Class 10 English First Flight (Poem) PPT CH 9 Fog 1
LESSON – FOG(POEM)
POET: CARL SANDBURG
• FOG is a thick cloud that forms near the
ground.
• Synonyms: haze, mist
• Glossary:
Haunches: loin and leg of a quadruped
Harbour: place on the coast where ships are
tied and protected
• FOG is a short poem written by Carl Sandburg
an American poet. Here the poet speaks about
the arrival of fog into the city and harbour.
• The fog comes silently like a cat. Nobody
knows when a cat comes and goes. Similarly,
the fog’s arrival is very silent and disappears
silently.
• Just as a cat sitting quietly on its haunches and
watches, so does the fog. It quietly watches
over the harbour and city silently for hours
and then moves away.
THEME
• In this poem there is the theme of nature which
Sandburg explores through the medium of Fog
.The fog is a creeping living entity which descends
on the human world (harbour and city) without
any warning.
• The poem emphasises the need to cultivate a
quiet and reflective mind. It also gives a message
to those people make a pompous parade of the
little activities they do through the social media.
POETIC DEVICE
• The poetic device ‘Metaphor’ is strongly used
in this poem. It is a figure of speech that is
used to make a comparison between two
things that aren’t alike but have something in
common.
• Unlike a simile where two things are
compared directly using like or as, a
metaphor’s comparison is more direct, usually
made by stating something is something else.
