EXERCISE 3
First calculate the dose based on the patient’s body weight: 72 x 4 = 288 mg
First calculate the dose based on the patient’s body weight: 65 x 1.5 = 97.5 mg
Every 8 hours = 24 = 3 times a day, so each dose = 97.5 = 32.5 mg

Exercise A1
5 3
a) 3 1
8 4 = (24/8 + 5/8) = 29/8 + 7/4 = 29/8 + 14/8 = 43/8 = 5 and 3/8
3 5
b) 15 8
4 6 = 63/4 - 53/6 = 189/12 - 106/12 = 83/12 = 6 and 11/12
1 1
c) 1 2
2 5 = 3/2 x 11/5 = 33/10 = 3 and 3/10
1 3
d) 2 3
2 4 = 5/2 divided by 15/4 = 5/2 x 4/15 = 20/30 = 2/3

Exercise A3
1) Express the following numbers in scientific notation:
a) 5326.6 = 5.3266 x 103
c) What is the volume of a space inside a computer chip measured to be 0.00000256m wide,
0.00000014m long and 0.000275m high (express in scientific notation, in m3)
Answer: 9.856×10-17 m3
Then multiply the digits together (ignoring the ×10s): 2.56 × 1.4 × 2.75 = 9.856
Last, multiply the ×10s: 10-6 × 10-7 × 10-4 = 10-17 (easier than it looks, just add -6, -4 and -7
together)
