Useful Activities &
Resources
Five Minute Activities
Remember to adapt these activities based on the age and abilities of the children and make
sure to keep them engaging and enjoyable!

Simon Says: Play a quick game of Simon Says, during which, you give simple
1 commands and the children follow along. For example, “Simon says touch your
nose” or “Simon says jump up and down.”

Alphabet Race: Call out a letter of the alphabet, and the children have to quickly
2 think of and say a word that starts with that letter. Keep going through the
alphabet as fast as possible.

Brain Teasers: Give the children a quick riddle or brain teaser to solve. You can
3 find age appropriate ones online or create your own. Encourage them to think
creatively and critically.

Charades: Choose a simple word or phrase, and have the children act it out
4 without speaking. The rest of the group can guess what they are trying to
convey.

Word Association: Start with a word, and have the children take turns saying
5 a word that is related to it. For example, if you start with ‘dog’ they might say
‘cat’ and then the next child could say ‘mouse’.

Stretching Exercises: Lead the children in a short stretching routine to get them
6 moving and increase their energy. Stretch their arms, legs, and necks, and
encourage them to take deep breaths.

Name That Tune: Play a short snippet of a popular song, and have the children
7 guess the name of the song or the artist. Use familiar tunes that they are likely
to recognize.

Quick Draw: Give each child a piece of paper and a pencil or crayon. Call out an
8 object or animal, and have them draw it as quickly as possible. You can set a
timer to make it more exciting.

visit twinkl.ie
Tongue Twisters: Challenge the children to say tongue twisters as quickly and
9 clearly as they can. Start with simple ones and gradually increase the difficulty.
It’s a fun way to improve their pronunciation and diction.

Story Starters: Provide the children with a sentence or phrase to start a story,
10 and have them continue it in a quick round-robin style. Each child adds a few
sentences, building on what the previous child said.

Draw It: Choose a simple word or phrase and have the children take turns
11 drawing it on a whiteboard or piece of paper while the others try to guess what
it is.

Musical Statues: Play some upbeat music and have the children dance. When
12 the music stops suddenly, they have to freeze in whatever position they are in.
Restart the music and repeat the process.

Kim’s Memory Game: Place several small objects on a tray, and show it to the
13 children for a few seconds. Then cover the tray and have them write down or
remember as many objects as they can.

Name Chain: Stand in a circle and start by saying your name. The next child
14 has to say your name and then add their own name. Continue around the circle,
with each child repeating all the previous names and adding their own.

I Spy: Choose an object in the room and say, "I spy with my little eye something
15 that is..." and provide a clue, such as a colour or shape. The children take turns
guessing the object.

Quick Math Challenge: Call out simple maths problems, such as addition or
16 subtraction equations, and have the children solve them as quickly as possible.
Increase the difficulty as they get more comfortable.

Animal Sounds: Choose an animal and have the children take turns making the
17 sound that animal makes. They can also mimic the animal’s movements for
added fun.

visit twinkl.ie
Building Challenge: Provide a set of building blocks or modelling dough. Give
18 the children a specific challenge, such as building the tallest tower or creating
an animal sculpture in five minutes.

Body Letters: Call out a letter of the alphabet, and the children have to form
19 that letter with their bodies. Encourage them to be creative and try different
poses or positions to make the shape of the letter.

Two Truths and a Lie: Each pupil takes turns sharing two true statements and
20 one false statement about themselves. The rest of the class then have to guess
which statement is untrue.
