1) before the main verb: We hardly ever go to the theatre Mike often watches TV in the evening I rarely eat fish They sometimes play tennis at the weekend
2) after the verb BE:
I’m never late for meetings Tom is often in a bad mood in the morning We are rarely invited to parties Patty isn’t usually angry
3) after auxiliary verbs (have/do/will/would) and modals (can/may/must/should etc.)
I have never been to Russia She doesn’t usually help at home They will occasionally visit us in the summer I can never understand phrasal verbs Parents tell their children that they should never speak to strangers
Longer adverbial phrases usually go at the beginning or end of sentences:
Every Saturday afternoon we go for a walk in the park I go to the cinema twice a month On Friday evenings she calls her aunt Helen I play tennis with my friends every second Tuesday
