In fact, honesty is the best policy. However, in some circumstances, not
revealing the truth is considered better for the listeners.

2. Outline
a. Protect people’s feelings from getting hurt
- Conceal bad news
- Avoid negative reaction from others, including punishment

Eg. Many patients being diagnosed with cancers receive encouragement


from doctors which say that they will be certainly recovered from their
illness. In those circumstances, the falsehood can be used as a placebo to
give the patient a peaceful frame of mind, thereby participating in
treatment activities

b. White lies are harmless and can be socially beneficial


- Tell white lies in order to be polite and diplomatic
- Because they care about our social survival and social happiness

Eg. You say, "Your fruitcake was delicious!," even though you threw it in
the trash after one disgusting bite.

c. Be stronger
- Try to save face or look good
- Make things better instead of disappointing people

Eg. A teenager had a bad mark. She tried to be okay and studied harder
in order not to make her parents worried.
