As the revealed doctrine of Jesus Christ embraces
principally those things which we must believe and
practice in order to obtain eternal life, so also does the
authority of the Fathers extend to whatever we have
to believeand to practice in the work of our salvation.

Criticism in Pathology.
by which
the knowledge and application of those rules
we can distinguish the genuine and authentic from
the spurious and substituted works of an author.
Patrological criticism, therefore, has to set forth the
principleswhich enable us to discern with certainty
the genuine patristic works from the spurious, the
certain from the doubtful, the complete from the
curtailed and mutilated. This criticism is of para-
mount importance, owing to the existence of a great
number of spurious and interpolated works of the
Fathers.
2. According to authorship, a work is called gen-
uine* (opus genuinum), if it has really been com-
posed by the author whose name it bears spurious, or ;

the space of nine years. Yet all this time his soul was
deeply agitated, seeking for rest and finding it nowhere.
On the one hand the prevailing systems of philosophy
gave him no satisfaction, while on the other the Sacred
Scriptures and the Christian faith seemed tasteless and
repulsive to a soul swayed by sensuality and ambition.
At last he broke away from the sect of the Manichees,
but only to throw himself into the arms of the skeptics
of the Academy. In the year 383, he went to Rome
to teach grammar and rhetoric, as he had done before
at Tagaste and Carthage, and a year later to Milan,
whither his mother and some companions followed
him. Here from mere love of rhetoric he diligently
attended the sermons of St. Ambrose. These, together
with the entreaties of his mother, and the earnest con-
versation with his friends, at last opened his heart to
the power of divine truth and grace. He finally
renounced bis career as a teacher of rhetoric, and
retired, about 386, with his mother and some friends
to a lonely villa where in the full enjoyment of a most

tween 400 and 416), a speculative dogmatical vindi-
cation of the doctrine of the Trinity, based upon
Holy Scripture, Creation, and the nature of man.
(8.) " De civitate Dei," in twenty-two books
(written between 413 and 427). This is the most
finished work of the Saint, distinguished alike by
richness and variety of matter, vastness of conception,
and systematic manner of treatment. It consists of
two parts, an apologetical-polemical (books I-X),
and a dogmatical-philosophical (books XI-XXII). In
