WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

This module is designed to help you visualize

and solve one-step routine and non-routine problems
involving addition of whole numbers including money using
appropriate problem solving strategies. We are facing
different problems in our daily lives. In every problem we
faced, we does not solve it instantly but we think and make
plans before we act. Same as in solving Mathematical
problems, there are some steps to follow before we come
up with a solution for a certain problems.

Through the activities prepared in this module, you will

be able to enhance / master your mathematical skill in
solving word problems following the step by step process
on how to solve it.

May you enjoy the activities as learn from it.

HOW TO USE THIS MODULE

This module contains several lessons. To make the most out
of them, you need to do the following:

1. Scan the list of Learning Objectives to get an idea of the

knowledge and skills you are expected to gain and
develop as you study the module. These outcomes are
based on the content standards, performance standards,
and learning competencies of the K to 12 Curriculum
Mathematics 1.

2. Take the What I Know. Your score will determine your

knowledge of the lessons in the module. If you get 100% of

2
the items correctly, you may proceed to the next module.
Otherwise, you must go through the lessons.

3. Each Lesson aims to develop one of the learning

objectives set for the module. It starts with an activity that
will help you understand the lesson and meet the required
competencies.

4. Take your time in reading this module. Write down points

for clarification. You may discuss these points with your
teacher.

5. Perform all activities and answer all worksheets. The

activities and assessments are designed to enhance your
understanding on how to visualize and solve one-step
routine and non-routine problems involving addition of
whole numbers including money with sums up to 99 using
appropriate problem solving strategies. The activities will
also give you an idea how well you understand the lessons.
Review the lessons if necessary, until you have achieved a
satisfactory level of understanding.

6. At the end of the module, take the Post-Assessment to

evaluate your overall understanding about the lessons.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the module, you should be able to:

• visualize and solve one-step routine and non-
routine problems involving addition of whole
numbers including money with sums up to 99
using appropriate problem solving strategies.

3
WHAT I KNOW

Let us determine what you already know. Read the

problem then answer the questions that follow. Circle the
letter of your answer.

worth ₱ 50.00 too. Which of the following amount will he
needs so he can buy these toys?

a. b. c.

5
WHAT’S IN

Before we move on with our new lesson, let us

review the previous topic by answering the following
activity.

a.

b.

c.

d. e. f.

6
WHAT’S NEW

From the previous activity, you were able to learn

addition. Now, study the situation / picture below.

Word Problem No. 1

Tim has a pet. His pet is a hen. One day, the hen
started to lay eggs. On the 1st day, the hen laid 4 eggs while
the hen laid 3 eggs on the second day. What is the total
number of eggs that the hen laid in 2 days?

1st Day 2nd Day

How many eggs did the hen laid on the 1st day?

How many eggs did the hen laid on the 2nd day?

What is the total number of eggs that the hen laid in 2

days?

7
WHAT IS IT

Lesson 1. Routine Problems

From the word problem no. 1 that was presented, let
us analyze and solve the problem following the steps
below.
1. First, find out what is being asked. From the problem, the
question says “What is the total number of eggs that the
hen laid in 2 days?”
= The problem asks for the total number of eggs that
the hen laid in 2 days.

2. Second, identify what facts are given.

= it was mentioned that the hen laid 4 eggs (1st day)
and 3 eggs (2nd day).

3. Third, look for the word clue/s in the problem.

= from the question, the word total is our word clue.
The word itself tells us how to solve the problem. Other
clue words for addition are “in all”, “spend” etc.

4. Fourth, from the word clue/s, you can now determine

what operation to use.
= the word clue “total” means combine or add so
the operation that we will use is addition.

5. Next is to write the number sentence using the operation.

The number sentence comes from the given facts and
the operation to be used, so it will be written this way;
4+3=n

8
6. Lastly is to solve and label the answer. So we will write it
this way; 4 + 3 = 7, so there are 7 total number of eggs
that the hen laid in 2 days.

In solving a word problem, the following steps /guide

questions may help you find a solution for that problem.

STEPS IN SOLVING A PROBLEM

1. What is asked in the problem?
Know 2. What are the given facts?
3. What are the word clues?
Decide 4. What operation do the word clues
suggest?
Solve 5. What is the number sentence?

Answer 6. What is the complete answer?

Lesson 2. Non-routine Problems

Word Problem 2
A horse has four legs.
Try to answer the questions in the second column.
How many feet do 2 horses have?

9
How many feet do 3 horses have?

How many feet do 4 horses have?

From word problem 2, we can answer the questions

by just multiplying the number of horses to the number of
feet that a horse has. But there are other ways to do it. We
can find the answers through repetitive addition.

Since a has 4 feet, let us count their feet.

10
In solving mathematical problems, there are different
ways and strategies on how to solve it. We can create our
own solution in order to solve the problem.

WHAT’S MORE
