Instructions:

Write a 750 word (approximately) literary analysis essay on one of the topics below:

1. Discuss how and why Tom Jackson’s “Elder” is a celebration of Indigenous knowledge.

2. Discuss the theme of political allyship in Beth Cuthand’s poem, “Were You There.”

3. Skyblue Mary Morin’s poem, “As You Lie Sleeping,” reveals the speaker’s awareness of
the impact of people on the Earth: discuss Morin’s central message to readers.

4. Tenille Campbell’s love poems, “Love Poem #98,” “Love Poem #58,” and “Love Poem
#7” are noted as celebrating “positive sexual narratives for indigenous women”: discuss.

5. Warren Cariou’s “An Athabasca Story” depicts a central character who is an embodiment
of something else: discuss what this something is and what Cariou’s central message is to
readers.

6. Create a topic of your own choosing, but it has to be an essay on one of the five works
listed above.
