4. Types of Lodging Facilities

Hotel - This can be a ten-room boarding house or a building with a thousand or more
rooms, conventions, meeting facilities, recreational facilities such as swimming
pools, tennis courts, and twenty-four hours room service.

Motel - Motels typically offer rooms only and free parking for guests. They are often
found along busy highways and cater primarily to transient cost-conscious travelers.

Resort Hotel - Resort hotels are intended for vacation travelers. They are usually
located near beaches. They offer more amenities, shops and recreation
opportunities.
Inn - It refers to small, typically rural that may or may not serve food.

Guest house/Tourist homes - these refer to private homes where the owners rent
individual bedrooms to visitors.

Lodge - Lodging establishment associated with outdoor activity such as a ski lodge
or hunting lodge.

Condominium - It refers to an apartment in high rise building, furnished housing unit


with kitchen, living room, sleeping area, and bath.

Boarding house - Residential facility that provides lodging and meals for guests.

Dormitory - Lodging facility affiliated with some educational and other institution that
provides sleeping accommodation.

Nursing home - It refers to a residential facility that provides lodging and food
service for people requiring nursing and related care.

Pension House - Pensions are found principally in Europe They are usually
family-owned accommodation facilities. In German – Speaking parts of Europe, it is
called Gasthaus.

Paradors - They are generally old castles, convents, or monasteries that have been
converted into hotels by the government and are operated by the government.

Condotel - Condominium hotels are a recent innovation. They are often hotels with
apartments (condominiums) instead of basic rooms.

Camp Grounds - Camping is a popular form of overnight accommodation in both


Europe and North America. This usually caters to travelers with utility vehicles. (UV)

Bed and Breakfast - Bed and breakfast is a form of lodging which originated in
Europe. This form of accommodation provides a bed for the night and breakfast the
next day.

Tourist Inns - Tourist inns are lodging establishments that cater to transients. They
do not normally meet the minimum requirements of an economy hotel.

Apartels/Apartment hotels - these are buildings that contain several independent


and furnished or semi-furnished apartments. They are leased to tourists or travelers
on a long-term basis and offer basic services to its tenant, similar to hotels.
Health spa - Health spas are hotels and resorts which cater to people who go to
spas for medical treatment or weight reduction.

Private Homes - The private home is the earliest form of overnight lodging for
travelers. It provides lodging to tourists who cannot be accommodated in hotels and
motels during peak vacation periods.

City Center Hotels - located within the heart of a city.

Sub-Urban Hotels - tend to be smaller properties that usually provide full-service,


and locate in suburban areas.

Airport Hotels - Especially to accommodate air travelers, near the airport.

Highway Hotels - They are designed for overnight stays for car travelers. The
rooms usually have direct access to an open parking lot. They are located on the
outskirts of towns and cities.

Casino hotels - Have gambling operations which are the major revenue centers.
They also provide live entertainment. A wide variety of luxury amenities and hotel
services including fine and casual dining and shopping centers are typically available
on-site.

Convention Hotels - Provides facilities and needs of groups attending conventions.

Full-Service Hotels - Offers a wide range of facilities, services, and amenities.

Economy/Budget Hotels - Offer clean, reasonably sized, and furnished rooms


without the frills of full-service hotels.

Extended Stay Hotels - An extended stay hotel offers long-term accommodation


for guests. With amenities such as self-serve laundry and in-suite kitchens, they're a
cost-effective and convenient alternative to renting a traditional apartment. Offer
extended stay, full kitchen facilities, and shopping services.
