Calibration of Torque Wrenches

1. Scope : To perform Calibration of Torque Producing Equipments (Torque

Wrenches)

2. Precautions/Warning: Personnel performing Calibration shall adhere to the

following safety instructions:
• All safety equipments, shield, guards etc., for the safety of the personnel shall
be used. Failure to comply shall result in the injury of the personnel.
• Ensure all bolts and other hardware used to connect Torque Calibrator,
Transducer, Adapters and other common hardware are securely fastened.
Failure to comply may result in personnel injury and/or equipment damage.
• When using Digital Calibrators, use extreme care when selecting Torque
Calibrator Transducer, and ensure Transducer has sufficient span to cover range
of DUC (Device Under Calibration)
• In order to prevent possible damage to the electronics or Transducers, ensure
Digital Indicator POWER switch is OFF when connecting or disconnecting
Trasnducer cable.

3. Setup:
• Surfaces of the Torque Calibrator shall be cleaned with soft cloth prior to
calibration as dirt and other residue may damage the surfaces and affect their
accuracy.
• The saurface shall be checked for parallelism in both horizontal and vertical axis
with the help of spirit level or similar device.
• Use a glass of water and place it on the table where the Torque Calibrator is
placed so as to check the level of vibration.

4. Calibration:
• Bring the DUC into the Calibration area and set to lowest setting and allow it to
stabilize to the ambient temperature of the Calibration area for 24 hours.
• The Temperature shall be 23 °C ± 5 °C and RH shall be in between 40 to 60 RH.
• Switch ON the Torque Calibrator and allow 30 minutes warm up.
• Ensure DUC is perpendicular to the Torque Calibrator to eliminate misalignment
or friction errors. DUC must be able to move freely.
• The accuracy of the DUC shall be not better than than that of the Calibrator.
The Torque Calibrator is having an accuracy of ± 1 %.
• The Calibration points shall be taken from approximately 20%, 60% and 100%
wherever possible. Hence 20% shall be the lower point, 60% the middle point
and 100% the higher point of the full scale.
• Total of five sets shall be taken and shall be noted down in the Observation
Sheet.
• After completion of each successfull set of Calibration, ensure the Torque
Calibrator is on zero after relesing the Torque so as to prepare for the next set.
• After five set of reading calculate the measurement uncertainty.
