HEGELIAN HISTORICISM
INTRODUCTION

Philosophy in its universality, attempts to study a wide number of disciplines.
o In fact, tracing its development and its four major epochs—history of ancient
philosophy, history of medieval philosophy, history of modern philosophy and
history of contemporary philosophy—one definitely affirms that philosophy has a
historical bearing.
o To study history of philosophy is to philosophize itself.
o In the contemporary period Hegel gave history a central position in the study of
philosophy.
o To say the least, he revolutionized history in philosophy.
It is therefore within the competence of this chapter to affirm with Hegel
that “philosophy is not a timeless a priori reflection upon eternal forms but
the self-consciousness of a specific culture, the articulation, defense, and
criticism of its essential values and beliefs."
In defending this thesis, we shall first of all define what historicism is,
present how Hegel revolutionized history in philosophy by looking at the
currents and the thought systems he was against, and we shall then have a
deep penetration into Hegelian Historicism, as it is famously known.

We ended the above section by noting that Hegel made historicism the self-critical method
of philosophy because he believed that philosophy stood in the same need of historical
explanation as politics, religion, or literature.
o Now, this self-critical dimension of Hegel's historicism was his completion of Kant's
project for a critique of pure reason.
o Like Kant, Hegel believed that philosophy should become self-critical, aware of its
own methods, presuppositions, and limits.
But, unlike Kant, Hegel held that such self-critical reflection demands that
philosophy be aware of the genesis, context, and development of its own
doctrines.
