Autobiography Pack

The Planner
Provide each student with "The Autobiography Planner." These 8
pages will help students think through the important events from their
lives and generate specific language to describe themselves. Model
completing each page, one at a time, and then allow students time to
talk, draw, and write their own ideas.

Writing Templates
Choose from the 3 autobiography writing templates. Provide each
student with the template. Model using the Planner pages to think about
each paragraph before writing. The template can be used for drafting
before publishing, or can be the final version.

Rubric
I've included 2 fairly open-ended rubrics that allows
the teacher to assign point values or letter grades to
each category as appropriate for your focus of
study, expectations, grade-level, etc. If using a
rubric, introduce and review it before students
create their final draft.
I highly encourage self
and peer assessment, too!

teachertrap.com
Work Samples
Depending on grade-level, time, and
student ability, you can adjust your
expectations for the amount of
drawing and writing in each section.

For the "traits" page, remind students

that their goal is to think of a time they
showed that trait in their life already.
Often, my students want to come up
with ideas of ways they show
the trait. Remind them that our goal is
to plan our autobiography and include
real events from our lives.

Students used large sheets of

construction paper to create covers
for their work!

Making Booklets
If you are using the planner with older students or you'd just like to conserve paper, you
might try creating a half-page sized booklet rather than copying full-sized pages. There
are two ways to accomplish this and the end result is an 8 page booklet that only requires 2
sheets of paper!

Just fold in half and

use a long-arm
stapler to bind.

Print the pages into a booklet

using your PRINTER. (All printers are unique
so your print screen may look a little
different!)

First, select the pages that you'll need. In 5-12

this pack, the Planner Pages are 5 - 12.

Next, choose "Booklet" printing. The printer

will magically put the pages in the right
order so that after printing, all you have to
do is fold the stack in half and voila! You can
use that set to run your class set on the
copy machine.
If your printer does not have front-to-back printing, you will have to set the stack on
a copy machine and run it through to create the 2-sided set you'll need. If so, be sure to
place the pages on the top feeder tray in the "Landscape" position rather than "Portrait."

Create the booklets using your COPY MACHINE. First, print out the pages you'll
need FULL-SIZED. Place them on the top feeder tray of the copy machine. Now go hunting
for the "Booklet" feature. It's often hiding under a "More Options" selection. Enter the
number of FULL-SIZED pages (8). The copy machine will turn your pages into a booklet just
like the one above. Some machines will even staple down the middle for you!! You'll definitely
want to run a few test booklets before doing the whole class set to make sure everything is
coming out correctly.
