Past Continuous - Questions


REMEMBER! The past continuous of any verb is composed of two parts: the past tense
of the verb "to be" (was/were), and the base of the main verb +ing.

In the past continuous, the verb ‘to be’ functions as the auxiliary for questions.

Look at these examples:

Auxiliary Subject base + ing Complement?

Was she eating seafood yesterday?

Were they going to the cinema last


night?
Yes/No questions should be answered with short expressions.

Yes/no questions-short answers

Yes, I was.

No, I wasn’t.

Information Questions

Information questions require wh-words such as where, why, when, how, who, which.

Wh-word Auxiliary Subject Verb+ing

Why was she crying?

Where were they going?


*You can use time expressions such as last night, yesterday or a specific time in the past.

These are some examples:
