Assignment # 2 Solution

Q1: The following measurements were made on inclined ground. Reduce the slope distances to the
horizontal distance giving the answer in feet. (a) (Your roll number/20 + 70) yds at 1 in 2.5 Let, assume
that I’m roll number 130.

Total distance = 𝑦𝑑𝑠

If slope is 1 in 2.5 then, 𝑑 𝑦𝑑𝑠

𝑦𝑑𝑠 𝑓𝑡

(b) (Your roll number/30 + 30) links at 1 in 5.75 (using 30 meter’s chain)
Total distance = 𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑘𝑠

If slope is 1 in 5.75 then, 𝑑 𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑘𝑠

𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑘𝑠 = 33.276 ft

(c) 1/28th of a mile at 1 in 10.25.

𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑎 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒 𝑓𝑡 67′
If slope is 1 in 10.25 then, 𝑑 𝑓𝑡

= 187.67’

Q2: A survey line was measured on sloping ground and recorded as (your roll number/20 + 200)ft. The
difference of elevation between the ends was 19.3ft.

The tape used was later found to be 100.5ft when compared with a standard of 100ft. Calculate the
corrected horizontal length of the line?

𝐷′ = + 200 = 206.5′

𝐷𝐿 = 𝐷′𝐿′ ⇒ 𝐷 = = 207.532′ ⇒ 𝐶𝑙 = +(207.532 − 206.5) = +1.032′

𝐶𝑠𝑙𝑜𝑝𝑒= - d2 / 2L = - (19.3)2 / 2x206.5 = - 0.902 ft

Page 1 of 4
Assignment # 2 Solution
C =+1.032 ‒ 0.902 = +0.13’
TL = D’+C= 206.5 + 0.13 = 206.63’

Q3: A 30-m band standardized at 20°C was found to be 30.003 m. At what temperature is the tape
exactly 30 m? Coefficient of expansion of steel = 0.000011/°C?

Using temperature correction equation;

Q4: A base line is found to be (your roll number/20 + 1048)ft long when measured in catenary using a
tape 200ft long which is standard without tension at 65 °F. The tape in cross-section is 1/8 ×1/20 in.

If one half of the line is measured at 65 °F and the other half at 85 °F with an applied tension of 50 lbf.

Find the total correction to be applied to the measured length?

Coefficient of linear expansion = 6.5 x 10-6 per deg F.

Weight of 1 in3 of steel = 0.28 lbf.

Young's modulus = 29 x 106 lbf/in2.

Q5: A 30-m steel tape measured 29.991 m when standardized fully supported under a 5.500-kg pull at a
temperature of 20°C.The tape weighed 1.22 kg and had a cross-sectional area of 0.016 cm2. What is the
corrected horizontal length of a recorded distance AB for the conditions given below?
Recorded distance Avg. temperature Tension (kg) Means of
AB (m) (°C) support
a 128.056 16 8.3 Ends only

b 1216.302 30 7.9 Throughout

Solution will be same as above except there would be no sag correction because here support is
throughout.

Q6: For the conditions given, determine the horizontal length of CD that must be laid out to achieve the
required true horizontal distance CD. Assume a 100-ft steel tape will be used, with cross-sectional area
0.0025 in2, weight 2.4 lb, and standardized at 68°F to be 100.008 ft between end marks when supported
throughout with a 12-lb pull.

Required horizontal Avg. temperature Means of Tension in

distance CD (ft) (°F) support (lbs)
a 97.54 68 Throughout 12
b 68.96 54 Throughout 20
c 68.78 91 Throughout 18

Part (b) and (c) will be solved in the same way having their own values.

Q7: A standard base was established by accurately measuring with a steel tape the distance between
fixed marks on a level bed. The mean distance recorded was 24.984m at a temperature of 18°C and an
applied tension of 155 N. The tape used had recently been standardized in catenary and was 30m in
length at 20°C and 100N tension. Calculate the true length between the fixed marks given: total weight
of the tape = 0.90 kg; coefficient of expansion of steel = 11×10-6 per °C; cross-sectional area = 2mm2; E =
210 kN/mm2.
