✔ Background: Hudhud is a long tale
chanted during harvest or special occasions.
The tale of Hudhud Aliguyon is about the
heroism of two warriors who later become
friends.
Music of Mindoro
The name Mindoro came from the words
``mina de oro '' which means mine of gold was
given to Mindoro by the Spaniards because it is
the center for gold mining. Most of the Hanunuo Mangyans
are wanderers. They travel from different places where there is
food to eat. Mangyan is the general term for people who live in
the mountain region of Mindoro. The term Hanunuo means
“true “, or “genuine “. This word is used to describe the
Mangyans who have remained faithful to their traditions.
Mindoro Vocal Music
Ambahan is an indigenous poetry of the
Hanunoo Mangyan, it is inscribed using a system
of writing which is a descendant of the ancient
Sanskrit alphabet, the Surat Mangyan. It has no
specific tone style but it is monophonic in texture.
It is expressed in an allegorical manner. The
Mangyans write the lyrics of the Ambahan in a
bamboo tube called Luka as a means of
preservation. They take care of it, teach it and
pass it on to the next generation. They are taught
how to write the ambahan at a very young age even though they could hardly read
its script. Their songs include: Lullabies like the iyaya; Recollection of war exploits;
documentation; love lyrics; ritual chants like the ayung or ngayong.

The Ambahan basically has seven syllables in one line. The Ambahan ranges
from three to 134 lines. The poems represent a Mangyan’s personal thoughts,
feelings and desires. The Ambahan is a means to encourage the parents in guiding
their children, in expressing their love to them and in sharing valuable experiences
that can be applied to their day to day living. It is recited during social occasions,
in courting ceremonies, merrymaking, relaxing and worshipping. The vocal style
used is leader-chorus type.

Music of Palawan
One thousand years ago, Chinese traders named the island Pa Lao Yu,
or land of beautiful safe harbor because of its many safe places to land their ships.
This is where the relics of earliest settlers were found and have been unearthed
and dated 22,000 years ago while its human habitation evidently proved about
50,000 years old. Some of the tribes known to inhabit the islands such as Batak,
Palawan and the Tagbanuas – one of the oldest ethnic tribes in the Philippines
which may be descendants of the early settlers, who came via ice-age land bridges
and of later migrants who came on boats. They were followed in the 13th century
by the Indonesians of the Madjapahit Empire. During the arrival of the
Spanish, Palawan was ruled by Borneo from Jolo. The Spanish first took over the
northern part of the island and worked south from Cuyo and Taytay. The Spanish
invaded Palawan in the 18th century forcing the Sultan of Borneo to give up its
full autonomy. From Taytay, the capital was moved to Puerto Princesa. Nowadays,
Palawan is an island of mixed tribes, who have been pushed to the interior, and of
