Q1: The main reason of the success of the NFL in the United States is that have easy
access to local roster of professional players and a big national fan base. On the first
factor, most of the athletes starts developing their abilities and improving their skills
since childhood, and they can also learn how to play better with its families, organized
sports clubs, etc. and when they come to high school or college teams, they can
upgrade their level of the game. On the other hand, the loyal fan base, according to
Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, is based on the rivalries of the towns against
town, which causes a more genuine emotional connection related to their home city and
exciting competition supported by sports events in high schools and college levels.
Q2: Unlike other sport major leagues like MBA, NBA or NHL that had some successful
going abroad in global markets, some of them with a really long history, the NFL couldn’t
integrate properly in foreign markets for multiple reasons, one of the most important of
the reason was the initial investment needed to implement the requirements of the game
in other countries, such as the equipment for contact sport, that needs to be more
complete than other sports like basketball; exorbitant salaries to incentive top talent in
particular teams, Football stadiums as the main way to play the games and can include
cost of modernizing and improving amenities. Besides this, the strategy to develop NFL
star players during the years, was a failure mainly because players feel like the games
in NFL Europa was more focused on young quarterbacks to play and using the NFL
Europa league as an testing samples with changing rules to see how this can influence
the dynamics of the game in the American league before. In few words, and considering
all this factors, the main reason of the failure of the ineffective attempt to become
international from part of the NFL was that the audience couldn’t see any good talented
player and a bad quality of the games that caused the decline of the audience decline.
Q3: The way a professional sport can create value on international markets are
improving the Value chain on the first step on the recruitment system, motivating people
to be interested in learning about the sport and integrating this in the youth generation
activities and giving to the public a good quality game as the ones offered in the United
States market.
Q4: The strategy the NFL should take is to focus its efforts and resources on core
markets where they can have more influence, and the cost of implementing the whole
system of the football games will be cheaper, a good example of this could be some
countries of Latin America where the US influence is strong and don’t have high cost,
and can be also a good strategy for having more sources of getting professional players
from abroad and expanding its brand into emerging markets that can offer good
opportunities of growing and being competitive with other sports leagues that don’t have
too much presence on this countries.
