Trou le is, while recent versions of Photoshop have aimed to make the
software more approacha le for designers and non-designers alike,
there's still a learning curve for those lacking experience with Ado e
tools. That's wh we created this marketer's guide -- designed to serve
as a gentle introduction to an incredi l ro ust tool.

o follow along with the tips and video tutorials elow to test our
knowledge and get some practical experience working within the
Photoshop interface. We'll start walking ou through some asic
actions, then move ou through some simple text effects and
retouching skills so ou can start creating and editing images and
designs without having to ug a designer or freelancer ever time.
The Menu ar
Located at the ver top of the screen, this main menu ar features
dropdowns for File, dit, Image, La er, T pe, etc. From these menus
ou can access a variet of different command and actions.

Located just under the Ado e Photoshop title, the Options ar serves
as a home for options and settings that are specific to a particular tool
ou are working with.

Located at the far left of our screen, the Tools Panel houses all of the
tools ou'll need to edit images and creating designs. The small white
arrows next to each tool indicate that there are similar tools that can e
accessed simpl clicking and holding the icon in the Tools Panel.
For example, clicking and holding the Crop Tool will reveal the
Perspective Crop Tool, the lice Tool, and the lice elect Tool.

Located in the ottom, right corner of our screen, the Panels area
allows ou to adjust color, la ers, and other properties needed to edit
and adjust images. For a full list of panel options, select Window from
the main Menu ar.
Note: The following tips and tutorials were created using Photoshop
CC 2018 (19.0.0). If ou're using an older version, some features ma
work a little differentl , ut ou should still e a le to follow along. For

What It Is: The Move Tool allows ou to adjust and reposition selections
or different la ers.
How to Use It: elect the Move Tool from the Tools Panel. Then, select
the la er ou wish to move from the La ers Panel and click and drag
that la er around however ou want. To align elements and la ers
using the Move Tool, go to elect > All in the main menu, then toggle
through the Alignment Icons in the Options ar.
How to Use It: elect the Rectangular Marquee Tool from the Tools
Panel. Then, move over to the image and click and drag a rectangular
selection that ou want to isolate. You can also click and hold the
Rectangular Marquee Tool to reveal the Marquee Tools Panel where

the lliptical Marquee Tool, ingle Column Marquee Tool, and ingle
Row Marquee Tool live.
To add to our selection, click the Add to election Icon in the Options
ar, then click inside the top right corner of our existing selection and
drag to create a new selection that will allow ou to expand the
existing selection further. When ou release, the two selections will
merge.
To su tract from our selection, click the u tract From election Icon
in the Options ar, then click and drag over the portion ou want to
remove from our existing selection. When ou release, the portion will
disappear.
With a portion of the image now selected, ou can make an edit to the
remainder of the image while leaving the selected content untouched.
To deselect, click elect > Deselect from the main Photoshop menu.
( hortcut: elect Cmd+D on a Mac or Ctrl+D on a PC to quickl
deselect.)

How to Use It: elect the Quick election Tool from the Tools Panel.
Then, click and drag the tool across the part of the image ou wish to
select. You'll notice that the tool does a lot of the work for ou, stopping
selection onl when an edge is detected.
To select more of the image, continue to click and drag across the
desired section of the image to expand the existing selection.
To remove part of a selection, select the Opt ke on a Mac or the
Alt ke on a PC and click and drag over the area ou wish to
remove.
To create a precise selection, select the Quick election Tool from
the Tools Panel and make a selection. Then, click elect & Mask
from the Options ar or Option > elect & Mask from the main
menu to open the elect & Mask Workspace.
You can adjust the view selecting an option from the View
dropdown on the right side of this workspace. These views are
designed to help ou create contrast and determine whether or not
ou've selected ever thing ou'd intended to. If ou need to make
adjustments, ou'll find tools like the Lasso Tool, Zoom Tool, and the
Hand Tool availa le on the right side of our workspace.

What It Is: The Magic Wand Tool allows ou to make smart selections
ased on color.
How to Use It: elect the Magic Wand Tool from the Tools Panel. Then,
click an area of our image that ou wish to select. If the area is all the
same color, the Magic Wand Tool will select the entire area.

What It Is: The Crop Tool allows ou to trim images and adjust
proportions.
How to Use It: To crop an image, select the Crop Tool in the Tools
Panel to generate a crop order. Then, drag the edges or corners to
shrink the crop order. To adjust the position, click and drag inside the
crop order. Note: The gre areas will e cropped awa .
When ou're satisfied with the positioning, select the check mark from
the Options ar to finish the crop. ( hortcut: elect Return on a Mac or
nter on a PC to quickl finish the crop.)

What It Is: The lice Tool allows ou to divide an image into different
sections.
How to Use It: To slice an image, select the lice Tool in the Tools
Panel. Then, move to the image and click and drag to draw out a slice.
You can reposition the slice simpl clicking and dragging it around
the image. Note: the corresponding slices created around our slice
selection will adjust automaticall as ou reposition it.
To divide a slice, right click and select Divide lice, then adjust the
horizontal and vertical slice num ers to our liking.
To export our slices as separate images, select File > xport > ave
for We . Then, select each slice ou'd like to save.

Measuring Tools
How to Use It: elect the edropper Tool in the Tools Panel. Then,
click the color ou want to sample from our image or design.

What It Is: The Ruler Tool makes it eas for ou to position and adjust
elements ased on their measurements. You might use it to calculate
the distance etween two elements in a design.
How to Use It: elect the Ruler Tool in the Tools Panel. Then, click and
drag the Ruler from one point or element to another to find the
distance etween them. To constrain the proportions as ou measure,
hold down the hift ke .

How to Use It: To make an annotation, select the Note Tool from the
Tools Panel and click on a part of the image or design ou'd like to
comment on.
Note: These icons will not appear in the final version if ou choose to
print the image or design.

What It Is: The Count Tool makes it eas to count items in an image or
design tracking our clicks.
How to Use It: elect the Count Tool from the Tools Panel. Then, in the
Options ar, adjust the following settings:

When ou're happ with the settings, click on an element within our
photo or design to add a count to it.
elect File > New to create a rand new image. A new window will
appear where ou can select a lank document preset. Presets can e

To undo our last action, select dit > Undo. ( hortcut: elect Cmd + Z
on a Mac or Ctrl + Z on a PC.)
Zooming:
To zoom in or out on an image, select the Zoom Tool from the Tools
Panel. Then, toggle the + and - icons in the Options ar and click the
image to zoom in or out.
For continuous zoom, select the Zoom Tool from the Tools Panel. Then,
click and hold the Zoom Tool in a fixed spot to zoom in until ou reach
the pixel level.
Pro Tip: When the Zoom In Icon is active, hold the Opt ke on a Mac or
the Alt ke on a PC and click the image to quickl toggle etween the

two actions without have to click ack and forth in the Options ar.
Panning:
elect the Hand Tool from the Tools Panel. Then, click and drag our
image in the document window to move through the image and
inspect details.
Cropping:
To crop an image, select the Crop Tool in the Tools Panel to generate a
crop order. Then, drag the edges or corners to shrink the crop order.
To adjust the position, click and drag inside the crop order. Note: The
gre areas will e cropped awa .
When ou're satisfied with the positioning, select the check mark from

Resizing:
elect Image > Resize from the main Photoshop menu. In the resizing
panel that appears, input our desired dimensions and adjust the unit
of measurement (inches, pixels, etc.), if necessar .

Pro Tip: You can click and hold the Document ize Information at the
ottom of the Document Window to quickl reveal our image's current
dimensions.
To add a new la er, select the Turned Page Icon from the ottom of the
La ers Panel. To rename our la ers for organization, dou le-click the
existing la er name and t pe the desired new name. (Note: If ou can't
locate the La ers Panel, select Window > La ers from the main
Photoshop menu to make it visi le.)
You can easil review our La ers turning to the La ers Panel on the
right side of our work space.
To turn la ers off and on, select the e Icon next to each la er. To turn
all la ers off except for one, hold the Opt ke on a Mac or the Alt ke
on a PC and select the e e icon next to the la er ou want to keep
open.

Resizing La ers:
elect the la er our want tor resize from the La ers Panel. Then,
select dit > Free Transform from the main Photoshop menu. You'll
notice that resizing orders will appear around all of the images on the
selected la er.
Click and drag the edge of an image in or out while holding down the
hift ke to resize it. Then, select the check mark from the Options ar
to lock in the change.
ackground La ers:
elect File Menu > ave to quickl save changes made to an original
file.
elect File Menu > ave As to open up the advanced saving menu.
Here ou can adjust the file name to avoid altering the original file,
change the location for saving, and adjust the file format.

If ou're all finished and read to share our work, ou'll want to save it
as a PNG (.png) or JP G (.jpg).
T pe Tools Overview
What It Is: The Horizontal and Vertical T pe Tools allow ou to add text
to a la er in our document.
How To Use It: elect the Horizontal T pe Tool or the Vertical T pe Tool
from the Tools Panel. In the Options ar, adjust the font, size, st le,
alignment, and color of our t pe. Then, click on our image to egin
t ping.
To move to the next line, press Return (Mac) or nter (PC). To complete
the text entr , select the check mark in the Options ar or press nter.

How To Use It: elect the Horizontal or Vertical Mask Tool from the
Tools Panel. In the Options ar, adjust the font, size, st le, alignment,
and color of our t pe. Then, click on our image and egin t ping.
To complete the text entr , select the check mark in the Options ar.
Then, press Delete (Mac) or ackspace (PC) to delete ever thing
outside of the t pe selection.

Then, insert an image over the letter or word ou just placed. In the
La ers Panel, right-click on the image la er and select Create Clipping
Mask. You'll notice that the letter or word now contains the image ou
selected.
Want to take things one step further? Use this t pe effect to create a
reall cool quote image.

want to use on its own la er a ove that. Then, make a cop of the
image la er and click the e Icon to hide it while ou work.
elect the Rectangular Marquee Tool from the Tools Panel and click
and drag a rectangular shape over half of the image -- or whatever
our desired text space is. With the Image La er selected, click the
Add La er Mask icon at the ottom of the La ers Panel.
To add text, select the Horizontal T pe Tool from the Tools Panel and
drag out a text ox over the lank space ou created. Add our quote,
then unhide the Image Cop La er and right-click it to select Create a
Clipping Mask.
elect the T pe Tool from the Tools Panel and add a word to our
canvas. With the text la er selected, click on the 'add a la er st le' icon
at the ottom of the La ers Panel and select the Drop hadow option.
Noise: 0%
Repeat these steps until ou've reached the desired shadow length.
Go to the top navigation and choose Window > Timeline. The Timeline
will let ou turn different la ers on and off for different periods of time,
there turning our static image into a GIF.

the Timeline screen and choose 'Create new la er for each new frame.'
Under each frame, select how long it should appear for efore
switching to the next frame. We suggest start with 0.5 seconds per
frame.
At the ottom of the tool ar, select how man times ou'd like it to loop.
The default will sa Once, ut ou can loop it as man times as ou
want, including Forever. Click Other if ou'd like to specif a custom
num er of repetitions.

How to Use It: Use the Zoom Tool to zoom in on the area ou wish to
correct. Then, select the pot Healing rush Tool in the Tools Panel.
Use the Options ar to adjust the size and hardness of the tool, then
click a spot to remove it.
You can remove irregular shapes clicking and dragging the pot
Healing rush Tool over the shape.
Pro Tip: Use the [ ke to quickl shrink the size of the rush with each
click, and use the ] ke to make it igger.
What It Is: imilar to the Clone tamp Tool, the Healing rush allows ou
to sample surrounding pixels to correct imperfections or unwanted
o jects.
How It Works: elect the Healing rush tool from the Tools Panel. Then,
Opt-click (Mac) Alt-click (PC) on a part of the image ou want to sample.
With the sample loaded, position our cursor over the area ou want to
repair and egin painting using the rush.

What It Is: The Patch Tool allows ou to remove unwanted o ject within
an image.
How It Works: elect the Patch Tool from the Tools Panel. In the Options

Draw our selection and release to reveal "marching ants" around the
perimeter. Then, click and drag the selection over part of the image
ou'd like to pull from.
What It Is: The Red e Tool is used to correct the red glare from a
camera flash.
How It Works: elect the Red e Tool from the expanded pot
Healing rush menu in the Tools Panel.
Then, click on the red e e area and draw a selection around the part
ou wish ou correct. Release to complete the edit. You can adjust the
pupil size and darken amount making changes in the Options ar.

How It Works: elect the Clone tamp Tool from the Tools Panel. Then,
use the Options ar to adjust the size and hardness of the tool. To
select a part of the image to clone, hover over the image and select
the Opt ke on a Mac or the Alt ke on a PC until a target appears.
Click and release Opt or Alt, then move our cursor to another part of
the image to reveal our rush tip, which will now e "loaded" with the
visual ou just cloned. Drag the rush around to paint using our
cloned selection.

Rename the new la er "High Pass," then select lending Options and
select Overla from the lend Mode menu.

holding Alt to add a full mask.
