The city embraces diversity and an international outlook, and yet is very Eastern at the same time. As | visit different countries and cities, | love sharing the beauty of the East and of Hong Kong, it was from here that | came up with the idea of creating my “WE- Festival”. In the beginning, | was always asked the question: what is WE? (have always been fascinated by music, art, religion and world cuisine, and am curious about how they originated, how they interpenetrate each other and evolve. They converge like a river, flowing from nowhere towards other unknown territories, Hence, | have been paying closerattention to the origins of classical music and the "totem culture". In my heart, Bach is the totem of classical music, while the totem of Eastern art is nature, Why do | think this way? This question gave me a strong urge to further explore the topic, and | hope to present the conversation to the audiences in Hang Kong: a dialogue between Bach rock and the indigenous music of Hanggai. Yunnan will always be as spellbinding to me as Hunan, my home. The music and dance traditions of ‘the Yunnan ethnic minorities are so primitive, yet so modern. Not long ago, renowned choreographer PRO Cm Cure ee ree ee Cra eens Run ears mesmerizing dances by the ponds in the Nushu Village in Jiangyong. On the other hand, with my feet, | surveyed the land of her hometown village in Yunnan, listening to their indigenous music. These experiences are all inspirations for the current creation and format of WE-Festival. "Opera and Dance Theatre” opens with adialogue between Yang and myself, in which we converse about “Opera” and “Dance Theatre", and share our "footprints" from our villages to the world. Shaman Luo Fengxue and Ournuyounuo, whom I first met while collecting folksongs in Yunnan, tell us stories about the Ancient Tea Horse Road; incorporating elements of Cantonese opera. Hong Kong-born soprano Candice Chung performs four roles in Western Style opera; two indigenous singers, the Mongolian Hasibagen and the Tibetan Yongjiangfan, make use of sounds from ancient times to interpret the musical story of Xuanzang's return to the East. It has a rich history and is made up of consummate musicians who have garnered both domestic and international acclaim, It is currently chaired and led by National Class One Performer Wang Zhi. The Orchestra has engaged the internationally renowned conductor and composer Tan Dun as its Honorary Artistic Director and Conductor for Life, conductor Xiao Ming as the Honorary Music Director for Life, and conductor Fan Dao as the Music Director. The Orchestra has been committed to the development of symphonic music and has many successful collaborations with artists from China and abroad. They include conductors Huang Feili, Zheng Xiaoying, Chen Xieyang, Tang Muhai and Yu Long and vocal artists like Dai Yugiang, Warren Mok, Wei Song and Lei Jia, and soloists Lang Lang, Lu Siging, Ning Feng, Qin Liwei and Chen Sa.
