PART I. REVIEW: BREAK IT DOWN AND PLOT. Identify the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons and plot or draw
the atom showing the protons, neutrons, and electrons.

Protons: ____ Protons: ____ Protons: ____

Neutrons: ____ Neutrons: ____ Neutrons: ____
Electrons: ____ Electrons: ____ Electrons: ____

PART II. ENGAGEMENT: WHERE THE ELECTRONS CAN BE FOUND

The quantum mechanical model of the atom uses complex shapes of orbitals (sometimes called electron cloud), volumes of space
in which there is likely to be an electron. In each orbital there can be only two (2) electrons.
There are four types of orbitals: s, p, d, and f. They have different shape and orientation in space. The distribution of electrons in
the first 4 energy levels would be as follows:

ENERGY LEVEL MAXIMUM NUMBER OF ELECTRONS

I 2
II 8
III 18
IV 32

Look at the table on the left. Can you see why the
maximum number of electrons for energy level one is 2 and
for energy level 3 is 18?

Here are the shapes of the four types of orbitals: s, p, d, and f. The s orbital has 1 shape, p has 3, d has 5, and f has 7.

RULES FOR FILLING THE ORBITALS

Example: Neutral Oxygen
Aufbau’s Principle. Atomic
orbitals are filled from For oxygen to be neutral, it should have 8 electrons. Here are the
possible locations of the 8 electrons around the nucleus:
lowest to highest energy.
This means that the 1s 2s 2p 3s
innermost shell (lowest No. of electrons 2 2 4 0
energy level) is filled first. The table shows that out of the 8 electrons of the oxygen atom, 2
The image on the right are found in the first energy level, which is an s-orbital. The other 6 are
found in the second energy level: 2 are in the s-orbital, the other 4 are

can be written as:

PART III. APPLICATION: CONFIGURE THE ELECTRONS. For the following nuclides, write the number of electrons per
orbital and write their electronic configuration.
