Introduction

When testing and adjusting the transmission and power train, move the
machine to an area clear of obstructions, with safe exhaust ventilation
for the exhausts. Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil

under pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. To

prevent possible injury, do the procedure that follows before testing and
adjusting the transmission and power train.

Personal injury can result from spring force released when removing
cap screws.

Internal spring force will be released when cylinder assembly cap

screws are removed causing injury.

Always restrain cover as cap screws are loosened.

Follow the established procedure in the Service Manual to service these

parts.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during

performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool

Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

The following procedure is used in order to test the initial pressures of the transmission.

be removed without removing the entire valve. These bolts should be loosened. Remove
bolt (5) from the transmission control valve.

5. Slide tooling (D) under cover (4) . The U-shaped slots should be facing upward so that the
bolt holes line up with the holes in the plate.

1. Operate the engine at high idle in PARK or NEUTRAL. Record the pressures. Pressure tap
(L) is for clutch 8 and pressure tap (K) is for clutch 5. Remove the pressure gauges and
replace the caps (6) .

2. Remove caps (6) and install tooling (A) or (B) on pressure tap (G) , pressure tap (H) , and
pressure tap (M) .

3. Operate the engine at high idle in the FIRST SPEED FORWARD position. Record the
gauge pressures. Pressure tap (G) is for clutch 1. Pressure tap (H) is clutch 6 and pressure
tap (M) is clutch 7. Remove the pressure gauges and replace caps (6) .

4. Remove caps (6) and install tooling (A) or (B) on pressure tap (J) and pressure tap (F) .

5. Operate the engine at high idle in the SECOND SPEED FORWARD position. Record the
gauge pressures. Pressure tap (J) is for clutch 2 and pressure tap (F) is clutch 4. Remove the
pressure gauges and replace caps (6) .

6. Remove caps (6) and install tooling (A) or (B) on pressure tap (E) .

7. Operate the engine at high idle in the FIRST SPEED REVERSE position. Record the gauge
pressures. Pressure tap (E) is clutch 3. Remove the pressure gauges and replace caps (6) .

Adjustment Procedure
1. Refer to Table 2 for the correct pressures. If an adjustment is needed, follow Step 2 and Step
3.

(9) Adjustment screw

(10) Locknut

(11) Manifold

2. If the pressures do not agree with the pressures that are listed in Table 2, use the following
procedure to adjust the pressures.

a. Loosen locknut (10) on adjuster assembly (8) .

b. While you monitor the pressure, adjust the pressure by turning adjustment screw (9) .
To lower the pressure, turn the adjustment screw clockwise. One turn of the
adjustment screw will change the pressure approximately 132 kPa (19 psi).

c. Tighten locknut (10) . Refer to Specifications, "Selector and Pressure Control Valve"
for the correct torque. For all clutches except clutch (L) and clutch (K) , shift the
transmission to the PARK or NEUTRAL position for a minimum of 15 seconds.
Then, shift the transmission back to the gear that is specified in Step 7 through Step 1.
For clutch (L) and clutch (K) , shift the transmission to the FIRST SPEED
FORWARD for a minimum of 15 seconds. Then, shift the transmission back to
PARK or NEUTRAL. Make sure that the pressures agree with the pressures that are
listed in Table 2.

d. If the pressure cannot be adjusted to the acceptable limits with adjustment screw (9) ,
stop the engine and remove manifold (11) . This action will allow you to access the
selector spool. Remove the selector spool. Add shims and spacers or remove shims
and spacers, as required.

e. Install the manifold (11) . Adjust the initial pressure according to the procedure that is
listed in Steps 2.a through 2.c.

3. Continue the procedure until all the pressure taps are checked and adjusted.

4. Stop the engine. Remove tooling (D) .

5. Use new washers and install the transmission control valve on the transmission. Tighten
bolts (3) . Refer to Specifications, "Transmission Control Valve" for the correct torque.

6. To verify the clutch pressures, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Transmission Pressures -
Test and Adjust".

7. Install the guards and the differential drive shaft.

Note: This procedure should be followed whenever a transmission control valve is repaired.
Replace any of the springs or any of the spools that are contained within the individual
clutch stations.

Note: If the transmission clutch pressure is out of the tolerance range, the most likely cause
of the failure will be a failed modulation spring, debris in the control valve, or a seal failure
within the transmission.
