Motivation:

Frogtastics Game!
Using the game Frogtastics Game, five players will be pick among
the class. Every player has set of question that is needed to be
answer.

1. It is the extent or amount of space between two things, points, lines,

etc.
2. Locate the point in the cartesian plane (-3, 9), (-5, -6).
3. Locate the point in the cartesian plane (5, 7), (7, -6).
4. It is the known quantity which is used in measurement.
5. It is a two-dimension surface formed by two number lines. One
number line is horizontal and is called the x-axis. The other number
line is vertical number line and is called the y-axis.

Answers:
1. Distance
2&3

4. Unit
5. Cartesian Plane/ Coordinate Plane

B. Development Lesson Proper:

The Distance Formula itself is

actually derived from the Pythagorean
Theorem which is c2 = a2 + b2
where c2 is the longest side of a right
triangle (also known as the hypotenuse)
and a2 and b2 are the other shorter
sides (known as the legs of a right
triangle).

The Distance Formula is an equation

2
that can be used to find the distance between any pair of points on the
coordinate plane. The distance formula is
√ √
d= (x ¿ ¿ 2−x 1)2 +( y 2− y 1)2∨PQ= (x ¿ ¿ 2−x 1)2 +( y 2− y 1)2 ¿ ¿are points on a
coordinate plane.

d= √ (x ¿ ¿ 2−x 1)2 +( y 2− y 1)2 ¿

D = distance
(x1 , y1) = coordinates of the first point
(x2 , y2) = coordinates of the second point

Cartesian Plane: Identify the Parts of Me!

Given the Cartesian Plane, locate the parts of the cartesian plane.

Locate the following:

a. Quadrant I
b. Quadrant II
c. Quadrant III
d. Quadrant IV
e. (+, +)
f. (-, +)
g. (-, -)
h. (+, -)

Answer:

3
How to find the Distance between Two Points
The distance between two points of the xy-plane can be found using
the distance formula. An ordered pair (x, y) represents coordinate of
the point, where x-coordinate (or abscissa) is the distance of the point
from the x-axis and y-coordinate (or ordinate) is the distance of the
point from the y-axis.

Note: The distance formula ALWAYS produce a positive result because

the difference is squared.

Illustrative Example 1:

Determine the distance between A (1, 6) and B (5, -2)

Solution:

AB=√ (x ¿ ¿ 2−x 1 )2+( y 2− y 1 )2 ¿

x1 = 1 x2 = 5

y1 = 6 y2 = -2

AB=√ (x ¿ ¿ 2−x 1 )2+( y 2− y 1 )2 ¿

AB=√ (5−1)2 +(−2−6)2

AB=√ (4)2 +(−8)2

AB=√ 16+64

AB=√ 80

AB=4 √ 5∨8.944 units

The distance between A and B is 4 √ 5 units or approximately 8.944
units.

Illustrative Example 2:

A map showing the location of The Lawn Villa – Private Resort,

Santiago Integrated National High School, Santiago Elementary School,
and Minami Residence Gen. Trias Cavite in coordinate plane. Suppose

4
the coordinates of Minami Residence is (2, 2) and Santiago Integrated
National High School is (6, 8). What is the distance between those two
places?

Solution:

(x1, y1), (x2, y2)

Minami Residence (2, 2) Santiago INHS (6, 8)

d= √ (x ¿ ¿ 2−x 1)2 +( y 2− y 1)2 ¿

d= √ ¿ ¿
d= √ ¿ ¿

d= √ 16+ 36

d= √ 16+ 36

d= √ 52

d=2 √ 13∨7.211units
The distance between Minami Residence and Santiago Integrated
National High School is 2 √ 13 units or approximately 7.211 units.

Illustrative Example 3:

Every Friday, Vice Ganda meets Anne Curtis for a morning exercise.
The house of Vice Ganda has the coordinate of V (1, 3), in order to go
to the house of Anne Curtis, Vice needs to walk with the coordinates of
A (7, 11). What is the distance from Vice’s House to Anne’s House?

5
Solution:

VA =√ (x ¿ ¿ 2−x 1)2 +( y 2− y 1)2 ¿

V (1, 3) A (7, 11)

x1 = 1 x2 = 7

y1 = 3 y2 = 11

VA =√ (x ¿ ¿ 2−x 1)2 +( y 2− y 1)2 ¿

VA =√ ¿ ¿
VA =√ ¿ ¿

VA =√ 36 +64

VA =√ 100
VA =10units
The distance between Vice Ganda and Anne Curtis is 10 units.

C. Engagement The World of Pirates

From into four groups in order to find the lost treasure of the Pirates.
Read the and answer the following problems involving distance formula
within 10 minutes. Present the group work in the Manila Paper and
plot the distance between the coordinates.

Group 1:
Charles wants to go to Math Club while he’s in the School’s Library.
The Library is located at point (1, 5) and the Math Club is located at (4,
9). How far is it from Library to Math Club?

Group 2:
The location of Municipal Hall of Gen. Trias and The Church is located
at General Trias Plaza. From Municipal Hall the point of coordinates is
located at (5,11) while the location of the Church is (9, 5). How far is
the distance of the Municipal Hall from the Church?

Group 3:
Kathryn wants to go to a computer shop to print her assignment in
English. In their subdivision, there are two shops that are coordinates
G (4, 3) and H (-5, -2). Her classmates also neighborhood Nadine
suggested she should go to computer shop G because it is nearer to
their house which is at (-1, 2). Find the distance between Kathryn’s
house and computer shop G?

Group 4:
The group of Princess, Jestine and Patricia decided to make their

6
project after their school hours at Jestine’s place, since the distance
from the school from Princess is the farthest and Jestine’s house is the
closest. The school is located at (-3, 7) and Jestine’s house is located at
(3, 5). Find the distance between the School and Jestine’s house.
