1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Scope of use

The Regard system is designed to continuously monitor flammable, toxic and/or other
gases and control alarm, indicator or other equipment using alarm relays.

The Regard controller cards and rack are designed for use in a control room
environment. The atmosphere must be free of contaminants and pollutants harmful to
electronic equipment.
Regard controller cards are not designed or certified for use in areas where
flammable or explosive gas mixtures may be present.

1.2 Description
Channel cards are installed in a rack that has screw terminals for all connections to the
card. DC power is supplied to the cards either from a rack-mounted AC power module or
from an external DC power source through the appropriate terminals on the back of the
rack.

Each channel card has connections for the transmitter, alarm relays, analog output and
remote reset. The 4-character display shows the gas concentration at the measuring
head. The buttons on the front panel allow you to display the name of the gas, units of
measurement and measuring range.

Each channel card includes three alarm relays, which are typically configured to trigger
two gas concentration and fault alarms. If required, the fault relay can be configured to
activate a third gas alarm. The analog output provides a 4-20mA, 0-20mA, 1-5V or 0-5V
signal proportional to the reading on the display.

All adjustment, calibration and card testing operations are carried out only using the
front panel controls - no trimming potentiometers are provided. In addition to adjusting
zero, sensitivity, and alarm thresholds, the following settings can be made:

• Set alarm relay modes: self-locking or non-self-locking energized, with manual or

automatic reset, normally activated or activated by alarm, triggered by an increase or
decrease in gas concentration.

• Set fault alarm thresholds for out-of-gas concentration out of range.

• Test relay and analog output.

• Set gas name, range and unit.
• For cardsEx - set the head current without using an external device.

1.3 Channel card 4-20

Cards with 4-20 input are used with 2- or 3-wire 4-20mA gas transmitters or other
transmitters; the input of such a card can be supplied with a 4-20 mA signal from other
equipment. DC power is supplied to the transmitter directly from the channel card; the
nominal supply voltage is 24 V. The maximum supply current of the measuring head is
700 mA and is limited by a fuse.

Warning! Do not install 4-20 channel cards in rack positions connected to SE-Ex
heads: higher voltage at the head power terminals will permanently damage the
pellistors.
6 Channel cards REGARD4-20 and Ex. Installation and operation manual. Vol. 4. January 1996

1.4 Ex channel card

The Ex channel card is used with a transmitter type SE-Ex or other three-wire catalytic
sensor for explosive gases. The constant power supply current of the head can be set
within 100 mA - 350 mA. The maximum head supply voltage is 9 V on the card, which at a
current of 280 mA allows using a cable with a cross section of 2.5 mm2length up to 750
m. The minimum supply voltage on the head is 1.5 V.

1.5 Master card

The Regard master card implements system alarms for single channel and/or vote
system alarms and provides advanced configuration options. For more information seein
"Guide- Regard Master Card Instruction Manual".

1.6 Modbus Gateway Card

The Regard Modbus Gateway interface card implements the Modbus interface for
Regard systems. For more information see"Guide to ek- operation of the Regard
Modbus Gateway card".

2 COMMAND MODE
2.1 Introduction
All map parameters, including measuring range, zero point, sensitivity, alarm thresholds,
gas name and alarm processing mode, are configured using the corresponding
commands in command mode.

There are three levels of access in command mode, two of which are password protected:

• Reading level, where the configuration settings can be read but not changed, and basic
testing operations can be carried out (access to the level does not require a password).

• Level of service, which allows you to access commands that are used for regular
calibration and maintenance (you must enter a maintenance password).

• Configuration level, which allows you to access all the commands that are used to
configure the map (you must enter the configuration password).

2.2 Using command mode

To switch to command mode, press and hold the Reset button (marked with the symbol)
for five seconds.R). Click the buttonc, what- To change the display to "00-1", press Reset,
and enter the service level or configuration password. Without entering a password, only
a limited number of settings can be checked.

All commands are called as follows: buttonsc and d select but- measures the desired
command (for example, 10-0), then press Reset. The display will show the name of the
command (ZERO in our example) for about one second, and then its current settings.
After that, for most commands, use the buttonsc and d you can change the settings.
Press againReset returns to command number. “Fix” the settings by pressing Reset again,
and the command number will be displayed again.

Save the configuration settings with command 00-2. Exit command mode by selecting
command 00-0. The configuration settings are retained when the card's power is turned
off.

In commands of type 04-6, where the command name (in this example "FR") refers to a
fault alarm relay, the character "F" will change to "A3" if relay 3 is configured as a gas
alarm relay. In this example, "FR" will become "A3 R".

The service level password is set at the factory to "MMMM"; configuration level password
"CCCC".

2.3 Blocking alarms

When the card is placed in command mode, all alarms are blocked: the relays remain in
their current state, which do not change unless they are changed manually. Any relay that
was in alarm prior to entering command mode will remain in alarm. The Inhibit LED (LED)
lights up to indicate that the alarms are inhibited.

In command mode, you can manually change the state of the alarm relays using
commands 14-4 (relay A1), 14-5 (relay A2) and 14-6 (fault alarm/A3 relay).

Command mode displays command options and configuration settings.

Signal LEDs (LED)

LEDs A1, A2 and A3 indicate gas alarms.

• A flashing LED indicates that an alarm has been activated and the corresponding
signal The external relay is in the alarm state (assuming the relay is not blocked). The
alarm is acknowledged by pressing the Reset button.

• A solid LED indicates that the alarm has been acknowledged, but The readings on the
display are still above the alarm threshold. The status of the alarm relay depends on
its self-latching/handshaking settings (see section 3.2.2).

• An unlit LED indicates that the alarm has been cleared or is not present.

In command mode, these LEDs indicate whether the gas alarm condition would be in
normal mode: activated (LED on) or not activated (LED off). Recall that in command mode
all relays are blocked.

SD Fault
The Fault LED indicates a fault in the measuring circuit or head.
• Flashing LEDFault indicates that a fault alarm is active and the fault relay is in alarm
(assuming the relay is not disabled). The alarm is acknowledged by pressing Reset.

• Constantly lit LEDFault indicates that a fault alarm has been acknowledged, but the
condition that triggered the alarm still exists. The status of the fault alarm relay
depends on its self-latching/acknowledgement settings.

In command mode, the fault indication LEDs indicate whether the fault alarm condition
would be in normal mode: activated (LED on) or not activated (LED off).

SD Power
The Power LED is lit when the card has DC power and is operating normally.

The Power LED flashes in the event of an operational failure (see Appendix A).

SD Inhibit
The Inhibit LED lights up to indicate that the alarm relays are disabled. The alarm relays
are disabled when: the card is in command mode, a fault alarm is activated, the card has
detected a 1 Hz calibration signal from the Polytron measuring head, and within 30
seconds after power-on.

The Inhibit LED flashesturning onevery two seconds to indicate that one or more alarm
relays have been disabled. In command mode, when the Inhibit LED is normally lit, it will
flash,turning offevery two seconds.

R (Reset)
The Reset button is used to:

• Acknowledge alarms;

• Reset alarm relays;

• Enter command mode and select commands and configuration options, such as
walking in command mode.

Alarms can also be acknowledged and reset by short-circuiting the remote reset outputs.

• Click the buttonc to show the type of gas being measured;

• Click the buttond to show units of measure;
• Press the buttons at the same timec and d to show the measuring dia- groove.

3.2 Alarm relays

Three single-pole changeover signal relays (with potential-free contacts) are installed on
each channel card. Relays 1 and 2 are activated by gas alarms A1 and A2. Relay 3 is
normally a fault relay, but can be configured as a third relay activated by a gas alarm.

3.2.1 Normally on or alarm on

Each relay can be configured as normally on (fail safe) or on alarm using commands 04-4
(relay A1), 04-5 (relay A2) and 04-6 (fault/A3 relay).
Channel cards REGARD4-20 and Ex. Installation and operation manual. Vol. 4. January 1996 eleven

3.2.2 Self-locking and handshake modes

Each relay can be configured as:

• Self-locking and acknowledgeable.

The relay must be reset manually. The relay can be reset until the
cause of the alarm is removed.

• Self-locking and non-acknowledgeable.

The relay must be reset manually. The relay cannot be reset until the cause of
the alarm is removed.

• Non-self-locking and acknowledgeable.

The relay resets automatically after the cause of the alarm is removed, or can be
reset manually until the cause of the alarm is removed.

• Not self-locking and not acknowledgeable.

The relay will reset automatically after the cause of the alarm is removed. The relay
cannot be manually reset until the cause of the alarm has been corrected.

• Self-locking with delay and not acknowledgeable.

The relay must be reset manually, but if the alarm is acknowledged before the
cause of the alarm is removed, then the relay is reset automatically after the cause
of the alarm is removed.

Use commands 11-7 (relay A1), 11-8 (relay A2) and 11-9 (fault relay / A3) to configure relay
operation.

3.2.3 Alarm thresholds

Alarm thresholds can be set between 5% and 100% of the upper limit of the measuring
range.

Use command 11-1 to set the A1 alarm threshold and 11-2 to set the A2 alarm threshold.
Command 11-3 can be used to set the A3 alarm threshold if relay 3 is configured as a gas
alarm relay.

3.2.4 High or low concentration alarms

Each of the A1 and A2 alarms can be configured as high or low concentration alarm. (The
high concentration alarm is activated when the gas concentration increases; the low
concentration alarm is activated when the gas concentration decreases.)

Alarm A3 can be configured as high or low gas alarm, or as FLT (fault alarm). If you set A3
as FLT, the A3 alarm will be disabled and relay 3 will go into fault alarm mode.

Use commands 11-4 and 11-5 to set A1 and A2 as high or low gas alarms and 11-6 to set
A3 as high or low gas alarm or FLT.

3.2.5 Alarm hysteresis

Alarm Hysteresis1can be set from 0 to 5% of the upper limit of the measurement range in
0.5% increments; the default setting is 1%. For example, for a range of 0 - 500, a high
concentration alarm activated at 100 will reset at 95 (100 - 1% of 500).

Use command 11-0 to set the alarm hysteresis.

1 Gap between activation threshold and alarm reset. It is sometimes called the "dead zone".
12 Channel cards REGARD4-20 and Ex. Installation and operation manual. Vol. 4. January 1996

3.2.6 Blocking alarms

Alarms blocked:

• during30 seconds after applying DC power to the card

• when the card is in command mode
• when a fault alarm occurs
• when from the headPolytron received 1 Hz calibration signal.
When an alarm is disabled, all alarm relays are set to the "no alarm" state. Alarm LEDs
still indicate emerging alarm conditions.

3.2.7 Manual control of signal relays

In command mode, each alarm relay can be manually controlled to test or cancel a self-
latching/unacknowledged alarm. Use commands 14-4, 14-5 and 14-6 to control relay 1,
relay 2 and relay 3, respectively.

3.2.8 Blocking signal relays

Each alarm relay can be disabled to prevent its state from changing when an alarm
occurs. Blocking one relay does not affect the operation of others. The Inhibit LED flashes
every two seconds to indicate that the alarm relay is inhibited.

Use commands 60-4, 60-5 and 60-6 to disable the alarm relays.

Warning! A latched relay will not operate when a gas alarm occurs.

3.3 Fault alarms

Fault alarm activated

• anxiety due to an abnormal drop in concentration

• anxiety due to an abnormal increase in concentration

• power failure of the head on the cardEx

• when leaks are detected when testing headsCl2or HF/HCl

3.3.1 Fault alarms when measuring range is exceeded.

Fault alarms can be set for each channel when the measurement range is exceeded. This
allows a fault alarm to be activated if the signal from the transmitter falls below zero or
exceeds the upper range limit by a pre-set value. The value by which the signal must fall
below zero or exceed the upper limit of the measuring range can be set independently
for the abnormal rise and fall alarms. Both alarms can be set at the same time.

If a fault alarm is set for an abnormal increase in concentration, then the growth rate of
the signal from the measuring head is monitored. If the signal goes out of range faster
than can be expected based on the response time of the transmitter, then an abnormal
rise alarm will be triggered without activating the gas concentration alarm. Similarly, if an
abnormal drop in concentration alarm is set, decreasing the signal too quickly will trigger
an abnormal drop in concentration alarm without activating the low gas alarm.
Channel cards REGARD4-20 and Ex. Installation and operation manual. Vol. 4. January 1996 13

3.3.1.1 Abnormal concentration drop alarm

On maps 4-20, you can set the alarm threshold for an abnormal drop in concentration
within 0.5 - 3.5 mA or block the alarm.
On Ex cards, you can set the alarm threshold for an abnormal drop in concentration in
the range from -5% to -15% of the upper limit of the measuring range or block the alarm.

Command 10-7 allows you to set or disable the abnormal concentration drop alarm.

3.3.1.2 Abnormal concentration alarm

On maps 4-20, you can set the alarm threshold for an abnormal increase in concentration
within 20.5 mA - 23.5 mA or block the alarm.
On Ex cards, you can set the alarm threshold for abnormal concentration increase in the
range of 105% - 115% of the upper limit of the measuring range or block the alarm.

If the pellistor head is likely to be suddenly exposed to a high concentration of gas

(well above the LEL), so that the output signal from the measuring head rises very
quickly from zero to a value exceeding the upper limit of the measuring range, then
an abnormal rise fault alarm should not be set. concentration. A rapid increase in
the signal can activate an abnormal rise alarm without activating a gas
concentration alarm.

Command 10-8 allows you to set or disable the abnormal concentration increase alarm.

3.3.2 Pellistor head power failure (only for Ex cards)

A short circuit in the cable leading to the pellistor head usually triggers a gas alarm or a
fault alarm. However, if there is a short circuit between two current-carrying cores of the
cable leading to the head, or between all three cores, the signal change may not be
sufficient to activate a gas alarm or a fault alarm.

The power supply voltage applied to the head cable is measured at the power supply
terminals of the Ex card head. Typically, when the resistance of the measuring head
changes, this voltage does not change by more than a few hundred millivolts (recall that
the head is supplied with a fixed current), but an open connection will change this
voltage by 1 V or more. For example, if the supply voltage applied to the head cable is 5 V
on the card and 2 V on the measuring head, then shorting two current-carrying strands
somewhere between the system and the head will reduce the supply voltage by at least 2
V. Similarly, an open circuit will increase the supply voltage to the transmitter cable.

The head power failure alarm will be triggered if the head power supply voltage change
exceeds the alarm threshold. The change in supply voltage is measured relative to the
reference value - the power supply voltage of the head, fixed at the last zeroing of the
display by command 10-0 (ZERO). In the event of a power failure, the message “HFLT” will
flash on the display and a fault alarm will be activated.

Use command 10-9 to set the alarm threshold or disable the transmitter power failure
alarm. The head power failure alarm threshold can be set in the range of 0.5 – 2.0 V.

Warning! If the power supply voltage of the measuring head on the card is close to
the maximum value (9 V), then it is impossible to detect an open circuit in the
power supply of the head.

3.4 Analog output

The analog output can be selected as current mode or voltage mode. Use switch SW1 to
select current or voltage mode, and command 04-9 to select range.

Exit Position SW1 Command value 04–9

4-20mA down 4–20
0-20 mA down 0–20
1-5 V up 4–20
0-5V up 0–20

The analog output can drive a maximum load of 500Ω in current mode, or a minimum
load of 1kΩ in voltage mode. The maximum output signal at the analog output is 20mA
(or 5V in voltage mode).

The analog output is reset to 0 V.

3.4.1 Analog output trim

The front panel controls adjust the analog output corresponding to zero on the display to
4 mA (±0.02 mA), or 1 V ±0.05 mV for voltage mode. This allows any offset errors on the
analog output to be corrected.

3.4.2 Manual control of analog output

In command mode, the analog output signal can be controlled manually. The output
signal can be changed from 0 to 20 mA in 1 mA steps (or 0 to 5 V in 0.25 V steps in
voltage mode), or from zero to the upper range limit in steps equivalent to the display
resolution.

Command 14-2 allows you to control the output signal in display resolution increments,
and command 14-3 sets the output signal in milliamps.

3.4.3 Analog output operation during alarm blocking

In normal operation, the analogue output is given a signal proportional to the measured
gas concentration. During alarm blocking, the analog output can:

1. Continue to indicate the measured gas concentration,

2. Stay at the pre-alarm level, or

3. Vary between 3 mA and 5 mA at 1 Hz (Polytron calibration signal).

For option 2 only:

• teams14-2 and 14-3 you can manually change the output signal.

• During the initial alarm blocking period at power-up, the output signal is held at the
level corresponding to the absence of gas.

Command 60-9 allows you to set the behavior of the analog output during alarm
blocking.

3.5 Types of gas

Cards 4-20 Command 04-0 allows you to select the following predefined gas types:

CH4,H2S, CO, O2, Cl2, SO2, NO, NO2, NH3, O3, CO2, ClO2, HCN, HCl, HBr, HF, H2, Br2, H2O2,
EO, Ash3.PH3, B2H6, SiH4.

Command 52-0 allows you to enter an additional, user-defined type of gas.

Ex cards The gas type is set to 'Ex'. This setting can be changed by specifying a user-defined type
of gas using command 52-0 and selecting the USER option in command 04-1.

3.6 Units
The following predefined units can be selected:

%LEL, %UEG, %LIE, %vol, %v/v, ppm, ppb, °C, %RH.

Use command 04-1 to set the units. Command 52-0 allows you to enter an additional,
user-defined unit of measure.

3.7 Measuring ranges

The following measuring ranges can be selected:

0-1, 0-2, 0-3, 0-5, 0-10, 0-20, 0-25, 0-30, 0-50, 0-100, 0-200, 0-250, 0- 300, 0-500, 0-1000,
0-3000, 0-9999.

Use command 04-2 to define the range.

The display resolution changes depending on the selected range (see Appendix C). If
required, other ranges can be programmed by Dräger.

3.8 Custom gas type and unit of measurement

Command 52-0 allows you to enter a gas type or unit of measure other than the above.
Text is entered using commands 04-0 and 04-1, so you cannotsimultaneouslyset custom
type of gasAndcustom unit of measure.

3.9 Zero and span adjustment

3.9.1 Maps 4-20
Map 4-20 shows zero at 4 mA input and upper range value at 20 mA input. To
compensate for small errors in the output signal of the measuring head, the current
corresponding to the zero reading of the map display can be adjusted in the range of 4
mA ±1 mA, and the current corresponding to the upper limit of the measuring range, in
the range of 20 mA ±1 mA.

Use command 10-0 to set zero and command 10-1 to set upper range limit.

3.9.2 Ex cards
The Ex card will show zero with a zero signal at the output of the measuring bridge, and
the upper limit of the measuring range with a preset signal at the output of the
measuring bridge between 50 and 350 mV.
16 Channel cards REGARD4-20 and Ex. Installation and operation manual. Vol. 4. January 1996

Command 10-0 can be set to zero on the display, balancing the bridge sensor.

Command 10-1 allows you to set the calibration gas concentration on the display.

3.10 Zero drift deadband

To eliminate the effect of head drift on the display readings, a deadband can be set
around zero: the display will show zero as long as the transmitter output signal remains
within the band. This is useful for heads with high zero drift, where a constant indication
of measurement results is required.

Command 10-2 allows you to set the zero drift deadband between 0% and 5% of the
upper limit of the measurement range.

The Zero Drift Deadband setting does not affect travel. analog you-

3.11 Overrange self-locking

Overrange self-locking is used for measuring heads for explosive gases. Let us assume
that the concentration of combustible gas at the measuring head has exceeded the LEL,
thereby leading to a decrease in the signal at the output of the head. If the self-locking of
exceeding the measuring range is active, then such a decrease in the signal is not shown
on the map display - the display readings and the alarm status are fixed as if the signal at
the output of the head corresponds to the upper limit of the measuring range. By
pressing Reset, you will reset the self-locking of the display readings. Until the Reset
button is pressed, the analog output signal will also remain at 20 mA (or 5 V).

Use command 04-3 to set or disable the over range self-lock.

3.12 Supply voltage monitoring

Each channel card monitors the supply voltage at the DC input. A supply voltage below
18V or above 30V will cause a critical fault (see Appendix A). If the supply voltage exceeds
30 V, the normally energized relays will be switched off to prevent overheating of the
coils.

3.13 Remote reset

Each card has a remote reset input that allows short circuiting of outputs to acknowledge
or reset alarms on the card. Remote reset pins can be combined.

3.14 Turn off the display

The normal gas concentration display can be disabled using command 60-1. In normal
mode, the display will show “----”, but the card will respond to button pressesc, d andR.

3.15 Polytron head calibration signal

Regard cards recognize the 1Hz calibration signal from Dräger's Polytron heads. When
the card detects a calibration signal, it blocks all alarms and displays the message
"HCAL".
Channel cards REGARD4-20 and Ex. Installation and operation manual. Vol. 4. January 1996 17

3.16 Leak testing of Polytron Cl heads2

Relay2breaks the 4-20 mA measuring circuit for one 1 second. The card then checks the
4-20mA signal, which must reach a minimum value in order to pass the test.

Use:
• team10-9 to set the test mode on or off and set the level that the 4-20mA transmitter
signal must reach for the transmitter to pass the test. This threshold applies to both
automatic and manual testing.

• team14-7 to perform a manual check.

• team04-7 to program an automatic daily, weekly or monthly check.

3.16.1 Automatic check

Command 04-7 sets the interval at which test command 14-7 is automatically executed.
Alarms are blocked during the test and 30 seconds after it. The analog output will
operate according to the setting of command 60-9.

If the test is successful, the display will show the message “PASS” for 30 seconds, after
which the card will return to normal mode.

If the head fails the test, the message "FAIL" will be displayed. After 30 seconds, a fault
alarm will be triggered and the card will continue to operate normally. The message
“FAIL” will remain on the display until the fault alarm is acknowledged. Gas alarms and all
other map functions will remain operational.

2 To use the head test for Cl2, this additional relay must be installed by Dräger.
18 Channel cards REGARD4-20 and Ex. Installation and operation manual. Vol. 4. January 1996

4 INSTALLATION

4.1 Grounding
The ground terminal of the mains connector (E) on the rear panel is not electrically
connected to the metal of the rack. A ground strip must be installed from the rack to the
ground. The L, N and E pins on the rear panel connector must only be connected to a DIN
type mains connector.

4.2 Power supplies

The rack has two DC connectors and a network connector.

DC power can be connected to either DC connector or both, but these connectors should
not be used to “daisy-chain” power from one rack to the next.

An internal rack-mounted power supply module can be located on the left side of the
rack, occupying one or more channel card slots. Specifications for internal power supply
modules are given in Appendix B. Use the power consumption figures given in Appendix
C to determine power supply requirements.

If a 3-wire transmitter is used with the 4-20 card, the current drawn by the transmitter
must be added to the current drawn for that channel. The maximum current supplied by
the 4-20 card to the measuring head is 700 mA.

4.3 Cooling
Each channel card typically dissipates 3-4 watts of heat. Therefore, if a large number of
cards and racks are installed in an enclosed space, forced air cooling must be used to
prevent the cards from overheating. Use the power dissipation values below to
determine the required cooling.

channel map Power dissipation

4-20 typical 3W
maximum 7W
Ex typical 4W
maximum 11 W

The power dissipation is given for a supply voltage of 24 V. If the supply voltage is
increased or decreased, these values increase or decrease proportionally. The “typical”
value is for the card in normal mode with one relay energized and no alarms. The
“maximum” value refers to the card in the alarm state, when all LEDs are lit and all relays
are on.

4.4 Backup batteries

If an AC power source is connected to the rack, the DC input terminals can be used to
connect an emergency battery or backup DC power source.

The DC input terminals do not have blocking diodes to prevent current from flowing from
the rack-mounted power supply module to the battery or external DC power. Therefore,
the emergency power supply must have adequate backfeed protection. For more
information on emergency power supplies, see Dräger's manual."Working with an
emergency power source".
Channel cards REGARD4-20 and Ex. Installation and operation manual. Vol. 4. January 1996 19

If the emergency battery is to be charged from the internal power supply module, the
battery must always be connected to the DC terminals on the back of the power supply
module. This prevents excess current from flowing through the back panel PCB traces
when charging a fully discharged battery.

4.5 Connecting measuring heads

Wiring diagrams for measuring heads are given in Appendix E.

4.5.1 Cable types

Shielded cable (braided) provides maximum protection against high frequency
interference (RFI). Shielded (foil shielded) cable is cheaper, but not as effective against RF
interference, and should only be used in situations where there is little risk of such
interference.

A single-core armored PVC cable without a shield or braid does not provide adequate
protection against RF interference. Such cables may only be used for connection to
transmitters if it is known that RF interference is unlikely to occur during operation of the
installation, or if the cabling method provides sufficient protection against RF
interference.

4.5.2 Measuring circuit resistance and maximum cable length

The maximum allowable measuring loop resistance for Ex cards is 20 ohms (10 ohms per
core). Below is the maximum cable length with a cross section of 1.5 mm2and 2.5mm2for
pellistor headDräger SE-Ex, consume- current 280 mA.

Cable Maximum length

1.5mm2 450 m
2.5mm2 750 m

To determine the maximum cable length for the 4-20mA heads, see the heads manual.

4.5.3 Safety barriers and grounding

Since the 4-20mA signal from the head is measured across a resistor between rear panel
pin 11 and the 0V line, a two-way safety barrier is required. For card 4-20, the MTL787+
safety barrier is recommended. Single-channel barriers, type MTL728, lead to a short
circuit of the current measuring resistor.

Follow accepted grounding practices when connecting transmitters through safety

barriers. In the UK, the 0V line on the control system is normally only grounded through
a safety barrier. The diagram in Appendix E.5 shows the connection of the 0 VDC output
on the rear panel to the safety barrier ground bus, effectively grounding all channel
cards in the rack to the safety barrier ground. Alternatively, you can connect pin 12 (0V)
on each channel to the ground of the safety barrier.

4.6 Relay, remote reset and analog output connections

Terminals for relay, remote reset input and analog output are shown in Appendix E.1. To
minimize the effects of high frequency interference, use a shielded cable to connect to
the remote reset input.
20 Channel cards REGARD4-20 and Ex. Installation and operation manual. Vol. 4. January 1996

4.7 Fuses and reverse polarity protection

Each card has a fast-acting 1A fuse at the DC input. A diode on each card prevents
damage to the card if power is connected with the wrong polarity.

4.8 Installing and removing the card with power on

All Regard cards will work properly when installed in a rack with the power already on.
Likewise, removing the card while the power is on will not damage the card. However, do
not install or remove cards with mains voltage applied to any relay or inductive
loading connected.

5 SYSTEM SETUP AND CALIBRATION

5.1 4-20 mA cards

Turn on the system and allow the measuring head to stabilize before calibration for 24
hours. Some transmitters may take more than 24 hours to fully stabilize.

Put each card into command mode using the configuration level password. It is advisable
to lock each card in command mode with command 60-0 to prevent automatic return to
normal mode during system setup.

For guidance on calibration methods, see the Dräger Application Manual"Calibration".

Set up and calibrate each 4-20 card in the system as follows:

5.1.1 Setting the range, gas type and units

Use command 04-0 to select the name of the measured gas.

Use command 04-1 to select units of measurement.

Use command 04-2 to set the range.

5.1.2 Setting alarm thresholds

Always set alarm thresholdsafter range changebecause when the range is changed, the
alarm thresholds are automatically reset to the factory default settings.

Use command 11-1 to set the A1 alarm threshold.

Use command 11-2 to set the A2 alarm threshold.

Use commands 11-4 and 11-5 to set up high or low concentration alarm.

5.1.3 Zero adjustment

1. Select team 10-0.

2. In the absence of gas in the measuring head, the buttonsc and d zero for now- display.

3. If the display is still above zero, and when you pressd output "END-", then the signal
from the measuring head is too high and does not allow zeroing; if the display shows
a negative value, and when pressedd “END+” is displayed, the head output is too low.
If necessary, check the measuring head and recalibrate it.

4. With the display set to zero, press Reset.

5.1.4 Sensitivity setting

1. Select team 10-1. If the transmitter has a “calibrate” switch, make sure it is in the OFF
position.

2. Apply a known concentration of gas to the transmitter and wait for the display to
stabilize.
22 Channel cards REGARD4-20 and Ex. Installation and operation manual. Vol. 4. January 1996

3. Buttonsc and d adjust the display until it matches with calibration gas concentration.

4. If the display cannot be set to a value corresponding to the calibration gas

concentration, then it is likely that the transmitter is giving an incorrect output signal.
Check the measuring head and, if necessary, recalibrate it.

6. Once the display is correct, press Reset.

5.1.5 Trim the analog output signal

If necessary, trim the analog output using command 10-3.

5.1.6 Saving settings

Use command 00-2 to save configuration settings. Use command 00-0 to return the card
to normal mode.

The card is now calibrated and configured for normal operation. If necessary, other
configuration settings can be changed, such as normally energized alarm relays,
abnormal concentration alarm, or zero drift deadband, without affecting the main
settings or calibration.

Once the settings have been saved, removing the card or turning off the power will not
cause the settings to be lost.

5.2 Ex cards
The following sections describe the basic setup and calibration procedure for Ex cards
that must be completed for each Ex card installed in the system.

5.2.1 Setting the measuring head current

Immediately after turning on the system, use command 04-8 to adjust the transmitter
current. If the transmitter current is too low, the transmitter will not reach the correct
operating temperature; if too high, the pellistors can be damaged.

1. Select command 04-8. The display will show the transmitter current.

2. Press the buttonc to increase the current or d to decrease it. Sign A '+' after the value
indicates that the current is slightly above the value; the '-' sign means that the current is
slightly lower.

"MAX" on the display means that the maximum output voltage of the card is set;
"MIN" means that the minimum output voltage is set.

"END+" on the display indicates that the maximum value of the current regulation
range is set (about 350 mA); "END-" indicates the minimum current.

3. Click Reset.
Channel cards REGARD4-20 and Ex. Installation and operation manual. Vol. 4. January 1996 23

Allow the head to stabilize for at least one hour. Before carrying out the following
operations, check the current of the measuring head again: it may change slightly due to
heating3cards.

5.2.2 Setting the alarm range and thresholds

Use command 04-2 to set the range.

Use command 11-1 to set the A1 alarm threshold.

Use command 11-2 to set the A2 alarm threshold.

Use commands 11-4 and 11-5 to set up high or low concentration alarm.

Always adjust the alarm thresholds after changing the range, because when the range is
changed, the alarm thresholds are automatically reset to the factory default settings.

5.2.3 Zero adjustment

1. Select team 10-0. The display will show "NO".

2. In the absence of explosive gas on the measuring head, push buttonsc ord set the
display to "YES" and press Reset.

3. Wait until the bridge is balanced, then "OK" will be displayed.

A flashing "LOW" or "HIGH" message indicates that the transmitter zero error is too
high. Check head and/or connections.

A flashing "FAIL" message indicates that the signal from the head has changed during
the zero adjustment. Wait for the head to fully stabilize and repeat the zeroing
procedure again.

4. After the card is reset, the display will return to 10-0.

5.2.4 Sensitivity setting

1. Select team 10-1.

2. Apply a gas of known concentration to the transmitter and wait for the display to
stabilize.

3. Buttonsc and d adjust the display until it matches the calibration gas concentration.
Occasionally, the message “WAIT” may appear on the display while the card gain is
adjusted to maintain the optimal resolution.

The display message "END+" or "END-" indicates that the card has reached the
maximum or minimum gain: the output from the probe is either too low or too high.

4. When the display is correct, press Reset.

The display will show the calculated head output in volts, corresponding to the upper
limit of the measuring range. You can use this value to control how the head
sensitivity changes during subsequent calibrations.

3 Like changes in operating temperature, changes in ambient temperature within the specified operating
limits do not change the transmitter current.

APPENDIX A: OPERATIONAL TROUBLESHOOTING

An operational failure is a malfunction in the operation of the cards that is not related to
problems in the transmitter circuit. Operational faults are divided intocritical, which can
stop the system, andnot criticalwhen the system is still running but its functionality may
be limited.

The Power LED will flash once per second and the standard display will alternate with one
of the fault codes shown in the following table. Critical faults are also reported by turning
the fault relay on and off at a rate of 1 per second.

If relay 3 is configured as a gas alarm, it will not turn on and off to indicate a critical fault.
However, failure of the microcontroller (FLTM) will cause this relay to switch, regardless
of its configuration.

Operational faults are self-latching and cannot be acknowledged. After removing the
cause of the fault, press Reset to reset the fault indication. If the display does not reset
after pressing Reset, the fault has not yet been rectified.
