_____ Entry # 1: Mid-Year Reflection - Now that we are midway through the school year, take a few minutes to reflect upon your experience,
academically and socially. Acknowledge both your successes and your failures. In retrospect, what makes you proud? Do you have any
goals for the second half of the year? Would you have done anything differently? Are there any changes you want to make for the second
half of the year?
_____ Entry # 2: Civilized – The word “civilized” is repeatedly used in LOTF. What does it mean to be "civilized"?
_____ Entry # 3: Components of a Good Society – In The Odyssey, Homer conveys the qualities of a good society: leadership, assembly,
xenia (respect for other), kleos (achievement of greatness), respect for elders, and loyalty. During their first assembly, the boys in LOTF
vote to determine who will be leader of the group. They are clearly products of a democratic society and are trying to emulate what they
believe to be a well-run society. Do you think you live in a good society? Consider the elements listed above.
_____ Entry # 4: Perspectives on Me (You) – As you read LOTF, you will notice that you learn a great deal about the characters through the
words of other characters in the text. Have you ever wanted to know how others describe you? Write about the way in which you think
others see you. Why do you think they see you this way? Is their perspective accurate? -OR - Keep it simple and write about how you see
yourself and/or would like others to see you.
_____ Entry #5: Leadership – In LOTF Ralph and Jack are in a struggle for power. Consider good leadership in contemporary society. What are
the qualities of a good leader? Can you name anyone you consider to be a good leader on either the world platform or in your own
personal life (peer, teacher, administrator, community member)? Explain. You could also do the inverse and write about someone you
consider a poor leader. Explain.
_____ Entry #6: Allegory - LOTF is an allegorical text in which the characters represent abstract concepts apart from the literal meaning of the
story. Choose one or two characters to discuss that interest you the most. Conduct a brief character analysis and discuss why you are
most interested in this character.
Ralph – civilization and democracy
Piggy – rationalism and intellect
Jack – savagery and dictatorship
Simon – goodness and purity
_____ Entry #7: Human Nature – Are humans innately good or evil? –OR- Does civilization have a positive or negative effect on the
individual? Does it highlight, magnify, or regulate our inherent nature?
_____ Entry #8: What are you going to do? - You have probably already heard the saying “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” but
have you actually spent time thinking about what you would like to change? Take a minute to think about how you will make the world a
better place in either the near or distant future.
