Cellular Radio Does Not Communicate

SMCS - 7606

When the PLE641 system develops a "Cellular Radio Does Not Commmunicate"" situation, certain steps can be
taken before traveling to the customer site. Follow the steps from the "Off-Site Diagnostics" in order to help
determine the fault before traveling to the customer site.

Off-Site Diagnostics
Note: Some steps of the "Off-Site Diagnostics" sections are dependent on the customer being on site.

1. Verify that the PLE641 system is in a location where cellular phone service should be available.

a. If cellular service is not readily available, the cellular radio will not able to communicate. Have the
customer move the asset to a location where cellular service is available.

b. If cellular service is available, proceed to Step 2.

2. Request the location of the machine. With the customer at the location of the asset, the following
questions may or may not be answered. Ask the customer if the asset is powered ON, and located where
the radios have clear line of sight to the sky.

a. If the asset was inside of a building, under/next to a large obstacle, or has the battery power OFF,
have the customer do the following:

Turn the key power ON if the power was OFF.

Attempt to move the asset to a more open location with a clear line of sight to the sky.

Select the "Refresh" on the equipment page in Product Link Web.

b. If the equipment was ON, and in a good location for data transfer, have the customer check to see if
the radio disable switch was disabled. The radio disable switch is a switch between the control
module and radios. When the radio disable switch is enabled, the power to the radios is off. If the
radio disable switch was enabled, then have the customer disable the radio disable switch, and
attempt a "Refresh" on the equipment page in Product Link Web.

On-Site Diagnostics
Note: Before any on-site diagnostics are performed all diagnostic procedures from the "Off-Site Diagnostics"
section should have been previously performed.

1. Connect the 425-6889 Cable As to the service port on the Network Manager and your laptop. Refer to
Systems Operation Troubleshooting Testing and Adjusting, UENR3697, "Service Dashboard" for
information on accessing and using the "Service Dashboard".

a. Service tool does not connect. Refer to Systems Operation Troubleshooting Testing and Adjusting,
UENR3697, "Electronic Tool Does Not Communicate" for information.

b. Service tool connects. Proceed to Step 2.

2. Check for any active or logged diagnostic codes.

a. If diagnostic codes are present, proceed to the diagnostic information for that specific code.

b. If diagnostic codes are not present, proceed to Step 3.

3. Perform the "Communication Check".

a. If the "Communication Check" is successful, return the asset to service.

b. If the "Communication Check" fails and the "Service Dashboard" screen shows that the cellular
radio has "No Connection", proceed to Step 4.

c. If the "Communication Check" fails and the "Service Dashboard" screen shows that the cellular
radio has a "Connection", proceed to Step 6.

4. Check the wiring from the Network Manager to the cellular radio.

a. Wiring has a problem. Repair wiring and return the asset to service.

b. Wiring is ok. Proceed to Step 5.

5. Replace the cellular radio and run a "Communication Check".

a. If the "Communication Check" succeeds, return the asset to service.

b. If the "Communication Check" fails, then proceed to Step 6.

6. Download the "Service Dashboard Data" and "System Watch" from the "Service Dashboard". Refer to
Systems Operation Troubleshooting Testing and Adjusting, UENR3697, "Service Dashboard". Submit
this information along with other necessary information to the DSN.
