Chapter No: 12 Uncle Podger Hangs a Picture

Answer the following questions.

a. How do we first learn that Uncle Podger does not do things


in a very organized manner?
An: When Uncle Podger sends the girl out for nails, he forgets to
tell her what size. He has to send one of the boys after her.
This is when we learn that he is not an organized man.
b. What are the two things that the girl has to do?
An: The girl has to get nails and then go out again and get some
picture-cored.
c. How does Uncle Podger lose his coat and then find it again?
An: Uncle Podger was himself sitting on the coat while everyone
was looking for it. He found it when he stood up.
d. Uncle Podger does not give much credit to his helpers. Give
two examples to show this?
An: Uncle Podger loses his coat and gets everybody to look for it
and then finds out that he himself was sitting on it. On another
occasion, he drops the nail and while everyone is looking for it,
he complains instead of admitting his mistake. These examples
show that he does not give much credit to his helpers.
e. Which statement tells us that the narrator does not think
much of Uncle Podger’s intelligence?
An: “The old fool was leaning over the chair at an angle of forty-

An Ideal Student
An ideal student is the one who takes interest in his
studies well. Besides, an ideal student also obeys also obeys all the
rules of the school. Not only this, he also obeys his parents and
teachers from the core of heart. He is always ready to help the poor
and the needy.
I have many students in my class but Ali is the one who is
my ideal student. He is tall and handsome. He is always neatly
dressed. He enjoys good health. He is intelligent and hardworking.
He is always good at studies. He also takes part in games and other
activities of school. He is my because of his good habits.
He is an ideal student in the sense that he always stands
first in the class and helps his fellows in studies. He has the
leadership qualities of head and heart. In short, he is a good speaker
and a role model for other students.
A Visit to Zoo
Last Friday, we visited the Lahore Zoo with our family. It
was a pleasant day. We made a plan and reached the zoo at 9‟0 clock
in the morning. We bought tickets and entered the Lahore Zoo. It is
situated on the Mall. It is a part of Jinnah Garden.
We saw there wild animals in the cages which were very
dangerous. We also saw some birds like parrots, sparrows and
pigeons. Peacocks were the centre of attraction for everyone. We
saw ducks, geese and other water birds moving freely in the ponds.
There were many grassy plots where we sat and took our lunch. My
father told us interesting things about different animals. We played
one or two hours and came back home happily in the evening. It was a
wonderful and memorable day of my life.
Stories:
The Farmer and His Sons
A farmer had three sons. They always quarreled with one
another. He advised them not quarrel but they would not listen to
him. This pained him very much. One day, he fell seriously ill. He sent
for his sons. When they came, he advised them to bring some sticks.
He tied these sticks into a bundle. He then asked them to break the
bundle. They tried one by one but failed. The farmer then untied the
bundle. He gave one stick to each of them to break. Each broke the
stick the easily. He then advises them that, if they were united like
the sticks, no one would harm them. They acted upon his advice and
lived peacefully.
Moral: Union is strength
Two Friends and a Bear
Once two friends set out on a journey. They promised to
help each other in time of danger. While passing through a jungle,
they saw bear running towards them. One of them climbed up a tree.
The other could not do so. He lay down on the ground and held his
breath. The bear came up to him and smelt him. Thinking him dead
the bear went away. The friend on the tree came down and said,”
What did the bear whisper in your ear?” The other replied,” He
advised me not to trust selfish friends.”
Moral: A friend in need is a friend indeed

score and won the match. It was an exciting game and we enjoyed a
