Computer term generation is a shift in the technology used by a computer.

The
generation concept was used initially to differentiate between various hardware
technologies. Currently, development entails both hardware and software, which
together make up a whole computer system.

Five generations of computers are known to date. Each age, along with their time
span and features, was explored in depth. Approximate dates for each century.

First Generation
The period of first generation: 1946-1959. Vacuum tube based.
Second Generation
The period of second generation: 1959-1965. Transistor based.
Third Generation
The period of third generation: 1965-1971. Integrated Circuit based.
Fourth Generation
The period of fourth generation: 1971-1980. VLSI microprocessor based.
Fifth Generation
The period of fifth generation: 1980-onwards. ULSI microprocessor based.

A system is an electronic device that manipulates data or information. It has the

capacity to record, retrieve, and process information.
A device can now be used for printing notes, writing emails, playing games, and
surfing the Internet. Spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos may even be
edited or produced using it.

Nonetheless, the history of the machine dates back many decades and there are five
definable computer generations.

Each generation is marked by a major technological breakthrough that radically

changes the way computers function, leading to machines that are more portable,
less costly, yet more effective, efficient and resilient.
