BLACK HOLES

01 WHAT IS?
Black holes are extremely
dense objects that, according to
Einstein's theory of general
relativity, not even light can
escape them.

02 WHAT DO?
Black holes pull matter,
and even energy, toward
them, but not to a greater
extent than other stars or
cosmic objects of similar
mass.

03 HOW DO THEY GROW?

Most of the mass growth of
supermassive black holes
is thought to occur through
episodes of rapid gas
accretion, which are
observable as active
galactic nuclei or quasars.

04 ARE DANGEROUS?
Black holes "are no more
dangerous to human life than
jumping off a cliff", who has
pointed out that from a
cosmic perspective these are
agents of change responsible
for feeding the galactic
ecosystem.
