Telecommunication
Company Limited
Competitive advantages of PTCL
There is no meager competitor of PTCL in the landline
market right now but with the growth of
telecommunication industry in Pakistan, the
competition is increasing specifically in the mobile
phone sector. PTCL is the sole provider of Landline,
Smart-TV and EVO services however it is facing a very
low competition in its broadband market currently. Due
to its vast infrastructure, huge financial investment,
experience, knowledge, and support from the
government, PTCL is able to hold a very secure position
in the market. It has made impossible for the other
companies to give strong competition to it, as trying to
cope up the same time and investment which has been
made to grow such a giant organization is more or less
impossible now.

Direct competitors
PTCL is the sole provider in the Landline market
however some of the companies like Wateen, Qubee,
and World Call are trying to give the same landline
services to a limited market in Pakistan. No one is able
to compete with such a huge giant with the largest
infrastructure although these companies are operating
in the same market.
PTCL is also facing direct competition in the Broadband
market from the following companies:

 Warid
 Naya tel
 Wi-tribe
 Wateen

Indirect Competition
Indirect Competition faced by PTCL’s landline is mainly
from these 5 cellular companies:
 Ufone
 Zong
 Mobilink
 Telenor
 Warid
After the initiation of 4g and 3g services in Pakistan,
PTCL’s broadband and EVO are also facing an indirect
competition with the following companies:
 Zong 4G
 Ufone 3G
 Telenor 3G
 PTCL 4G

Landline
Wateen Telecom is a communication services provider
based in Lahore, Pakistan, and is a sister concern of
Warid Telecom Company. The company was
incorporated in 2005 and began its operations in 2007
with the deployment of the largest fiber optic network.
It’s the world’s first company to commercially roll out a
WiMAX network on a nationwide scale. Wateen was
recently ranked as the number one wireless broadband
service provider by the Pakistan Telecommunication
Authority (PTA) and won the Consumer Choice Award
for the "Best Internet Service Provider.(Wikipedia)
 Due to largest deployment of fiber network all over
Pakistan, Wateen’s quality of the network is more
reliable. It’s able to get in satisfied customers
unlike PTCL. However still Wateen has a very small
share in the landline market as PTCL is able to
remain on the top from the start.
 Wateen’s services have a very limited reach in
Pakistan. It serves a very few markets while PTCL
serves the whole of Pakistan. Although it impacts
PTCL in a negative way but the impact is negligible.
 Wateen and Qubee are planning to merge to form
Pakistan’s largest broadband provider in Pakistan
the merger once approved by the PTA will form the
second largest broadband service provider with
more than 200,000 subscribers and 22-24% market
share in Pakistan but with again PTCL being on top.
[ CITATION Haf14 \l 1033 ]. It will some how affect
PTCL’s share in the broadband market but again,
the effect will be very minimal.

EVO and Smart TV

Like Landline, PTCL is again the sole provider of
services like EVO and Smart TV in Pakistan. Up till
now, there are no direct competitors for these
services. PTCL is enjoying monopoly in giving these
unique services to its customers. Smart TV is itself
a very different service initiated by the company
that offers its customers a 1hour play back of
specific channels. It’s not far that PTCL might have
to face new entrants in its Smart TV and EVO
services which might lead to division of the share.
