No parents, No teachers, No rules……….No mercy. Lord of the Flies is a thought-


provoking novel authored by William Golding which describes the horrific exploits of a
band of young children stranded on an island and their transformation from civilized to
barbaric. A theme that can be seen throughout the novel revolves around the premise
that society and its governing bodies holds everyone together and without enforced
rules, based on natural rights, anarchy and savagery can result.

 After reading the novel and reflecting back on your chapter review questions,
you are to answer all of the following questions.
 Your responses should be typed, double-spaced in MLA format and this
instruction page should be attached to the front of you paper(s) as a cover sheet.
 The paper will be counted as a test grade and is due NO LATER than the end of
the day Tuesday, November 17, 2015.
 Answers receiving full credit will well developed and contain all of the following:

 A restatement of the question as a declarative sentence


 A clear answer with an identifiable position on the topic
 Evidence in the form of details from the story or the government text
book to support your thinking
 A clear explanation to the evidence offered

Ralph faced in his efforts to govern the island AND tell why you believe they were
significant. What do you believe to be the turning point in the novel AND why did this
event/scene/issue change the boys’ course? Use text, scenes, or quotes along with page

QUESTION 2: Much of what separated Jack and Ralph in their leadership styles were
their different personality and character traits. What type of leadership style did Ralph
display? What type of leadership style did Jack display? As 16 and 17 year olds, some
you will be eligible to vote for the next leader of the United States and ALL of you will be
impacted by the decisions that person will make as President. Identify FOUR different
personality traits you believe our governmental leaders should possess and tell me why
you believe those traits to be significant. Reflect back to the novel and for each trait
state if your believe Ralph and/or Jack held that specific leadership characteristic. (20
pts.)

QUESTION 3: William Golding, in an interview with Jack Biles, said that at the end of the
novel Ralph is weeping for Piggy when he should really be grieving about Simon. From
your reading of the novel, explain what Golding meant, and support or refute his
contention. (20 pts.)

QUESTION 4: William Golding once stated that the theme of Lord of the Flies is "an
attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature. The moral
is that the shape of society must depend on the ethical nature of the individual and not
on any political system however apparently logical or respectable. "Discuss William
Golding’s pessimism about human nature. Consider what he said about the defects of
society tracing back to the defects of human nature, how do we see this develop in the
novel? (20 pts)
