SIROM IS HERE TO HELP

George Town- A three days charity fair, “Water: Source of Life” conducted by Soroptimist
International Region of Malaysia (SIROM) will be held at Esplanade, Penang, from 3rd
February 2023.

The purpose of this event is to raise funds and recruiting volunteers for their upcoming
installing water tank and clean water project at Maran, Pahang.

Activities such as creative merchandise design, charity run, educational speeches, and organic
F&B booths are prepared. The public may visit their website to get more information.

1
3.0 Pre-event feature

Our organisation, Soroptimist International Region of Malaysia (SIROM), is going to

conduct a charity fair, “Source of Life”, from February 3rd to 5th, 2023 at Esplanade, George
Town. The fair includes a charity run, a creative design competition, organic food and
beverage stalls, game booths and so on. We found that society and public are focusing
heavily on the issue of polluted water sources but neglect the issue of the shortage of clean
water in rural areas. Therefore, we are here to publicise the event by raising awareness of the
shortage of access to clean water in rural areas.

SIROM has 15 clubs and already carried out various initiatives to serve the poor and
needy in the sectors of education, health, environment, economic and social development,
and skills training during the previous 25 years. Our organisation is currently ongoing the
project of “Clean Water to Rural Communities”, and will continue our journey by starting
another project related to the lack of clean water issue in early August 2023 to provide a
proper water system and water tank for the rural area at Maran, Pahang. This area is chosen
because we found that in the deeper area at Maran, Pahang has no regular supply of clean
water. The villagers only receive water once a week from the neighbouring areas. The
situation comes to the worst when the villagers are forced to rely on a homemade rainwater
collector to support their daily life.

Therefore, we hope these three days of charity fair are able to obtain funds to provide
a proper water system and water tank for the rural area in Maran. We plan to achieve two
major goals through this project. First, build a competent water system that can supply clean
and safe water for drinking and cooking, as well as a water tank to store water for use during
the dry season. We aim to ensure that all profits generated by this project are invested in the
project.

Globally, an estimated 2.2 billion people are unable to access clean drinking water
and 4.2 billion people lack access to proper sanitation facilities. Additionally, approximately
four out of ten people globally lack the necessary resources to practice proper hand hygiene
with soap and water in their own homes. In Malaysia, Long Tanyit is a secluded Penan
village that has around 300 people who have been marginalised and neglected, leaving them
without access to clean and safe drinking water for cooking and drinking. In the years before
hosting this project, we had raised funds for a similar project in the village of Long Tanyit in

2
Sarawak, but it was not very successful, so it is hoped that this fundraising project will go
smoothly and successfully to help the villagers of Maran get a clean water supply.
Furthermore, about 3000 people in the rural area of Maran, Pahang, rely on river water for
drinking, cooking and washing clothes. However, they are aware that the river is polluted by
agricultural runoff and liquid waste from the ground, but they have no choice but to keep
using it because there is not enough water. This issue has caused considerable disruption to
their daily lives, preventing them from leading normal and healthy lives. Without access to
safe drinking water and sanitation, individuals are exposed to a wide range of health risks and
diseases, so urgent attention and action are needed.

On the first day of this event, 3rd February 2023, we will have the speech from our
SIROM president, Ms Michelle. Mr Chow Kon Yeow, the Chief Minister of Penang, is also
invited to give a speech during the opening ceremony. Ms Michelle will briefly talk about
this charity fair, to raise public awareness about the importance of water. The fair will start
with a ribbon-cutting session, follow by a dance performance from Montana Dance
Academy. Our organisation has collaborated with some local businesses to set up the stalls
from 3rd to 5th February 2023 including the organic food stalls, handcraft stalls, mini
workshops, and so on.

Moreover, we will have a creative peripheral product design and colouring

competition on 4th February 2023. We have two categories for participation, which are
Category A for kids aged between 7 to 12 years old, and also Category B for teenagers aged
between 13 to 16 years old. Each category is limited to 50 participants. We do encourage the
public to register as soon as possible before the slots are full. The registration fee for the kids'
category is RM10 meanwhile the teenagers' category it is RM15. The kids' category will have
to colour based on a colouring stencil draft that has already been prepared for them. The
teenage participants will need to design a water tank with their own creativity within 1 hour
and 30 minutes. 3 professional designers are invited to be the judges of the competition. They
will choose 3 winners from each category and select the best design among the winners to
make peripheral products and sell them to the public in our next event. The winners will be
given medals and gifts. All the participants will get small appreciation gifts for their
participation. The total sales of peripheral products in the next event will be donated as funds
to provide proper water systems and water tanks for the rural areas.

3
To attract more public to put effort and support in the charity events, we decided to host a
charity run, “The World Walks for Water”, on the last day of the charity fair, 5th February
2023. The categories include 10km and 5km. Registration is open until 14th January 2023
with a fee of RM60 for early bird (before 1st January 2023) while the normal price is RM75.
The race pack collection date is on 29th January 2023. The run will start at 8 am but every
participant should arrive at 7 am for the registration process, warm-up session and greeting
from our president, Ms Michelle. There will have a Zumba warm-up session before the
charity run starts. Every participant will get a medal after they finish their run which is an
appreciation to them for joining the charity run. We believe, “Every step you take in the
charity run is a drop of water for Maran”.

Through this event, we, SIROM, hope to raise public awareness about the importance
of water and get their support for our upcoming project. As we mentioned earlier, there are a
lot of rural areas which do not have access to clean and safe drinking water. This will affect
the life and health of the local people. Therefore, our mission is to gather public support to
help the residents of the areas to develop a well water system, providing them with clean safe
water for drinking. Maran, Pahang is the one we are currently trying to help. We will not stop
our journey here but after this project, our organization will continue by lending a helping
hand to other rural areas or any places that need our help.

People nowadays don't know how to cherish water and don't know the preciousness of
water. We, SIROM, are here to do our best in educating the public by integrating education
and interesting activities such as providing interesting hands-on workshops about the water
system in our event for participants to experience. Our president always sticks to the idiom,
“if you don't know you don't care but if you start knowing something you start caring”, this is
the reason why we put so much effort into education. We hope the public, especially the
children will understand how and where water comes from and the importance of clean water
in daily life.

Here, we joyfully invite all the citizens in Penang or neighbouring states to come and
participate in this three-day event. 20-25% of profits from each of the stalls, and all the
profits from the designation of the water tank competition as well as the charity run will be
invested in the project. Warmly welcome people from all sectors of society to actively
participate in this charity event.

4
In order for this project toto go smoothly and help the Maran people by installing the
water tank and providing clean water to them, we are currently looking for more investors
and volunteers to join to support this project. Do click the link below to follow the
instructions if you want to become part of this big family!

Society should pay attention to these neglected urban areas and send help to poor
cities in the process of development. Last but not least, SIROM promises that we will carry
out more projects in the future to help the poor and needy in the fields of education, health,
environment, economic and social development and skills training. Our organization hopes
that from these projects, we can lead to a healthy and harmonious society.
