Teacher Now, I’d like you to talk about something together for about two minutes. I’m going to describe a situation
to you. I’d like you to imagine that your school is holding a gotong-royong session and you need to
think what to bring with you to school.
First you have some time to look at the task. Allow candidates A and B 15 seconds to look at the task.
Now, talk together about the different things you would take for the gotong-royong and say
which one would be the most useful. You may start if you are ready.
o
Candidate A (What essential item to bring?) When we are going to a gotong-royong session in school, we could
bring a broom, a pail and a mop.
em
Candidate B (What other item could you bring?) Apart from that, we could bring some old newspapers and
rags. Do you agree that all these things should be brought to the school for a gotong-royong session?
Candidate A (Do you agree?) I agree. However, I feel the most important thing to bring to the gotong-royong is
the mop.
Candidate B (Do you agree?) I have to disagree with you on that. I feel the detergent is the most important
thing to bring.
Candidate A (Why do you say so?) Why do you say so? I still think that the mop is the most important as our
floor is dirty and sweeping them is not enough. The floors have to be mopped.
Candidate A (Why do you say so?) That is true. However, most schools do not provide detergent during a
gotong-royong and without them, our cleaning jobs will not be complete. Nothing will look clean
without them. Hence, it is the most important item to bring.

the world. However, there are several adjectives to describe people who don’t spend their money lavishly and
carelessly. They are stingy, thrifty, cheap and frugal. What are the differences between these four terms?
Stingy people refuse to part with their money, not even for charity. They are very7calculative and need
to split the cost of everything when you go for a meal with friends. On the other hand, a thrifty person can
be2generous. However, instead of purchasing or donating money, they repurpose things with their creativity.
For example, they will turn old clothes into floor mats or handmade quilts. A frugal person, on the other hand,
practises conscious spending. They don’t mind carrying out3extensive research to compare prices carefully
before making a purchase. They normally opt for the best quality at the lowest price. However, a cheap person is
n
only willing to buy things at the lowest price, without considering the quality. A cheap person likes to boast how
little they have spent and most of the time, they continue using their things until they are6irreparable.

Money is important, and there is no doubt about it. Most parents usually give their children a fixed amount of
pocket money on a1weekly or a monthly basis. However, for some teenagers, the amount of money given by their
parents is not enough. The chart above shows how pupils of Form 2 Beta earn extra pocket money.
The survey is meant for2twenty pupils of Form 2 Beta. However, four are absent on the day it is conducted.
According to the chart above,3three out of sixteen pupils of Form 2 Beta are doing part-time work to earn extra
pocket money. When I ask them the main reason why they have to work part-time, one of them says that his
parents couldn’t afford to give him a fixed amount of money on a weekly basis while the other4two say that
they’ve to support their parents.
Five pupils gain extra pocket money by selling recyclables like old newspapers, cardboard boxes and plastic
bottles.5Two of them are doing this chore only once in a month, and the other three are doing it almost every
weekend. Eight of Form 2 Beta pupils get their extra pocket money by helping in their parents’ businesses. Three
of them are helping their parents in their convenience stores, two are helping their parents in6small restaurants,
and another three are helping their parents selling breakfast meals by the roadside on weekends.

My Favourite Pastime
by Richard Leong Pek San
What I like to do in my free time is when I get new toys, I would do unboxing videos. These videos would
be25uploaded on YouTube. I also have a blog in which I write reviews about the toys I obtain. My brother and I
usually play with the new toys together. My26father is also a toy34fanatic, so I am fortunate to get new toys every
month. Before we take the toys out of the packaging, I would ask for my father’s help to27set up the camera.
Then, we would plan how the ‘unboxing’ would go. I need to speak loud and clear into the camera.
Soon, I became confident to upload my videos on YouTube. I also28want to meet new friends and get connected
through something we enjoy. I just give my honest opinion on the design of the toys, the fun factor and their cost.
I do have my favourites. I like to talk about toys that stem from big box office movies. The most recent one
is29Optimus Prime, of the Transformer franchise. I prefer the33classic Bumblebee look compared to the earlier
n
ones. I also like the way it30transforms without much difficulty. The previous toys were too complicated and
had too many folding steps.
io
My dream is to be a32toy YouTuber. I aim to hit 3,000 subscribers by year end. Currently, I have31200
subscribers. I like my subscribers’ comments that make me feel connected to them. Sometimes, they also ask
questions about other toys and give me recommendations of new things to try out.

Have you ever wondered; what if we can live without personal cars completely? Are you for the idea or
against the idea? Personally, I am for this idea and for a few good reasons.
First of all, the environment would definitely benefit from this change. 35 E Although we have electric

cars these days, they are not cheap to own and not available in all countries because the entire structure of the

I am thinking of buying some novels for my 12-year-old niece for her upcoming

you have any suggestions?

Andrew
io
In about 80 words, write a message to Andrew giving your recommendation.

Hi Andrew,
(Introduction) First of all, girls of her age are quite mature, so they would appreciate reading books that
would entice their interest. One title comes to mind is the Harry Potter series.
Ve
(Body) Harry Potter is a good series with a fantasy genre. It’s about a boy who discovered he was a
wizard and also the truth about his parents leading to more sinister plots and twists. Harry Potter is a
series of eight books, so it should keep your niece occupied.
(Closing/ Hope) I hope my recommendation helps to solve your problem. If you want to look for other titles,
