Newton's Second Law Lab Report

In the Lab I was Assigned Part II

GOAL: To investigate the relationship between net force, acceleration, and system
mass.

INTRODUCTION: A cart of mass m S on a level track is attached (by a horizontal string)

to a mass mH that hangs over the end of the track. When the cart is released, the
hanging weight accelerates the entire system (hanging mass + sliding cart mass). The
acceleration of the system will be measured with a digital encoder attached to the
cart/track.

METHODS:

Part 2:

In this part of the Lab, we measured the relationship between acceleration Msliding and
MHanging. We performed this experiment in a constant system with a sliding cart and
hanging mass connected by a string. We had an initial 30.1 kg weight on the cart. When
released, we measured the velocity of the cart as it slid across the frictionless plane,
eventually coming to a stop/collision. We transferred the weights from the cart to the
hanging mass for our next trials. We ran trials each time we removed a mass from the
cart until all the added mass on the cart had been transferred to the hanging mass.

Part 3:

In part 3, we kept the MHanging constant but added 0.100 kg to Msliding cart each
trial. The two masses are connected with each other by a string. The cart slid on a
frictionless plane and the trial stopped when the cart collided with the stopper. The first
trial consisted of the mass of the cart and 1 added mass of 0.100 kg. MHanging was kept
constant at .150 kg.v

What is the meaning of the y-intercept for each of your acceleration vs independent variable
graphs?

According to N2L the force and acceleration should be directly proportional and the y incerscept should
be 0.

How does this lead you to your expected value?

Since there is human error and discrepancy in our data this doesnt allow the y intercept to be 0

What do you think is the cause for the discrepancy between your expected slope and your
observed slope in your matching tables?

The cause for the discrepancy between my expected and observed because the expected was found with
a line of best fit and the observed was found using my data. There could have been errors within my data
from human error causing the discrepancy.

Conclusion of the Lab:

In this lab, I was able to observe and find relationships between the system mass of the
cart, acceleration, and forces through multiple trials and measurements. These
relationships were found using logger pro and analyzing the velocity and acceleration
graphs from our trials. I learned that the hanging mass of our experiment has direct
proportion with the acceleration and our system mass has an inverse proportion with
acceleration.
