с. Опанец, Плевенско.10

(summary)
In the paper 104 adornments from North bulgaria have been described. missing is detailed in-
formation about the indspots of the objects. Indeed, more is known about the inds from the villages
of Dulbok dol, the troyan region and radjuvene, the lovech region. the adornments from the Early
Iron period which have entered the Nmh can be commented on in two aspects:First, the number of the
objects is indicative of how many antique treasures have been irreversibly lost for the science and of
the real danger the thracian tombs from the Early Iron period to vanish from the archaeological map
of bulgaria. the latter are particularly vulnerable because of their insigniicant height, easy localisation
and still easier and undisturbed uncovering by treasure-hunters. on the other hand the great number of
localized necropolises and of precious objects of artistry from the period, which have been uncovered
in the lovech-pleven region, raises the problem of the cultural and economical independence of the
region. probably in the late bronze period the central region of North bulgaria, situated between the

rivers of Vit and yantra, enjoyed a relatively independent cultural development. An additional argument
for this conclusion seems to be the concentration of metalware in the Early Iron period. certain repairs
of belt buckles and ibulae probably have been performed in local ateliers. those ateliers most likely
were situated close to certain raw material resources of which haemus was rich. having in mind the
similar economic situation in the late Iron age (5th-3rd c. bc), we might also look for such ateliers in
the economical and administrative centers in the plain. their production evidently was meant to meet
the needs of those centers. In each of the discussed cases the adornments show a great variety. All of
them were elements of the formal representative wear and illustrate the attention the thracians paid to
the embelishment of head, hands, waist and overclothes, a fashion to be developed and uniied further
in the later centuries of the 1st millennium bc.

one of the secondary of the balkan mountains road main line of communications, using in the
antiquity, is path crossly the massive of “ zheltets” top (2227 m. a.) and connectly the earths in the upper
stream of r. osem with the Karlovsko plain (hristov 2002, ).
senser of she begins from Kaleto top (1357 m. a.) where assembles multitude paths from the
valley of r. cherni osem and r. Vidima (ig. ). After “Kaleto” advances to the wide ridge eastern from
zelenikovskia cloister in direction of “polenitsi” area. here she narrows and in the rocky section of the
north-western slopes of “zheltets” top cross the ridg of the massive “ravnets” and the region of v. Vasil
levski (Karlovsko). the path is popularity with the name “Karlovski put”.
In many sections she has aspect of road, wide 3 meters with stone pavement and under builds in
the two side.
her tracing through the antiquity is inished with individual funeral hills, situated of height over
1300 m. a. and collective ind of hemidrahmi of parion, found in quarters in eastern foot of “Kaleto” top
(hristov 1994, 3).
the mentioned place “Kaleto” is situated of 6 km south-eastern from v. cherni osem (troyan
municipality) of the ridge of the watershed hill between the valleys of r. Vidima and r. cherni osem. It
examined in the time of expedition “central balkan – 2001”.

the place “Kaleto” (1357 m. a.) dominates above surrounding ground in the ridg. her length in
the axic east-westh is 25-meters. From her northen side begin to beats two little, artiical undermined
terraces, with sizes 10x3 m, situated of different levels. From east, north and westh the place is enclosed
with strong destroyed well, builded from big slab stones without solder. on the ground the well is in form
of spill. At
souding in the north-western, lowest terrace materials weren’t found.
the beat of south-westhern slopes of the hill, defended of 300 meters from the elevation of “Kaleto”,
but it was effective. It was assembed big quantity romen offensive weapone (hills of spears) iron umbo
from the beginning of III c. after hrista. the objects were getting out of depth from 0, 30 m.
Additionally reason for control of the indicated slopes of “Kaleto” is information by the inhabitants
of v. sherni osem about the discovery through the last decades of multitude spearheads.
the objects, which follow to descript are found of on ground in who depth wantings marks from
builds, architectural outits, potery fragments and at all marks from settled life. the spearheads ind
indiscriminately in more instances, sticked into the earth in a direct hit of area from over 2 m.
In the seem region were found 5 bronze romen colonial cins, wearing the fase of the emperors
septimii sever (193-211) and Karacala (211-217). the all are strong corrosioned. only, on the ……… of
one of them may to read the name of c. pautalia (in our days Kustendil).
In the available arms material the spearheads presents variety from forms and proportions, were
living standards simultaneons in one period with rather narrow chronological borders.
the spearheads are 14 (ig. 2-16). two of them belongs of pilum (ig. 9, 11); the other – of lancea.
the two kind spears have considerable differences. For the pilum is characteristic the short edge
with three or quadrangular section. the metal body (between edge and hilt) is long over 0, 60 m. Its shape
most often is a raund, sometimes square or triengular. It’s joining with stick and additionally ……… turn
the wooden hilt. the instance at presence of the bush near pilum arent rarе (bichop & coulston 1989, 54,
1). the determinly indication is the triengular shape of top.
the lance is with leaf-shaped top and bush for clamp turn the hilt. the correlation between them is
changing and ixing the chronological borders of the period of living standards.
the two inds, ig. 9 and 11 belong turn speciic kind the pilumes tops (scott 1980, 337, 7). In the
lower Danube frontier and its adjoning romen contrysides appear in III c. b. c. (petculescu 1996, 895, 1;
Vladescu 1983, 166, 104/2). the localize of this kind pilumes incline of the assumption, that it’s used
how from the cavalery, thet from mix military parts.
the other 12 are lances. their size is vareing from 0, 18 m to 0, 40 m. three of them are with
near marred longtudinal edge. the correlation between edge and bush (1:1) is characteristic for II and
beginning of III c. this indication observe near seven tops (ig. 2-8) determine them like kind I, var. 3
(hristova. 2001). the diameter of the bushes near six from the lances is varying from 0, 014 to 0, 02 m.
All they are light spears purpose for throwing.
p. couissin taking for determinly indication of categories heavy and light spears the diameter of the
bush (coussin 1926, 202-368). At the heavy spears he’s from 0, 03 to 0, 045 m.
three of the examination here spears belong on this category (ig. 12, 13, 14) and probably ig. 10 of
which bush is broken in the middle. they are purpose for heavy defected at barriers or other obstruction.
I. e. they’re playing the role of peculiar battering rams.
Foresee the purpose, the construction of them has the following specialities the edge of the hill
is short – 1:3 toward the high of the bush; the diameter of the handle varies from 0, 03 to 0, 05 m. the
unnatural high of the bush gives possibility the handle to turn gluey is short because can abstain bending,
meeting barrier. As at more spears, and here the clamp is recovered with rivets. Example at the spear ig.
15 is saved the all rivet, the thickness of which (0, 05m) enter rational in the sizes of the heavy lancea.
At the hill ig. 16 is saved only the edge. the bush be missing. this fact parry variouses attempts
the spear to be add which of category. the width of the edge as independent factor, isolate from complex
characterizition, would be misleaded.
In this inds group, special interest, as bearer of information, represent the hill ig. 14. he belong of
bolt, purpose for mechanical trowing. In the literature meets like catapultly (baatz 1994, 214, 13; bichop
83
Иван Христов, Виктория Христова
& coulston 1989, 54, 11). be hopful bulgarian and occidental originators, usefully this term, to impart
him only compendious character in the idea for mechanical throwing. Notorious is the big conscription
from variety of missile machines usefully during the antiquity. Among them is the catapult – heavy
siege machine, whose construction is adapted for throwing of stone or lead balls, thoroughly against
fortiication walls and other defences. on this principle, the ancient military tactic assimilate and other
mechanicals for throwing of ire, spears and bolts. the construction of every one from they, have your
specialitis, for eseeab weapons, which must take and to shot of known distance. Again through this causes
some from them are heavy, dificult quick (balista, oxibeles, scorpio), another so mobile (gastraphetes).
last quietly may to might be determinate like grandparent of a cross-bow (ig. 17a, b). this is a
mechanical weapon adjusted to keep in hand by use. mane in the constrution of him is bow trailing near
wooden body with farrow. In onece end inish with a catenary, which use for afix near the body by loadly.
come from there his denomination – gastro – stomach. which ire place by, so that the catenary lie on the
shoulder-opening. the one half of the wooden body, between bow and the catenary, is equipment with
metal theet. they are with opposite direction. on them join sliding mechanism, by with square section,
with which are and the arrowheads by him (ig. 17c). this fact it isn’t accidental. the shape of the bolt
follow this by farrow. thos the moving is unhindered. besides the square section on a farrow is quite
compatible with the thiner walls of wooden body by a gastrafet. For comparison the oxibel (ig. 18) is
with oval farrow, whose walls however are considerable thicker (warry 1995, 78). that allow to abstain
a risk which points of wear thin. Adduced descriotions put in service of my assertion, that the head ig. 14
is was belonging of gastrafet arrow. on not last a place is the fact that situated of inds don’t entry with
usage of heavy ighting machines. Among the inds from “Kaleto” igure and one umbo with spherical
shape. From the his periphery wantings separate fragments, but the four rivets, or more exact them little
heads, are reserved (ig. 19a, b). on the his back the umbo is was reserved plate, through which is was
afixing by shield. she passes over the all diameter and two opposites rivets.
the umbo is that element on shield, which most often reach to us. the rest metal parts usually
corrosion by unrecognizability and rarely allow corectly interpret (Писарова 1995, 23, 5; Тонева 1962,
60, 16). through frugally archeological material for shape and construction of the shields, us in roman
contrysides on the territory on today’s bulgaria, judge mainly from the written and iconography springs.
that’s why every additinally plainly rivet, iron plate or part of gauze make them sizable for the build of
the really construction of antique shield.
In order with arms elements, inclusive and iron point on spear (ig. 26); in the commenting a
common ind igure few with variety functions: two iron steels (ig. 23, 24), one bronze plate (ig. 22),
two axes (ig. 20, 21) and one polyfunctional object (ig. 25).
the description archeological situation incline reason of the think, that it concerns for battle
happened in the beginning of III c. A. D. hypothetical the battle would can to connect with irst massive
invasions of gotics in contryside misia superior ? (Иванов 1999, 110). Discovery of models from roman
