Design of a Compression Member
Pd = Ae * fcd
1. Assume a suitable design compressive stress (fcd) as 0.4*fy to
0.6*fy.
– If slenderness ratio is less, consider high fcd.
– If slenderness ratio is high, consider low fcd.
– We don’t know slenderness ratio, but we know Le. If Le is high
choose low fcd.
2. Calculate effective sectional area, Ae = Pd / fcd.
– From SP:6, choose a suitable section. L, [, I section, etc.
3. Based on effective area calculate Moment of Inertia and rmin.
