THE GREAT GATSBY Chapter 7: Frame of

Reference
What is each character thinking, feeling, or experiencing after the automobile accident
in Chapter 7? For each character, record his/her thoughts, feelings, and reaction
immediately following the automobile accident. Use at least one piece of textual
evidence (per character) to support your ideas.

Gatsby Gatsby was doing everything in his power to be with Daisy. It's clear that he loves her, and he is devastated to
learn that she might not pick him over Tom. In the novel Fitzgerald states "She never loved you, do you hear?he
cried. She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but
in her heart she never loved any one except me!" (Fitzgerald 130).

TOM Tom is probably feeling a mixed feeling of emotions. He might feel accomplished by the fact that Daisy chose him over
Gatsby at first but he also might feel worried and concerned about his affair being told to the public. In the novel
Fitzgerald states "Even that's a lie. [...] She didn't know you were alive. Why-- there 're things between Daisy and me that
you'll never know. things that neither of us can ever forget" (Fitzgerald 132).

Daisy Daisy was also feeling mixed emotions because she didn't know who to choose, she didn't want to love
the wrong one. In the text Fitzgerald states " Oh you want too much! [...] I love you now isn't that enough? I
can't help what's past.[...] Even alone I can't say I never loved Tom" (Fitzgerald 132-133).

MR. WILSON Mr. Wilson was in shock finding out his wife Myrtle was having an affair that it literally made him sick . In the novel
Fitzgerald states " The shock [has] made him physically sick” (Fitzgerald 124).
Nick Nick is a very observant character who is confused and shocked by everything
that was going on. In the text Fitzgerald states "At this point Jordan and I tried
but Tom and Gatsby insisted with competitive firmness that we remain as
though neither of them had anything to conceal and it would be a privilege to
partake vicariously of their emotions" ( Fitzgerald 131)

MAKE A PREDICTION
Given the events of Chapter 7 and the different characters’ reactions, predict what
might happen in Chapter 8 (or 9).

Given the events that occurred in Chapter 7 I can infer that Gatsby and Daisy's
relationship might go forward but I also feel as if Gatsby will take the blame for Daisy's
hit and run incident in which she killed Myrtle.
