in the city, with a 2,500-square-metre
tap room located in an old 20th-century gas-

The unique Coreum event location, in Stockstadt on the Rhine, offers inspiring
spaces where creativity and new ideas for the building sector can prosper.
The first visual impression at Coreum is domi-
nated by gigantic machinery, as both the idea
and initiation for the unique event location are
the brainchild of a building machine manu-
facturer. But even though the building sector
is known to be a rather rugged and noisy
branch of industry, the modern and light-filled
Coreum architecture, marked by glass and
wood elements, suggests a peaceful yet in-
spiring space at which to summon new ideas.
Versatile conference and event spaces offer
room for parties from two to 850 people, in-
cluding home-owned gastronomy and, as of
April 2023, an entire new hotel. The 12-me-
tre-high Expo hall, for example, features
1,360 square metres of floor space alone,
and can thus present both new ideas and

BLUE PARADISE
The Brandenburg Lake District to the north of
Berlin is known as the ‘blue paradise’. In Ber-
lin, where waterways are more crowded, it is
mandatory to have a license, but boaters who
start off in Potsdam can still travel along the
waterways without it. A popular tour leads from
there on the Havel to Lake Plauer See. Along
the way, cultural sights like medieval church-
es, castles and magnificent manor houses en-
chant effortlessly. A two-day tour for beginners
not requiring a special boating license awaits
in the Lusatian Lake District between Berlin
and Dresden. The region was formerly a lignite
mining area and is now being transformed into
Europe's largest man-made water landscape.
Over the next few years, 20 lakes will be cre-
ated where excavators tore up the earth and
surface mines were formed years ago. Part of
the future territory is already navigable.

Having worked as a marketing and business executive in large companies such as Unilever and L’Oréal, executive coach,
speaker and consultant Dominik Schneider has experienced the pressure to conform to limiting male role models himself.
Today, he inspires men to recognise their limiting ‘alpha roles’, to make their leadership fit for the requirements of the changing
business world.

DISCOVER GERMANY: How did you become

a leadership coach and consultant? Has
this always been your dream job?

DOMINIK SCHNEIDER: I have spent 15

years as a marketing executive in large com-
panies such as Unilever, Coca-Cola, and
L'Oréal. Throughout my career, the topic of
men and our stereotypical role models has
been a constant companion. Personally, I
have experienced the pressure of conform-
ing to the image of a successful male leader
who is always strong, shows no emotions,
and relentlessly pursues success. Drawing
on these experiences, I have made it my mis-
sion to help men understand our own limiting
role models and develop leadership styles
that are beneficial for us, allowing us to thrive
in an ever-changing work environment.

DISCOVER GERMANY: What is your ‘Beyond

Alpha’ programme? What do you want to
achieve with your coaching approach?

DOMINIK SCHNEIDER: With 'Beyond Alpha',

my aim is to inspire men to develop a leader-
ship style that is beneficial for both, themselves
and the people they work with. Through this
approach, we can create a management style
that reflects our authentic personality while
meeting the demands of the rapidly evolving
business world. The days of being 'alpha men'
are over. The leaders of the future need to meet
new requirements such as self-reflection, em-
pathy, adaptability, diversity, and communica-

for men to ask themselves how they want to
overcome outdated role models; otherwise,
they risk losing their effectiveness in the future.
DISCOVER GERMANY: What are the
core problems for men in management
positions today? What do you experience
often?
DOMINIK SCHNEIDER: I often observe that
men struggle with adapting to change in their
everyday work lives because we are not ac-
customed to questioning our typical leader-
ship styles. The role models of male leader-
ship that we are expected to emulate have
been deeply ingrained in us since childhood,
often subtly. Our understanding of gender
roles is shaped by the stereotypes that are
presented to us in children's books and
advertising: girls wear pink and enjoy being
princesses, while boys wear blue and play
with pirates. The themes remain constant:
men must be strong, stoic, assertive, and
dominant, and must never show vulnerability.
These expectations persist in the business
world for men.
DISCOVER GERMANY: Why are 'alpha roles'
often problematic for men?

DOMINIK SCHNEIDER: In the business
environment, time pressure, cutthroat com-
petition, and the need to succeed are every-
day occurrences. As a man and a leader, it
becomes quickly apparent that I must be
strong, all-knowing, and constantly pre-
sentable, treat my career as a battleground,
suppress my emotions, and work until I am
exhausted. However, these expectations are
unhealthy for many of us, as they generate a
great deal of pressure. Presently, men have a
heart attack rate twice that of women. Addi-
tionally, the psychological impact can be felt,
with five percent of us experiencing depres-
sion each year, and many cases going unre-
ported due to the fact that men tend to seek
medical attention less frequently.
DISCOVER GERMANY: How can these
roles be overcome?
DOMINIK SCHNEIDER: There is no quick
fix solution. The entire process requires hard
work and dedication. The initial step for me
is self-reflection, which involves becoming
aware of my stereotypical patterns. I need to
question myself about the beliefs I have in-
ternalized, how they influence me, and how
they shape my thoughts and actions. At the

outset, thought-provoking questions could
revolve around my beliefs about what consti-
tutes a genuine male leader, how those beliefs
were formed, and how my past employers
and corporate cultures have influenced them.
DISCOVER GERMANY: How do you help
men with this topic?
DOMINIK SCHNEIDER: In my opinion, the
most critical aspect is to bring this topic to
the forefront and acknowledge the need for
reflection and transformation among men. I
aim to provide information that allows men
to explore this issue. As a man with personal
experience in the business world, I encour-
age executives to become role models by
shedding the alpha male stereotype and en-
abling other men to do the same. I offer men
a safe and open space to exchange ideas
because I have noticed that very few men
have the opportunity, whether personally or
professionally, to truly express themselves.
DISCOVER GERMANY: Tips and tricks for
a healthier life for men?
DOMINIK SCHNEIDER: I aim to inspire men
to alter their outlook and tap into their complete

potential. I encourage them not to fear vulner-

ability and to acknowledge their weaknesses
instead of always projecting an omnipotent
alpha persona. None of us is an indomitable
superman. This realization helps alleviate the
pressure and promotes self-kindness. Moreo-
ver, as a leader, it is a vital indication to my team
that I lead by showing emotional vulnerability
and encouraging others to do the same, as it
creates a real emotional connection.

DISCOVER GERMANY: What else is

planned for 2023?

DOMINIK SCHNEIDER: I am excited to meet

new and interesting individuals, which will ena-
ble me to learn more about the topic and fur-
ther develop myself. At present, I am delivering
presentations for companies at conferences
and leadership meetings, to introduce the top-
ic and raise awareness among the audience.
Additionally, I offer customized workshops for
companies to strengthen teams and facilitate
mutual exchanges regarding one's own role
models and discovering new perspectives. Fur-
thermore, I engage in individual coaching ses-
sions with male leaders, encouraging them to
reflect on their role models and develop strate-
gies to overcome them.

DISCOVER GERMANY: Last but not least,

what are dreams and wishes for the future?

DOMINIK SCHNEIDER: Above all, I hope

that men in general, but particularly in busi-
ness, come to realize that it is beneficial to
move beyond competing with each other and
instead become allies. This is equally impor-
tant for those who do not identify as men. I
am convinced that we can face the significant
challenges of the future more effectively if we
work together as equals!!

Channeling Swiss food memories
I love chocolate. And I’m particularly fond of
Swiss chocolate products. Why am I say-
ing this? Because I was recently reminded
of how much I like Swiss chocolate when I
came across a new brand of it. Well, new for
me, because I then learned that it’s actually
not new at all. When I told my sister about my
‘discovery’, the response was “Whaaat? You
didn’t know that brand? You, of all people?”,
while a German friend who spends half her
time in Switzerland told me “Well, of course,
that’s the best on the market”. In case you’re
interested, we’re talking about Läderach.
Which I very much recommend trying, if you
haven’t done so already – and no one is pay-
ing me for that, by the way. Just a tip from
one chocolate lover to any other chocolate
lover who might be out there.
Anyway, this whole ‘Swiss chocolate in Lon-
don’ episode triggered more Swiss food
memories. My family regularly spent time in
Switzerland when I was a child and teenag-
er, and one of the things I liked most about
being there was – the food. Things that ei-
ther didn’t exist in Germany or were just that
bit better or more refined. I remember those
chocolate-coated mini pralines. Yes, more

chocolate and oh so delicious. I remember
the small ‘Butterbrezel’ (buttered pretzels)
that were completely different to the ones
we have in Germany that my mother always
bought in that tiny bakery in Lenzerhei-
de. Anyone know if it’s still around? Let me
know! Oh, and I remember those yoghurts
in different tastes (my favourite, needless to
say, was chocolate); not sweet and artificial
but fresh and tasty and, already in the early
1980s, environmentally friendly by being sold
in glass jars that you cleaned and brought
back to the supermarket.
I also remember the very specific Swiss pa-
tisserie, because Swiss cakes are different to
German ones. Basically, everything is a bit
smaller and more sophisticated – and they
had wonderful lemon tartlets which we don’t
have in Germany. And I love anything cake
and lemon related – bliss! By now, you might
be thinking that all I ate was sweets, so let’s
move on to the savoury section. I also re-
member Zürcher Geschnetzeltes with Rösti
and I specifically remember our Swiss break-
fast times where I had Appenzeller cheese
and Kalbslyoner and, even as a child, noticed
that the latter, a cold cut, was much more

the uniquely Swiss Nussgipfel pastry – and
will have to stop this here. Writing about food
is dangerous, I’m way too hungry now. So, to
summarise: food memories are very strong
– and to have Swiss ones, is not the worst.
