3.4.1 Introduction
Total Passenger load and peak hourly traffic are the basic inputs for design of station. As per MSSR, the
design is to be done with a horizon of 45 years. This report provides this basic data. The estimation of
traffic has been done on the basis of
3.4.2 Surveys:
An entry/exit survey during peak hour was done from 18:00 to 19:00 hrs peak hour was selected based
on time table of trains (refer Annexure A). Secondary survey for Station area comprises of data
collection from offices. Train Schedule data and Ticket sales data was collected. This data was further
used in analysis. Passenger count from different entry/exit roads are given below (refer Annexure B for
survey locations).
16
Part-1 of KD2 REPORT For Redevelopment of Nanded Junction Railway Station
The population of Nanded city has been adopted from the Census for the year 2001 & 2011, which is
430733 & 550439 respectively, whereas for the year 2022 it has been taken from UN population
projection, which is 722000, rest of the has been projected based on the growth rate.
Following are the category wise tickets issued to and from Nanded railway station for the previous 6
years. This data is obtained from CRIS (Refer Annexure E). The Centre for Railway Information
Systems (CRIS) is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Railways. It develops and manages
the Information Technology applications of the Indian Railways. Different categories of tickets are AC,
Non-AC and UTS tickets.
17
Part-1 of KD2 REPORT For Redevelopment of Nanded Junction Railway Station
The passenger per day for year 2020-21 are 19543 and the peak passenger 10% will worked out to be
1954 pax per hr (as per MSSR), however this value seems to be lesser than the normal value as
compared to 2018-19 & 2019-20, hence for projection for future will consider the base values of
2018-19.
18
Part-1 of KD2 REPORT For Redevelopment of Nanded Junction Railway Station
The passenger per day for year 2020-21 are 19543 and the peak passenger 10% will worked out to be
1954 pax per hr (as per MSSR), however this value seems to be lesser than the normal value as
compared to 2018-19 & 2019-20, hence for projection for future will consider the base values of
2018-19.
The growth rate as per city figures is 27.79% per decade, and as per actual ticket sale data collected
figures reveals that the PRS passenger figures are increasing in the last 6 years with CAGR of + 9.3% and
UTS passenger figures are increasing in the last 3 years with CAGR of 1.92%, as well seasonal tickets are
increasing at a rate of 1.9%.
In view of the above, the lower bound of trends of growth of passenger is assumed 8% for PRS, 1.5%
for UTS and 1.5% for seasonal ticket up till 2031, further the growth rate are rationalized to achieve
linear growth with 7% PRS, 1.5% UTS and seasonal 1% till 2041 year, further the growth rate are
rationalized to achieve further linear growth with 5% PRS, 1% UTS and seasonal 0.5% till 2051 year.
Post 2051 the growth rate has been reduced further to 3% PRS, 0.5% UTS & 0.5% Seasonal till 2067, as
a result passengers’ growth at Nanded Junction Railway Station for next 45 years is as follows.
The Projected Daily Passengers for Nanded Junction Railway Station for 2067 is 1,89,653 per day.
The total passengers per day do not arrive/depart uniformly throughout the day. There are surge hours
in morning/ evening etc when the commuters are moving or when the popular trains are scheduled.
PHT is an important component which determines the actual facilities to be provided, and optimisation
of design can be done only if proper PHT is chosen. For PHT computations, two methods are adopted:
railway data and operational characteristics based.
19
Part-1 of KD2 REPORT For Redevelopment of Nanded Junction Railway Station
Actual Survey Results: At Nanded railway station, actual surveys have indicated a peak hour of
13881 pax.
CRIS data: According to ticketing data the PHT is 1954 for 2021 yr which clearly show the effect
of pandemic, hence considering the base value as 2018-19, the value for 2021-22 has been
extrapolated which works out to be 5089 passengers per hour for the year 2021-2022.
The calculation of passengers in busiest hour is done as per Current Time table:
The total number of passengers calculated as per busiest hour are 5100 pax
Between Nanded and Wanegaon halt the number of feeding tracks is two which requires 5 to 12
minutes travel time. Between Nanded and Maltekdi the number of feeding tracks is 2 which requires
15 minutes travel time. Hence with four feeding tracks the trains that can be accommodated is 4 to 6
minutes, trains with a reduced speed, which caters 10200 passengers per hour. Whereas PHT for the
year 2067 is 18,965 passengers per hour. Hence doubling of track is required- at 2040 year.
20
Part-1 of KD2 REPORT For Redevelopment of Nanded Junction Railway Station
Mela surge is another important consideration in design. Mela loads happen several times in a year
during the festival season or during recruitment/ exams or political/religious gathering etc. In order to
optimise the cost, the design shall aim to achieve a lower LOS during mela surge as compared with the
normal PHT. Even higher rush may occur very occasionally (not more than 5-7 times a year) and these
shall be handled by even lower LOS, or providing special/ temporary / semi-permanent / multi-use
arrangements. In order to work out the Mela surge, the passengers travelling in RAC and waitlisted
passenger travelling with their co passengers are also to be counted besides the rush in the general
class.
However according to MSSR the Mela load surge suggested is 35%, the same shall be considered for
design purpose.

take away, hot and cold food and beverage.
b. Provide on departure concourse
c. On the platform provide 6 catering stalls 5.5 square meters in size for through trains. End
platforms can have 5 stalls.
Passengers in various tiers for certain types of trips are entitled to linens, blankets and pillows. Space
will be required in station support areas for storage of both fresh and used supplies. Analysis of this
operation to determine space needs at the station and how to minimize the movement of these
supplies into the passenger areas shall be done. Study should include operational review of pick-up
and delivery, equipment requirements for efficient operation, supply and equipment storage and
staff support spaces.
iii.Luggage Storage

The station has 4 platforms, and has four FOBs. The other amenities like ATM, Food Court,
and Essential Stalls. Wifi facilities, retiring room, cloak room, and parking facilities are also
present.
The observed land use pattern at the surrounding areas of the proposed Junction Railway
Station within the radius of 500 meters is residential, Bus stand, commercial, Schools,
Hospital, Temples and Stadium. Most of the land adjacent to study area is residential land.
Study area is well connected by the road transport systems. The Main Road and National
Highway NH 61 and NH 161 pass through the study area apart from the other regional and
local roads with in the study area; the important roads with in the study area are as shown in

6.3.6 Junction
Eight important junctions were observed within the study area as shown in figure 18 and the
details as follows:
46
Part-1 of KD2 REPORT For Redevelopment of Nanded Junction Railway Station
6.3.7 Footpath
Most of the roads in the study area doesn’t comprise of footpaths. The footpaths present in
small stretches are also not being used by pedestrians due to discontinuity; the other major
factor for not utilizing the footpaths is the encroachments by hawkers, which is forcing the
pedestrians to walk on the carriage way. Almost all the road footpath and shoulders has
been encroached or vehicles parked forcing the pedestrian to walk on carriageway.
The significant number of pedestrians can be seen around the existing Junction Railway
Station, especially on Station Road, within station premises, especially at Front and Back
Road of Railway station. All locations as mentioned show that the pedestrians are forced to
walk on the carriageway because of following reasons:
• Encroachment of footpath is forcing the pedestrian to walk on the road.
• Absence of Pedestrian and NMT movement regulation
• Geometry of the existing infrastructure is not according to the standards, i.e
discontinuous pathways etc.
• Absence of facility for the physically challenged passengers.
• An undisciplined / scattered Pedestrians movement is observed on all roads and
Junctions.
• Unpaved surfaces.
6.3.9 Hawkers
47
Part-1 of KD2 REPORT For Redevelopment of Nanded Junction Railway Station
The Intermediate Public Transport System comprising of Auto-rickshaws are the backbone of
the present transport system of Nanded city. With all their limitations, they are keeping the
town movable and active. Due to the lack of public bus transport system within the city, a
major portion of the demand is being met by auto rickshaws, shared auto rickshaws, cycle
rickshaws and two wheelers.
Different types of parking are observed within station premises and around the vicinity of
Junction Railway Station, i.e., off street parking and on street parking. the Off- Street parking
is seen within the existing Railway premises compound accommodated daily around 336
Equivalent car spaces comprising of Two wheelers, Cars & Auto rickshaws, apart from this
unauthorized and haphazard On Street parking can be noticed on almost all roads of the
study area. Unauthorized parking can be noticed within the premises. Off-street Parking is
48
Part-1 of KD2 REPORT For Redevelopment of Nanded Junction Railway Station
unscientifically managed. The dedicated parking slot to a respective mode is not utilized. The
existing parking management adopts null intelligent system.
The station has Four platforms and two foot over bridge (FOB), which connects all the
platforms.
49
Part-1 of KD2 REPORT For Redevelopment of Nanded Junction Railway Station
• Hawkers have encroached the footpaths, thus forcing the pedestrians and commuters
to walk on the carriage way which is unsafe and might lead to accidents.
• Unfriendly footpaths.
• Autos Park and stop on the carriageway reducing the capacity of the roads and as well
as Junctions.
• The bus stand where other vehicles are also parked and the station road is the only road
leading to Bus stand.
6.5.1 Introduction
Total Passenger load and peak hourly traffic are the basic inputs for design of station.
As per MSSR, the design is to be done with a horizon of 45 years. Authorities has
conveyed that if the funds constraints are there, phasing with a time horizon of 20
years can be done. This report provides this basic data.
50
Part-1 of KD2 REPORT For Redevelopment of Nanded Junction Railway Station
6.5.2 Surveys:
An entry/exit survey during peak hour was done from 18:00 to 19:00 hrs peak hour was
selected based on time table of trains (refer Annexure A). Secondary survey for Station
area comprises of data collection from offices. Train Schedule data and Ticket sales data
was collected. This data was further used in analysis. Passenger count from different
entry/exit roads are given below (refer Annexure B for survey locations).
The population of Nanded city has been adopted from the Census for the year 2001 & 2011,
which is 430733 & 550439 respectively, whereas for the year 2022 it has been taken from
UN population projection, which is 722000, rest of the has been projected based on the
growth rate.
Following are the category wise tickets issued to and from Khajuraho railway station for the
previous 6 years. This data is obtained from CRIS (Refer Annexure E). The Centre for Railway
Information Systems (CRIS) is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Railways. It
51

develops and manages the Information Technology applications of the Indian Railways.
Different categories of tickets are AC, Non-AC and UTS tickets.
52
Part-1 of KD2 REPORT For Redevelopment of Nanded Junction Railway Station
The growth rate as per city figures is 27.79% per decade, and as per actual ticket sale data
collected figures reveals that the PRS passenger figures are increasing in the last 6 years with
CAGR of + 9.3% and UTS passenger figures are increasing in the last 3 years with CAGR of
1.92%, as well seasonal tickets are increasing at a rate of 1.9%.
In view of the above, the lower bound of trends of growth of passenger is assumed 8% for
PRS, 1.5% for UTS and 1.5% for seasonal ticket up till 2031, further the growth rate are
rationalized to achieve linear growth with 7% PRS, 1.5% UTS and seasonal 1% till 2041 year,
further the growth rate are rationalized to achieve further linear growth with 5% PRS, 1%
UTS and seasonal 0.5% till 2051 year. Post 2051 the growth rate has been reduced further to
3% PRS, 0.5% UTS & 0.5% Seasonal till 2067, as a result passengers’ growth at Nanded
Junction Railway Station for next 45 years is as follows:

Table 20 Total Passenger Table
The Projected Daily Passengers for Nanded Junction Railway Station for 2067 is 1,89,653 per
day.
The total passengers per day do not arrive/depart uniformly throughout the day. There are
surge hours in morning/ evening etc when the commuters are moving or when the popular
trains are scheduled. PHT is an important component which determines the actual facilities
to be provided, and optimisation of design can be done only if proper PHT is chosen. For PHT
computations, two methods are adopted: railway data and operational characteristics
based.
1.1 Actual Survey Results: At Nanded railway station, actual surveys have indicated a peak
hour of 13881 pax.
1.2 CRIS data: According to ticketing data the PHT is 1957 for 2021 yr which clearly show
the effect of pandemic, hence considering the base value as 2018-19, the value for 2021-22
has been extrapolated which works out to be 5089 passengers per hour for the year
2021-2022..
The calculation of passengers in busiest hour is done as per Current Time table:
Details of departing trains (Busiest Hour) as per time table in a week

Between Nanded and Wanegaon halt the number of feeding tracks is two which requires 5
to 12 minutes travel time. Between Nanded and Maltekdi the number of feeding tracks is 2
which requires 15 minutes travel time. Hence with four feeding tracks the trains that can be
accommodated is 4 to 6 minutes, trains with a reduced speed, which caters 10200
passengers per hour. Whereas PHT for the year 2067 is 18,965 passengers per hour. Hence
doubling of track is required- at 2040 year.
According to parking analysis the designated area for parking amounts to total of 336
Equivalent Car Space parking. It has been provided in existing scenario, as follows;

shown in Table 18 . Through the analysis it was found that the speed around the Junction
Railway Station varies from 8 km/hr. to 22 km /hr.
The circulation plan of Vehicular traffic has been shown in figure 22.
6.6 Conclusion
60
Part-1 of KD2 REPORT For Redevelopment of Nanded Junction Railway Station
The following conclusions are made based on our field reconnaissance and analysis:
o The Major problem is the connection to Bus stand, which only by Railway station road,
an alternate connection has to be setup to avoid the through traffic of busses on station
road.
o The Traffic in the region is heavy in the vicinity of the Junction Railway Station and likely
to increase after the redevelopment of Junction Railway Station is constructed as
commercial establishments are part of the proposal. Hence, the inclusion of commercial
establishment will increase the traffic generation marginally.
o Some of the junctions in the vicinity of the Junction Railway Station are under stress
already and need to be improved.
o Autos are parked right in front of railway station, which is reducing the capacity to
almost half.
o It has been observed that the buses are coming to pick up the devote of Gurudwara,
hence proper parking arrangements has to made for buses.
o A small bus stand is present right in front of the bus stand, hence the improvement of
the same is required with proper integration with railway station.
