AutoCAD is a useful software for creating designs, particularly in 2D format. It
supports various commands and shortcut keys to execute multiple procedures and
draw objects efficiently.

The table below elaborates on the list of AutoCAD commands for this software. The
following commands can function if the user enters the specific keywords in the
command line on the interface or by pressing CTRL+9.

LIST OF BASIC AUTOCAD COMMANDS for Drawing

Command Full Form Description

Aligns an object with another object by specifying

AL Align source and destination points. Allows scaling of source
objects relative to the destination object.

Appends one object to the other by overlapping or

AP Append
combining them.

Creates an array of objects based on a desired

AR Array
profile.

Creates an arc by specifying the starting point/center

ARC/A Arc
and two endpoints.

Applies a hatch pattern with a color or gradient effect

BH / H Hatch
to a closed area in the drawing.

BR Break It breaks an object into two parts.

Saves a particular object as a block for future

BS Block Save
reference.

Inserts a circle by selecting a starting point and

C Circle
entering the radius.

Creates a chamfer, i.e., a symmetrical sloping surface

CHA Chamfer
between two non-parallel lines.

Duplicates a specific object at a different location as

CO Copy
per the need.

d

Measures the angle and distance between two points in a

DI Distance
drawing.

Appends one object to the other by overlapping or combining

DIV Divide
them.

DJL Dimjogline Adds or removes a jog line on a linear or aligned dimension.

EX Extend Extends or stretches an object to meet another object’s size.

Draws a simple line by defining the starting point and

L Line
endpoint. Can also define the line using an angle and radius.

LA Layer Manages layers inside the drawing through a dialogue box.

LO Layout Creates and modifies different drawing layout tabs.

ML Multiple Lines Draws multiple parallel lines.

MI Mirror Creates a mirror image of a particular object.

MT Text Creates a text object for writing a multi-line paragraph.

MV MView Creates and controls layout viewports.

O/OF Offset Creates a parallel copy of an object at a specific distance.

Edits a polyline, allowing closure, joining, width adjustment,

PE Polyline Edit vertex editing, fitting lines, or converting polylines into splines
or de-curve lines.

P Pan Adds a parameter with grips to a dynamic block definition.

LIST OF BASIC AUTOCAD COMMANDS for Drawing

Command Full Form Description

A polyline in the drawing, with each endpoint

PL Polyline Creates
connected to the start of the next line segment.

Constructs a polygon by specifying the number of

POL Polygon edges and the center. It can be inscribed or
circumscribed.

RA Ray Draws a semi-infinite line (ray) from a particular point.

Specifies the length and breadth of a rectangular

REC Rectangle polyline by defining a starting point and a point
diagonally opposite.

Rotates an object to a specific point by selecting the

RO Rotate
object and a base point for rotation.

Rotates an object in 3D space by selecting an axis and

ROt Rotate3D
angle.

SC Scale Resizes an object using a scale of measurement.

SL Slice Divides a 3D surface using a cutting plane.

SM Move Moves specific objects to a new desired location.

ST Stretch Stretches a particular object up to a specific point.

Inserts a table with a desired number of rows and

TB Table
columns into the drawing.

TR Trim Trims an object based on another object.

TRi Trim3D Trims a 3D surface based on another 2D or 3D object.

XL Extended Line Creates a line of a specific length.

LIST OF BASIC AUTOCAD COMMANDS for Editing

Command Full Form Description

Erases the selected object from the AutoCAD

E Erase
window.

F Fillet Creates a fillet/arc between two intersecting lines.

Edits a lightweight polyline by adding or removing

I Insert
vertex points.

Rotates an object to a specific point by selecting

LWE LwPolylineEdit
the object and a base point for rotation.

Creates a duplicate (mirrored) copy of a particular

MIRR Mirror3D
3D object.

PE PEdit Edits polylines and 3D Polygon meshes

Regenerates the drawing, considering existing

RE Regen
updates.

REN Rename Renames layers and blocks inside the drawing.

SPE Splinedit Edits a spline or splinefit polyline.

Creates a smooth curve that passes through or

SPL Spline
near specified points.

TS Tablestyle Creates, modifies, or specifies table styles

U Undo Undoes the previous commands.

Selects the measuring units of the drawing, such as

UN Units
units, inches, millimeters, etc.

UNI Union Unions two solid or two region objects

drawing.

Command Line
CLI Shows the command line in every drawing.
Interface

COL Color Opens a dialogue box to choose the desired color.

IMP Import It helps to insert a file of any format into the drawing.

QC QuickCalc Opens QuickCalc for smooth calculations.

QSAVE Quick Save Saves the ongoing drawing.

Enables the user to zoom in or out, increasing or

decreasing the screen size.
AUTOCAD SHORTCUTS
AutoCAD also supports the basic shortcut keys that are mainly useful in Microsoft
Applications. Following are some of the main shortcut keys that a user can apply
to ease the use of AutoCAD.

Shortcut Key Purpose

CTRL+E To shift between system displays.

CTRL+F To display snap points with the help of the cursor.

CTRL+G To enable or disable grid display.

CTRL+H To switch between different styles.

CRTL+SHIFT+H To show or hide color palettes.

CTRL+I To shift between the display of the coordinates in the status bar.

CTRL+SHIFT+I To apply geometric restrictions on the objects.

MANAGE SCREEN
Shortcut Key Purpose

Clean the screen by hiding the ribbon, palettes, and toolbar. This
CTRL+0 (zero)
is useful to increase the drawing area size.

To open the Property Palette that displays the properties of a

CTRL+1
particular object.

To open the Design Centre Palette. This palette allows the user to
CTRL+2
manage the drawings internally and externally.

Open the Tool Palette containing various tools, commands, and

CTRL+3
blocks.

To open the Sheet Set Palette for managing multiple sheets and
CTRL+4
layouts.
Shortcut Key Purpose

To open the DBConnect Manager that connects the user to external

CTRL+6
databases.

To open the Markup Set Manager Palette, which helps organize and
CTRL+7
analyze annotations.

To open QuickCalc for calculations and conversion of units of

CTRL+8
measurement.

To determine the position of the command line that helps the user to
CTRL+9
enter prompts or commands.
